| MindFlayerZoidberg10-15-07, 01:36 AM | Well, my DM's freaked out a bit over Mind Thrust. . .yes, I know, the awesome splendor and power. They said they have never seen a 4th wizard with a spell able to put up 4d10 (5d10 with overchannel), and were talking to me about nerfing the power, and possibly other stuff in the future, because Psioinics is overpowered:rolleyes:. But they said they will see how it goes. Thing is they have only seen 'core' wizards, let just say most of the players in our group are unoptimized, and the DM's are not use to players using 5-10 different books to create a powerful character. So . . . Can I get some help finding an arcane 'precedent'; a way for a 4th lvl wizard, with minimal effort, using most of the splat books, to somehow, someway, conjure up a spell, using a feat or two, that can equal 25 points damage on average? Preferably multiple ways, maybe even using Divine magic as well. Thanks again, and I will call upon your help again when I need to do the same thing with Metamorphic Transfer and a Ten-Headed Hydra. |

Thanks again, and I will call upon your help again when I need to do the same thing with Metamorphic Transfer and a Ten-Headed Hydra. you could always point out that it's a single target power and requires a will save. If they make the save, bam, no damage. and being a first level power, the save won't be in the HRR until you're really high level. At most it's what? 15? 16? maybe 17 if you're using feats... and thats with a really good int mod. Anywho, you could always point out that a wizard can get a reserve feat (firey burst) and do 2d6 fire damage per round for the entire campaign as long as they keep a second level fire spell prepped. Or you could point out that you can manifest that what? maybe 8 times in a day if you do nothing else? most likely you're going to need to do more than just explode one person at a time. You probably will have to monger your power points and conserve them to be useful in the fights. also, the will save factor rules out using it against mindless things, like zombies, skeletons, and constructs. If that's your only damage power, you're pretty screwed when having to fight such things. you could always point out the omnicifer, or pun pun. Those are broken. What you're using is a power that's balanced. It's not casting a first level spell to do 4d10, it's like casting four first level spells to do 4d10. if all else fails, go to the character op boards and ask how much a level 4 wizard could do, damage wise. |
| Tsuul10-15-07, 03:38 AM | -Fireball cast at 5th level deals 17.5 damage to each target. 2 targets puts this over mind thrust. -Deep Slumber, pretty much a save or die as a 3rd level wizard spell to 10HD worth of creatures. -Hold person 3rd again, single target save or die. Mind Thrust is useful when the party rogue is [for sneak attacking]. Which is not enough. |

