| pmurray@bigpond.com12-10-07, 11:32 PM | Does a Fire Lash (pyrokineticist) threaten? Do you take AAOs when you use it? Can you add sneak attack die to it? In general - is it the case that Fire Lash is (mechanically) a ranged weapon? Or is there some errata? Oh - if we go the magic/psionics equivalence rule, how do I handle spell resistance? |
| Artector12-10-07, 11:39 PM | Does a Fire Lash (pyrokineticist) threaten? I think so. Edit~ I'll go with Rilem (below this post) on this one. Do you take AAOs when you use it? I believe so. Can you add sneak attack die to it? You can sneak attack with a ballista so long as you are within 30 feet and the target is flat-footed. Assuming the ballista requires an attack roll to use. So, yes. In general - is it the case that Fire Lash is (mechanically) a ranged weapon? Pretty much. Whips are confusing. Or is there some errata? None for Fire Lash that I know of. Oh - if we go the magic/psionics equivalence rule, how do I handle spell resistance? I'd assume no spell resistance, as there is no mention of the manifestor level or power level quivalent that it is. I know, not very conclusive, but that's what I think, its a powerful enough ability that it can stand to have some drawbacks. |
| rilem12-10-07, 11:45 PM | Whips don't threaten, and the Flame Lash is a ranged touch attack, which also doesn't threaten. I'd say it doesn't. The rest sounds right. Consider taking a level in 3.0 Lasher or using TWF (with hand afire, if needed) to threaten. |
| Crimson_Concerto12-11-07, 12:14 AM | Does a Fire Lash (pyrokineticist) threaten?Nope. Ranged attacks don't threaten by default. Do you take AAOs when you use it?Never thought about it before, but now that I do, it is a ranged attack, so I would assume so... Can you add sneak attack die to it?It has an attack roll, so yes. In general - is it the case that Fire Lash is (mechanically) a ranged weapon? It's a ranged touch attack, yes, and it probably qualifies under the category of a weapon-like "spell" (more detail in CArcane?), yes... Or is there some errata? Not to my knowledge. Oh - if we go the magic/psionics equivalence rule, how do I handle spell resistance? No idea. This is a problem all the Pyro abilities have if I remember correctly. No way to calculate manifester level and no power level equivalent. There may be a default way of dealing with this, probably the ML simply equaling HD and the equivalent power level being half HD, but don't quote me on that. |

For creatures with spell-like abilities, a designated caster level defines how difficult it is to dispel their spell-like effects and to define any level-dependent variables (such as range and duration) the abilities might have. The creature’s caster level never affects which spell-like abilities the creature has; sometimes the given caster level is lower than the level a spellcasting character would need to cast the spell of the same name. If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice.Probably should be the same when applied to (Ps) abilities. |
