| Tugg09-24-07, 01:18 PM | Before i start, i'm sorry if i got this in the wrong forum, but i wasn't sure and this seemed to be the right place (what with it being psionics and all) Anywho... For my next character i'm gonig to make a psion , going into the Psion uncarnate PrC. But i have very little experience in psionics so i'd be greatful for some help from those with more experience. I want a good character but I don't want to be a powergamer, we have one in our group *shudders*, and am quite fond of roleplaying. I also want him to be useful before the character gets the prestige class, not just the wet drip until then. Here are my idea's for my guy so far. I think i can get into PU (psion Uncarnate) at level 6 (psion 5, PU 1), but as i said i want to be useful, even if i'm not the most useful, so could you give suggestion for spell etc level by level please. After my ideas, feel free to add or suggest changes. I have the EPH and CP so feel free to take spell/feat etc from both. Apart from that core only (unless it's reeeally good :P, one of the people in my group might have the book) Race: Kalashtar. I quite like the idea of the kalashtar, they have some good roleplay potential, plus +1 power point a level is pretty good mechanically. Stats: we're going by 28 point-buy. Here's my idea: Str 10, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 16, 8 Wis, Char 12. I'm sick of my characters having their dump-stat as charisma so i'd thought i'd make it wisdom instead. It also ties in with his personality, as he can be easy to fool, and often just accepts things for what they are. Dex is for when i'm incorpreal, as i use dex instead of Str for attack + damage rolls (i think), also it gives me some AC. Discipline: I was thinking of going Egoist. Once i get PU (psion uncarnate) i'll probably be going into melee (not tanking) as i'd be incorpreal and i can use the incorpreal touch ability (with powers if they can be used together) and animal affinity could help raise hit points. Spells: Well, first one that springs to mind is inertial armor, what with it being +4 AC lasting an hour/level and because of the prestige class, it still provides AC when i'm uncarnate (incorpreal). The only other spell that might be useful is if there is one that makes me incorpreal, but i don't know if one exists, so that i'm not restricted by my 1 use/day of shed body. I'd like some damaging spells and if there is a spell that make me incorpreal, then they can be touch so i can use them with the PrC. Utility spells i haven't got a clue about, plus it all depends on my discipline. Feats: well i want to use either a scimitar or shortsword, so i'd have to get the profs for that, but that might be able to wait for after level one. Psionic body at 1st level maybe, as that may i will have more hitpoints, but it's not essential until later levels as it is a prequistate for the Prc). Other feat that i thought were psionic weapon (good for more damage) and psionic meditation, so i could use psionic weapon more :D . Thats about all i have come up with so far. If you can suggest anything i will be very thankful. Cheers in advance folks, i don't think i'll be able to say that enough :D . |
| carnivore09-24-07, 02:56 PM | first .... welcome to the psionics Board now ... to the task: 1)Attributes could be better....try this: Kalashtar Egoist 8 Str.......... since Metamorphosis is the Keystone Power for an Egoist...most of your Physical Stats are Dump Stats...... you do need a good Con, for when you are not Metamorphed into another form 10 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 14 Wis.... wisdom, needs to be at least 13, might as well go 14...there are several VERY useful Psionic Feats that Require Wisdom 13+ 12 Cha but here is the Problem. ...... Egoists focus on Physical Change to themselves, to buff themselves and Kick butt.... Psion Uncarnate try to focus on more Mental Aspects of themselves... eventually Sheding thier Corporeal Form Completely. they really dont mix well.. .... try this: Telepath or Shaper both would be Fun as a Psion Uncarnate, Telepath would let you affect the minds of others without fear of attack by Corporeal Foes...... Shaper would allow you to make stuff without it affecting you if you do plan to continue as a Psion Uncarnate .... there is a single feat that will be most Useful to you: Ghostly Grasp(Libris Mortis p27)...... allows you to use items as normal after you reach the final level in the PrC hope this helps ... it is a start :D |
| Jaid09-24-07, 05:17 PM | i would highly recommend burrowing power. fits nicely with the flavor too, imo ;) as far as it goes, btw, you will have to put a lot more effort into being useful *after* you enter the PrC than you will *before* you enter the PrC. this isn't a magic prestige class, you know, there are actual drawbacks. such as losing a bunch of manifester levels. (some sort of ability to see through stuff is also good, lets you target through walls, but also more importantly these two things combined will let you attack from inside of an object!) |
| PhaedrusXY09-24-07, 06:47 PM | I would suggest using an Ardent instead, and taking Practiced Manifester. This will be able to withstand the manifester level losses from Uncarnate alot more easily than a Psion. |
| Eldritch_Lord09-24-07, 09:52 PM | I second the shaper notion. I played a Shaper/Psion Uncarnate in a short campaign a while ago with Burrowing Power, wall of ectoplasm, and Expanded Knowledge(clairvoyant sense. Wall off your enemies, send powers through the wall at them, and move to melee range when they're softened up. Good times. You want to leverage your incorporeality as much as possible. Make sure you know exactly what can and cannot affect you in incorporeal form and act appropriately: attack enemies' ghost touch weapons, dispel inertial armor, focus on hindering/entangling powers, etc. |

Wall off your enemies, send powers through the wall at them, and move to melee range when they're softened up. Good times. Although some debate that you cannot use burrowing power through walls of ectoplasm. Ectoplasm is drawn from the astral plane.. so once you try and 'skip' powers through your wall of ectoplasm it would stay there. ;) |
| carnivore09-24-07, 10:37 PM | a Wall of Ectoplasm... may have been drawn from the Astral Plane, but it is on the Material Plane now, and not the Astral... thus when your Power Skips to the Astral... it encounters Nothing.... and functions as intended :D |
| sijigs09-24-07, 11:24 PM | a Wall of Ectoplasm... may have been drawn from the Astral Plane, but it is on the Material Plane now, and not the Astral... thus when your Power Skips to the Astral... it encounters Nothing.... and functions as intended :D Yea, I thought that too. But part of the argument was.. "that's why it blocks ethereal creatures.. " I must find that thread again. |
| Harbin_Dunewalker09-24-07, 11:40 PM | The Ethereal Plane and the Astral Plane are separate entities, so it would make sense that something that could block Ethereal travel might not block Astral travel. Would you expect a Wall of Force to block a Teleport effect? |
| Tugg09-25-07, 03:37 AM | I would suggest using an Ardent instead, and taking Practiced Manifester. This will be able to withstand the manifester level losses from Uncarnate alot more easily than a Psion. My current charcter is an Ardent, so i don't really want to play another one. THanks for the usggestions guys, i will take it all on board. I'll proably make a telepath, mainly because i don't really like the idea of it, plus telepath fits in more with the character, and there are a few spells that i can use so i can do something, no tjust sit there shooting my crossbow :D |
| Moosh Nailo09-27-07, 05:52 PM | I'm with Carnivore on this one. Check out the Ghostwalk campaign. Its all over the place there, ectoplasm is effectively a ghost touch substance. Makes sense, works well, and is easy to implement. |
