| ElyasRavenwood06-12-07, 01:21 PM | I have one quick question. I have an erudite character. He has a Headband of Intellect +4. What does this magical item do for him? Any help would be appreciated thanks. |
| Nephlite06-12-07, 01:29 PM | I have one quick question. I have an erudite character. He has a Headband of Intellect +4. What does this magical item do for him? Any help would be appreciated thanks. The same as manifesting Animal Affinity Intelligence. But unlike the power: it lasts as long as you wear it. Thus more PP, better skill checks (no more skill points though, enhancement bonus don't add those), better DC for Int based manifesting, etc. Also he can now manifest high level powers (you need 19 Int to manifest 9th level powers) Example Erudite with 16 Int manifests level 1 powers with DC 14 (1 level +3 Int mod) With this headband +4: Int becomes 20 so DC will be DC 16 (1 +5 Int mod). |
| skywyze06-12-07, 01:43 PM | Short version: It makes him better at everything he does. Long version: More power points, harder-to-make saves against his powers, and all the usual advantages of int, such as skill checks and int-based checks. |
| ElyasRavenwood06-12-07, 03:27 PM | Thank you gentlemen, I assume you get more psionic strength points because you recalculate your bonus points from table 2-1 page 18 in the expanded psionics handbook with your new elevated ability score. My next question is this: do you spend these extra psionic strength points first, when you begin to manifests powers in a day, or last, at the end of the day when you are scraping the bottom of the barrel of you psionic pool? Are these points spent first, or last? Are they like the Temporary hit points of an aid spell, or the extra hit points from a barbarian’s rage where he boosts his constitution? Thank you. |
| Soahc06-12-07, 03:35 PM | Well, at first I thought you were joking, but.... Anyway you don't use them last, and you don't use them first, if you consider the Power Point pool like a pool, then each individual power point is a drop of water. The bonus points from the headband of intellect are just more drops. It's both bizzare and straight up eccentric to think you can select a individual power point and use it :P Unless of course you name them like I do:D Ex. I cast an augmented 3 power point energy ray of fire, dealing 3D6+3 damage, using Eddy, John, and Carl. |
| skywyze06-12-07, 03:37 PM | They are, for all intents and purposes, added to your base power point pool, indistinguishible from any other power points you may have gotten from your class. They're not spent first or last any more than the other power points your class grants you. And yes, you use that table to calculate your bonus power points. By level 10, about half your power points usually come from your intelligence. Maybe slightly less. They're like the extra hit points you gain from constitution. |
| Bauglir06-12-07, 03:37 PM | Like barbarian rage Hit Points; there is no distinction between them and the ones you normally get. They go away when the item is removed, though, so if you take off the item you have to deduct the difference between the bonus points you get from the item and the bonus points you normally get from your current total (if I understand correctly). There is, however, no need to keep track of how many of them are from the item and how many aren't. Oh, and if you don't feel like using the table, your bonus points are your manifester level times your key ability modifier (Int for you) times 1/2. |
| InkBlot06-12-07, 04:04 PM | As I understand it, you need to wear the headband for 1 day before getting any extra power points. At the start of the next day, when you meditate to get your power points back, you get the extra power points from the headband. |

Thank you.I'm not sure, but I'd say they're more like the barbarian's rage hit points, and thus are used "last." There's no need to distinguish or anything, but if you get, say, 20 extra power points from wearing that headband, you have 20 power points left, and someone sunders your headband, you suddenly drop to 0. |
| Scion of Coldshard06-12-07, 05:42 PM | They go away when the item is removed, though, so if you take off the item you have to deduct the difference between the bonus points you get from the item and the bonus points you normally get from your current total (if I understand correctly). Actually, you dont lose them if your stat changes just like you dont gain any if your stat changes ;) When you get your pp for the day you look at your current stat with any bonuses that do not count taken away (basically animal affinity and the like) and you get your pp filled up to that level. If your prime stat changes later this has no effect on your pool. The same goes for casters and their spell slots. As I understand it, you need to wear the headband for 1 day before getting any extra power points. At the start of the next day, when you meditate to get your power points back, you get the extra power points from the headband. Are there actually rules stating this in 3.5? There was something like that in 3.0, but I dont recall seeing the same text in the 3.5 books. If it is there I would like to see it ;) |

