Being construsts psicrystals can't benefit from normal healing. Psionic Repair Damage is a shaper power, so other psions can't use it (even with a power stone or djore)

Short of relying on Use Psionic Device, how can a kineticist keep his little buddy healthy and active?

I believe the Repair line of spells / powers are used to repair constructs. Depending on how much you expect it to take damage, expanded knowledge / researching it might be of use.

Failing that, is there another casting capable of casting it? (even a scroll of repair off UMD)

That or hands in pockets and buy a service.

On the one hand, the psicrystal is very difficult to repair/heal. On the other hand, you don't lose XP like the familiar's death costs your arcane buddy. Is it a fair trade-off?

On topic:

In Mind's Eye Archives 3.5 is a power called "Ectoplasmic Repair", which repairs 1d4 HP of a construct. 1st level power for psion/wilder/psywar.

It is confusing that the description clearly forbids the repair of a psicrystal - probaly a copy/paste error from the mending spell. We houseruled it to allow psicrystal repair.

Another way would be the craft (gemcutter) skill - DC 20 to repair a single HP, takes ten minutes for a check.

The third way used in our campaign was - don't repair it. If it is destroyed, you meditate a day and get a new one, w/o cost (XP loss or gold). The DM even allowed another personality for the critter. Since there is no official rule on how long it takes to regain a psicrystal, this is a houserule as well.

Somehow when I read this thread the following question came up:

Wouldn't it be possible (although not very efficient) to metamorphosis the psichrystal into a creature with a type that allows 'conventional' healing?

An oil of repair light damage cost as much as a potion of cure light wounds. Aside from that, I'd suggest the gemcutting solution.

A creature with this feat can repair constructs that have taken damage. In one day of work, the creature can repair up to 20 points of damage by expending 50 gp per point of damage repaired.

That is taken from the feat Craft Construct, but should apply to Craft Psionic Construct feat as well.

Eberron has the repair damage line spells, maybe you can convince your party's arcane caster to pick up one of those or buy a wand.

Why can't you just use Share Powers and manifest Body Adjustment? Is it because of the reference to "natural healing processes"?

Psionic Repair Damage
Metacreativity
Level: Shaper 2
Display: Material and visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Construct touched
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Power Resistance: Yes (harmless)
Power Points: 3

When laying your hands upon a construct that has at least 1 hit point remaining, you reknit its structure to repair damage it has taken. The power repairs 3d8 points of damage +1 point per manifester level. Constructs that are immune to psionics or magic cannot be repaired in this fashion.
Augment

For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power repairs an additional 1d8 points of damage.

Guys, it's in the SRD. Anyway, just be a shaper which is powerful in its own right with all the cool stuff it can do. (Best Psion Discipline IMO)

I think I'll just make a new power.

Psionic Repair Psicrystal Construct
Psion/Wilder 2
As Psionic Repair Construct, but can only be manifested on your psicrystal.

Slap that into a djore and I'm all set!

If you are at least level 5 and have a feat to spare, you can take Expanded Knowledge (Psionic Repair Damage)..... Otherwise, I'd suggest using Craft (Gemcutting) to repair your Psicrystal, as per the Warforged repair rules in the Eberron Campaign Setting.

Feats are far too precious to spend on what appears to be an oversight in psicrystal design. I like to think the section describing how they can be healed by spending power points is right below the section on what to do when they die.

Not allowed by RAW: having a power or item to heal my psicrystal without spending a feat or relying on Use Psionic Device.

Allowed by RAW: Giving the psicrystal the leadership feat and creating a shaper cohort to heal the crystal (And to setup affinity-field/bestow power loops for infinite power points, and a few other rules abuses that require two psions)

I don't think anyone will complain about my proposal when I describe the official alternative. :-)

If you don't want to resort to a feat or UPD, that power should still fit in a crawling tattoo, right? I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that crystals aren't allowed to have regular tattoos.
InkBlot

07-13-07, 01:59 PM
The rules state that "a psionic tattoo usually covers an area of skin no more than 5 inches in diameter" and that "a creature must have an appropriate physical surface on which to scribe the pattern." The examples the book gives as being unable to wear tattoos are fire elementals and incorporeal creatures. Crystal is a physical material, but is it appropriate? It's not skin, but was the part about skin meant to be definitive?

In other words; maybe. You'll have to ask your DM.

Maybe psionic repair damage should be a psion/wilder power (or any manifester power) and ecto protection should be a shaper-only power?
InkBlot

07-13-07, 02:18 PM
Well, a non-shaper has to spend a feat to get astral construct, but everybody has to spend a feat to get a psicrystal. Both powers only benefit people who take a certain feat.

Then again, the only other power which can be used almost only with psicrystals is solicit psicrystal, and that's on the psion/wilder list.

You have a good point. I'd boost ecto protection if it were moved to the shaper list, probably by making the saving throw bonus apply to all saves instead of just the one to resist dismiss ectoplasm.

Maybe I'm being too simple, but could you use Body Adjustment with share powers to affect the psicrystal?

Per the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org):
Share Powers (Su)
At the owner’s option, he can have any power (but not any psi-like ability) he manifests on himself also affect his psicrystal. The psicrystal must be within 5 feet of him at the time of the manifestation to receive the benefit. If the power has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the psicrystal if it moves farther than 5 feet away, and will not affect the psicrystal again, even if it returns to its owner before the duration expires.