| MindFlayerZoidberg10-15-07, 04:46 AM | So far, here is my argument: Kelgore's Fire Bolt (PHII) 1st level Wiz/Sor Mind Thrust 1st level Psi/Wilder With 18 Int Wizard: (4) Cantrips, (4) 1st lvl spells, (3) 2nd level My Psion: 24 PP; (6) 4PP Mind Thrusts' Fire Bolt vs. Mind Thrust 1d6<1d10 Range Med>Range Close Ref ½>Will negates Fire Resistant >Mind Affecting Immune (way more Monsters immune to MA) SR: partial (still deals 1d6)>PR: Yes (3) 2nd lvl spells, 4 Cantrips>>> . . . Quarterstaff 5>1 Then, for a wizard, at 5th lvl . . . Fireball, with Long Range, and a 20ft burst. It levels off at 10d6/lvl . . . right before Wizards get Disintegrate (2d6 per caster lvl [max 40d6]. Disintegrate vs. Augmented Mind Thrust . . . I don’t even need to get into that. |
| Fafnir10-15-07, 08:55 AM | 3rd level, Hold Person. 5th level, Hold Monster, Dominate Person. These are all (Will negates). It's that enough for an argument? :D |
| carnivore10-15-07, 09:17 AM | what about this: Human Wizard 1 feats: Bloodline of Fire(regional) ......... +2 CL fire spells Arcane Thesis(Kelgores Firebolt) ..... +2 CL this spell, and -1 Metamagic Spl lvl when adding Metamagic effects now you have a 1st lvl Wizard...casting a 1st lvl Spell...with a 5th lvl Caster lvl..doing 5d6 with each casting :D |
| Tempest Stormwind10-15-07, 10:42 AM | Carnivore, that's cheating. Check the requirements on Arcane Thesis again. Really, though, all you need to do is point out that Mind Thrust is close-range, mind-affecting, and will-NEGATES. I have previously done comparisons between it and Scorching Ray (a core 2nd level wizard spell) or Shocking Grasp (1st level), using actual data derived from CR 3 and CR 4 monsters, that clearly shows that Mind Thrust is good, but not as good as anyone thinks. (And as you go up in level, the others retain their usefulness while Mind Thrust stagnates...) |
| Lycanthromancer10-15-07, 02:49 PM | You can have a fighter swinging his two-handed sword for 2d6+6 damage each round, every round, all day long (not including feats such as Power Attack). How is 1d10 on a Will negates power GOOD damage potential again? |
| carnivore10-15-07, 04:11 PM | ...forgot about the 9 skill rank req.... opps... still the idea will work... just change Arcane Thesis .... to IIRC, "Fire Elemental Heritage(Planar Handbook)"... adds +1 CL of fire based spells thus a 1st lvl Wizard.... using Kelgores Firebolt.... will have a Caster level of 4... thus 4d6 damage Wizards with Free Scalling Spells are far worse than a Psion with a Mind-Affecting, Will Negates 1d10/PP power :D |
| Callix10-15-07, 05:19 PM | 3rd level, Hold Person. 5th level, Hold Monster, Dominate Person. These are all (Will negates). It's that enough for an argument? :D If you fail your save, you lose the fight. Against Mind Thrust, if you fail your save, you take a bit of damage. Compare Hold Monster and a 9pp Mind Thrust. Hold Monster has a longer range (Medium>Close), a higher save DC (15+stat>11+stat), and gives the rest of the party a chance to CDG the victim, instead of 9d10 damage (average 49.5), which is respectable, but not a one-shot kill. |
| sijigs10-15-07, 10:21 PM | You can have a fighter swinging his two-handed sword for 2d6+6 damage each round, every round, all day long (not including feats such as Power Attack). How is 1d10 on a Will negates power GOOD damage potential again? LOL.. For my first Eberron PC and to keep things simple, I was a warforged fighter with a two-handed sword and by 5th level had Adamantine Body, Power Attack, Cleave, Powerful Charge and Improved Powerful Charge. Off the top of my head. With a Potion of Enlarge everytime I charged I was dropping 4d6* + 3d6 + Str + other mod all day. My DM was beside himself everytime I crit. Hahaha. *pls correct me if I'm wrong about 2-handed sword damage scaling to Huge. |
| EonEdge10-16-07, 12:55 AM | okay let's also look at the actual damage potential here. With a fifty-fifty chance of a failed save the mindthrust will do on average: (1+10)/2 = 5.5 damage on a failed save 0 damage on a successful save (5.5+0)/2 = 2.75 so 2.75 average damage per die augmented to 3 = 3*2.75 = 8.25 average damage a 1d6 from a spell with save for half would do: (1+6)/2 = 3.5 (3.5)/2 = 1.75 (3.5 + 1.75)/2 = 2.625 at CL 3 = 3*2.625 = 7.875 so with a 50/50 chance of failed save the spell does a whapping .125 less damage per die, or .375 at three m/c levels BUT that doesn't even take into account the fact that a 2nd level spell has a 5% greater chance of failling(the dc is increadsed by 1) so let's add that into the calculation: [.55(3.5) + .45(1.75)]/2 = 2.8 caster level 3 = 3*2.8 = 8.4 so now with a 2nd level spell vs the mind thrust, the 2nd level spell has a slight advantage with a base 50/50 odds of save. This edge will actually increase, significantly as the chance of failed save decreases, though mind thrust will improve as chance to save decreases. overall the 2nd level spell that does 3d6 will outshine a mindthrust of 3d10 because it is more reliable and works on a much larger group of enimies. now if we facter in overchannel the mind thrust pumps up to 4d10 but the caster takes 1d8 damage, that's a significant amount, at least to my 15 hp psion(and she's fourth with a con of 14). at level three i only had 12 hp, i never would have considered overchanneling, unless i had talented, and then i would have had to spend two feats and expend my psionic focus just to do it, where as there are several feats that increase caster level of certain spells for free. that's the argument i would use, it's a number cruncher's approach and any one with a shred of logic can follow it. |

So yes, that's exaggarated damage. Of course, a Large or larger enemy with a guisarme and Improved Trip would've had fun with your warforged. Touch attack at -2 AC (Charging), then Strength checks to trip. If you're tripped, you provoke when you stand up (disarm anyone?), when you try to close again, and when you pick up your weapon again if disarmed. Each time you provoke, you end up either empty-handed or on your backside. And this monster's five-foot-stepping away every round. Fun, huh? |
| CrimsonDeath10-16-07, 03:32 AM | Off the top of my head. With a Potion of Enlarge everytime I charged I was dropping 4d6* + 3d6 + Str + other mod all day. I guess you didn't notice that Enlarge Person only works on Humanoids? Or did you have Psionic Tattoos (decals) of Expansion? |
| RadicalTaoist10-16-07, 05:50 PM | Psionic Tattoos (decals) This is X to the Z your boy Xzibit; I'm about to pimp your 'forged. |

DM hasn't thrown any large guisarmed weilding monsters, thankfully. But yeah, good combo.. similar to spiked chain trick. I guess you didn't notice that Enlarge Person only works on Humanoids? Or did you have Psionic Tattoos (decals) of Expansion? Apologies to both - I can't remember the build exactly. I may have take a level as a PsyWar.. and dropped Improved Powerful Charge for Psionic Weapon. But anyways.. :P to me. |
| VeritasAeternum10-19-07, 07:38 PM | Don't have all my books handy, but off the top of my head: Enlarge Person (clr2, str1?)+ Mnk5 = +4/+4 @ 2d8+2 (minimum str bonus with enlarge and a str of 10 . . . what monk in his right mind has a strength of 10?) Assuming 2 successful hits (which is at least as likely as a failed will save), you're pumping out around 20 damage/round on average. Sure, this is between two characters, but that's what buff-centric clerics are for, right? |
| GoriceXII10-21-07, 10:58 AM | Also I'd advise your DM to check out the free D20 site's list of psionic abilities if he doesn't care to get the Psionic's Handbook or anything. I assume you have it though and could lend it to him? I had never had a psionic character in a serious way in my game till recently and at first I was a little intimidated until I actually read the book and realized that psionic characters can actually be very vulnerable and that a number of creatures can be deadly opponents for them. |