Now I don't have to worry about what the hell happens to my power point total when I manifest metamorphosis. Seriously, having to recalculate my pp pool 7 times per day would get really bothersome. |

| Lycanthromancer06-12-07, 06:11 PM | Yes, but the headband would be absorbed into any form that couldn't wear it. Like, say, an ooze. |
| Tyroki06-13-07, 01:49 AM | Yeah but it would take time for it to reset, and by then, you'd be back wearing your headband again in your original form, no? |
| Fleem06-13-07, 01:15 PM | Hoorah! Now I don't have to worry about what the hell happens to my power point total when I manifest metamorphosis. Seriously, having to recalculate my pp pool 7 times per day would get really bothersome. I have the worst time remembering to lower save DCs when I'm metamorphed, though. |
| Molot06-13-07, 05:10 PM | I have the worst time remembering to lower save DCs when I'm metamorphed, though. There was an enchancement, primarily invented for druids, that, once put on an item, lets it to work even when it's melted into new form. It looks like a thing you'd definitely want on headband. Sadly, I can't recall the exact name (I'm primarily a sorcerer, ya know). |
| Yadot06-13-07, 05:13 PM | I believe the item is Wildling Clasp, but I'm not sure. |
| Scion of Coldshard06-13-07, 06:00 PM | Since it is a headband as long as you change into a form that has a head, or similar appendage, you can be ok pretty easily even with the new rules on changing form. Just take off your headband, change form, and then have yourself or someone else put the headband back on you. Done! ;) |
| DrowBattlemind06-14-07, 01:55 PM | To clarify: If playing a Psion (the only class whose bonus points are figured from Int, rather than Wis [Psychic Warrior] or Cha [Wilder]), it has BIG bonuses, because it raises the amount of bonus power points you receive (as well as more skill points per level). Bonus points are added to your pool; you don't have two separate pools, one for class points and one for bonus points. It's all the same. Otherwise, the only bonus is more skill points, and bonus languages. But hey! While that Illithid is trying to suck your frontal lobes out, you can still insult his orc henchmen in orcish! ;) |
| skywyze06-14-07, 02:19 PM | To clarify: If playing a Psion (the only class whose bonus points are figured from Int, rather than Wis [Psychic Warrior] or Cha [Wilder]) The Erudite is a base class from Complete Psionic. It, like the Psion, uses intelligence as its primary casting stat. |

