Fire Lash Proficiency (quick) [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-30-07, 11:37 AM I'm sure this has been asked before, but I didn't see it in the FAQ and my Google-foo doesn't appear to be working this morning.

Does the Fire Lash ability of the Pyrokineticist PrC require Whip proficiency?

And if it does, would it be an unbalancing house-rule to say that it doesn't? I'm not sure I want to screw over my player who is aiming at this class by requiring him to take a bunch of feats.

06-30-07, 11:53 AM As far as I know, it doesn't require the Whip proficiency, but at the same time, that doesn't mean that acquisition of the class would let him use regular whips. The Fire Lash is a psionic manifestation and (imo) can be controlled partially with using your mind, so no other proficiency needed. It isn't a real whip.

By that reading (which I'm inclined to agree with), you can't do other "whip-stuff" with the lash, right? Like trip or disarm? So it has no physical body, it can hit people with fire damage. So the fact that it is a whip is almost entirely flavor?

06-30-07, 12:38 PM Pretty much. No bypassing the need for the feats with it, just gives you basic control. Not exactly non-physical, though. Definitely has a physical presence. There are other things wrong with the class as written up, too, but that's all been discussed before in other threads.

To my understanding it's a whip that does lethal damage and doesn't care about armor. Well, it's not useless against armor, I should say. Oh, and I believe you wouldn't need to take a feat (or be a Bard), but I'm not sure... will consult books later.
