Greator Animator? [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-11-07, 08:18 PM In the "Psionics with Class" Mind's Eye: Expanded Classes article it listed an alternate class feature for Kineticists:

Greater Animator
* Replaces: The bonus feat at 5th level.
* Prerequisite: Must know Control Object.
* Benefit: Your Animate Object power gains the following augment: For every 1 additional power point you spend, the target object can weigh an additional 25 lbs.

Now, what's the point of this? Control Object doesn't say anything about doing more damage if you animate larger objects, so why would anyone ever take this?

Anyway, the augment is nice simply so you can control bigger things. 100 lbs can be a very small amount. With the augment, you can control a wagon, a barrel full of grog, or the king's throne. Without the augment, you might be able to control an empty barrel if it's not too big.

Compare control object (with this augment) to telekinetic force. TK force can move 50 more pounds, can lift things through the air, can manipulate things as with one hand, allows you to drop and pick up different weights for the duration, and you don't have to give up a feat to learn it. Control object can move things twice as fast, the objects can move like a puppet, they can attack (weakly), they can take attacks of opportunity, and you don't have to use up a 3rd level power known slot to learn it.

It would be really nice if they got it at 1st level instead of 5th. That'd be three whole levels of not having to compete with TK force.

If you can find an object that's very large but light, you can use it for some battlefield control. For instance, consider a suit of padded armor for a Colossal creature. It weighs 120 lbs., has 80 hp, and takes up a 30' x 30' space.

But yeah, it's pretty situational. :)