While that Illithid is trying to suck your frontal lobes out, you can still insult his orc henchmen in orcish! Just to make sure everyone knows, and yes it sucks, an enhancement bonus to int will not grant you more skill points. The headband itself even goes out of its way to say that it does not grant any. :( And from what I understand bonus languages are only awarded to first level characters with a high int, so raising your int later will not get you a new language either. |
| dagman06-14-07, 05:47 PM | do you go into negitive PP when you use all your PP and then take of your headband of intellect off |
| Molot06-14-07, 06:45 PM | do you go into negitive PP when you use all your PP and then take of your headband of intellect offThe explanation I've seen and liked was about that: You should count used power points. If your current power points maximum is less than number of PP used, you can use the difference. Any other situation should count as 0 PP left for game mechanics purposes - but if it's easier for you to think about it as an negative PP, then why not. Sadly, I can't remember where I've seen it, so feel free to treat it as just my personal interpretation/opinion. I'm not going to fight for it. |
| calronmoonflower06-14-07, 06:49 PM | do you go into negitive PP when you use all your PP and then take of your headband of intellect off I cannot recall anything that says that a psion loses power points because their Intelligence score drops. |
| Tyroki06-14-07, 06:54 PM | Where can I find headbands of intellect bookwise? (Or SRD) |
| Lycanthromancer06-14-07, 06:56 PM | IN THE DUNGEON MASTER'S GUIDE. You might want to read the core 3, man. :D |
| Tyroki06-14-07, 07:00 PM | Note to self. This time, actually look in the DMG XD |
| DrowBattlemind06-15-07, 02:25 AM | Just to make sure everyone knows, and yes it sucks, an enhancement bonus to int will not grant you more skill points. SHHHHH! Don't tell the DM that! :incog: |
| Terraneaux06-15-07, 03:28 AM | Actually, just like hit points, you *do* lose power points, turning attempts, and spell slots based off of ability score changes. As was said earlier, keep track of hit points lost, turning attempts used, and so on instead of your current remaining uses/slots/points/whatever. Though keep in mind that nonspontaneous spellcasters still have to prep in slots to use them, as well as losing specific spells when the relevant ability score drops. Example: Ed the wizard is 5th level and only has a base intelligence of 15, but luckily has acquired a headband of intellect +2 in his travels. This grants him 2 second level spell slots. Over the course of an adventure, an ethereal filcher grabs his headband and absconds with it. His intelligence has now dropped to the point where he has lost a 3rd level spell slot. If he has already cast one or more third level spells that day, he is out of 3rd level spells. If he has not, he must choose which spell he loses. Later, Ed, now angry, tracks down the filcher and takes his headband back. If he has already cast two third level spells for the day, he is still out of spell slots. If he has only cast one or none, he now has a new, empty spell slot that he must prep a spell in. Spontaneous casters are somewhat easier, you track spell slots like hit points. Same thing with turning attempts and power points. |
| axenome06-16-07, 02:55 PM | What I want to know is, with all these wizards and psions wearing their headbands all the time to make sure they always have those bonus PP and Spell Slots, when do they wash the headbands? Wearing a headband for 6 months straight is gonna make ANY piece of cloth pretty funky, even if you shampoo it daily 0.o |

Most beautiful RP spell on the face of the planet. Not sure for psions. |
| Molot06-16-07, 03:59 PM | You need to wash a headband less often than go to toilet. Do you remember last session your character actually went to the toilet? It's a game, after all. Not everything need to be perfectly like a life. Btw, 0'th level spell (prestidigitation) is capable of cleaning anything, possible psi powers can do that as well. Why not :P |

AFAICT, you aren't even supposed to get extra skill points for past levels if you raise your INT permanently (level or wishes, for instance.) I, personally, thought that was bunk, as you get extra hit points per level for raising your CON. |
| Scion of Coldshard06-16-07, 04:20 PM | Actually, just like hit points, you *do* lose power points, turning attempts, and spell slots based off of ability score changes. Can you cite rules to support this? You don't get bonus skill points for Intelligence boosting items or spells. AFAICT, you aren't even supposed to get extra skill points for past levels if you raise your INT permanently (level or wishes, for instance.) The tomes actually say that the inherant bonus does work for gaining skill points I believe. Hope that helps ;) |
| Bauglir06-16-07, 05:55 PM | Yes, but they don't get you retroactive skill points for past levels, is the thing. So your skill ranks will be a bit uneven because of the points you didn't have then. Kind of like when you raise your Int for gaining a level divisible by 4. No new retroactive skill points. Which, like he said, is annoying. Every other ability score doesn't care what you did in the past, you get all the benefits now. |

I, personally, thought that was bunk, as you get extra hit points per level for raising your CON. Yes, but however, I plead not guilty by insanity... my headband is apparently cursed.... that, and it's been several months since I've read the DMG and hadn't bothered to look it up before spouting off. |
| Zemyla06-18-07, 04:17 PM | For arcanists- prestidigitation. Most beautiful RP spell on the face of the planet. Not sure for psions. I think they made a psionic prestidigitation in Secrets of Sarlona, that also had the function of open/close. |