Additionally, the owner can manifest a power with a target of “You” on his psicrystal (as a touch range power) instead of on himself. The owner and psicrystal cannot share powers if the powers normally do not affect creatures of the psicrystal’s type (construct).
Traits
A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

No Constitution score.
Low-light vision.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects.
Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected.
Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the table.
Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with no armor.
Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe.Psychometabolism (Healing)
Level: Psion/wilder 3, psychic warrior 2
Display: Auditory and material
Manifesting Time: 1 round
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: Instantaneous
Power Points: Psion/wilder 5, psychic warrior 3

You take control of your body’s healing process, curing yourself of 1d12 points of damage. As usual, when regular damage is healed, an equal amount of nonlethal damage is also healed.

Augment
For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power heals an additional 1d12 points of damage.

Perhaps I'm missing something else, or misinterpreting what I've posted, but I think it's allowable. The share powers ability seems to allow Body Adjustment, and I don't see anything in the construct traits entry stopping it from working. It's not a necromancy effect, and I don't think this counts as "healing on their own."

So, if this is valid, then it can be healed with a simple 3rd level psion power.

First, the assumption by the OP is Being construsts [sic] psicrystals can't benefit from normal healing...
So we respond based on this statement.

Also, to support his position:
Constructs can be repaired. Since they have no constitution score, they have no health or stamina (definition of constitution from SRD), so no healing, unless they have the fast healing quality or have some other documented method of healing (like the golems in the MM do).

That might have been the two things I was missing.

It makes enough sense, but I was curious as to why my "obvious" answer wasn't already posted. I figured there must be a reason. ;)

The psion-killer is described as often having useful psionic tattoos. That sets a precedent for constructs being able to use them.

I would have them heal just like undead - only intelligent undead heal on their own - so psicrystals will do the same.

The rules of the game articles on constructs states that cure wounds effects do not work on constructs, and Body Adjustments states that it cures the target of hit point damage.

Weak, I know, but bear with me.

Also under sharing powers The owner and psicrystal cannot share powers if the powers normally do not affect creatures of the psicrystal's type (construct).

In the article on polymorphing, in reference to polymorph any object it states that you can turn yourself or someone else into a construct and the target gains the following traits:
Rules of the Game: 2004/06/01 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040601a)
You get the following:

-- No Constitution score. (A natural consequence of not being alive.)

-- Cannot heal damage on their own, but you often can be repaired by exposing yourself to a certain kind of effect (see the creature's description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality. (This also stems from your lack of a Constitution score.)

The conclusion is that without a constitution score, you cannot heal damage, although this could have been better clarified by stating that a construct is immune to (healing) (sub school) effects.

As an example true metabolism, and 8th level power you could share with your psicrystal specifically states that You must have a Constitution score to gain any of this power's benefits.

Which means the psicrystal is out of luck from an 8th level fast healing power.

The rules of the game articles on constructs states that cure wounds effects do not work on constructs, and Body Adjustments states that it cures the target of hit point damage.
But Body Adjustment is not a Cure Wounds effect. The words "cure" and "wounds" aren't in the name of the power.

The owner and psicrystal cannot share powers if the powers normally do not affect creatures of the psicrystal's type (construct).
Nothing in the description of Psychometabolism powers, Psychometabolism (Healing) powers, or the Body Adjustment power itself mentions any sort of creature types.

In the article on polymorphing, in reference to polymorph any object it states that you can turn yourself or someone else into a construct and the target gains the following traits:

-- No Constitution score. (A natural consequence of not being alive.)

-- Cannot heal damage on their own, but you often can be repaired by exposing yourself to a certain kind of effect (see the creature's description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. The conclusion is that without a constitution score, you cannot heal damage, although this could have been better clarified by stating that a construct is immune to (healing) (sub school) effects.
First, the psicrystal is not healing damage on its own. If that argument leads us to conclude that Body Adjustment can't heal it, then we must also conclude that Psionic Repair Damage can't heal it, even though that's explicitly what it says it does, because the psicrystal's creature description does not state that Psionic Repair Damage can heal it.

Furthermore, it isn't true that "without a constitution score, you cannot heal damage". Intelligent undead recover HP at a rate of 1HP/HD/day.

As an example true metabolism, and 8th level power you could share with your psicrystal specifically states that
You must have a Constitution score to gain any of this power's benefits.
Which means the psicrystal is out of luck from an 8th level fast healing power.
True, the psicrystal can't be healed by True Metabolism, because True Metabolism specifically says so. True Metabolism does not, however, say anything about Body Adjustment, and Body Adjustment doesn't say anything about constructs.

The only thing I could find about Body Adjustment that implies it might not work on a psicrystal is because the list of Construct traits includes "cannot heal damage", and the Body Adjustment power includes the phrase "You take control of your body's healing process". I wasn't sure if that phrase implied that Body Adjustment couldn't heal a psicrystal, and so far, nobody in this thread has addressed that point.

Of course, even if that means Body Adjustment won't work, I just noticed that Empathic Transfer contains no such phrase, so it should work just fine.

I agree that I'm not 100% convinced on the logic behind it. So far all I've seen to argue against it is fairly weak. It involves extrapolating rulings from similar (but different) sources. I have to agree with your above post (#26)

Maybe just a mending cantrip. I know it doesn't address hp, but since there is no real listed cost to it actually being destroyed, this could be a way to repair it.

Two problems. First, the psicrystal is a creature while Mending affects objects. Second, Mending doesn't actually say anything about what happens to the object's HP.

As was suggested above, a crawling tatoo of Psionic Repair Damage is available to anyone, and a lot cheaper per point of healing than the Craft Construct feat. Craft Gemcutting is even free. Most of the time though, hardness 8 means your psicrystal shouldn't be damaged much, unless you intentionally put it in harms way.
