How good can a psicrystal hide? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-03-07, 03:44 PM My freinds don't allow psionics becuase when one person played a psion he was able to cast through his psicrystal and they said it had a insane hide check. I found an online refrence of psionics and i couldn't find out how good of hiding it could do. Can anyone tell me how high they could have there psicrystal hide after casting a power through it?

04-03-07, 03:52 PM Since psicrystal is diminutive it has +12 size bonus on hide checks, +2 for dex (15) = +14 on 1st level. AFAIK that gets beat up only by whisper gnome rogue (+20 on hide checks on 1st level).

04-03-07, 04:02 PM Depends how many ranks the Psion takes. A psicrystal doesn't earn skills on its own.

It also depends if it's allowed feats...

It'd still be the same unless the psion took ranks in Hide.

I'm kind of startled that this single item resulted in psionics not being allowed. Seems a bit trigger-happy to me when a druid with wolf or bear animal companion can pull off some disgusting combinations.

04-03-07, 09:48 PM A bit funny, as he needs to spend a feat for this "class feature" and the psicrystal suffers a very big penalty to its Hide check when it attacks from hiding. It also can't do this for longer than a day, and always needs cover or concealment to hide (both of which can make it harder to manifest powers). It also might have a hard time making its Move Silently checks, and if it gets caught it will be crushed in a matter of seconds. As mentioned, the psion needs to put ranks in Hide to do this properly. Finally, it has a maximum range of 40', it needs to get very close to do this.

Where it is stated that psicrystals don't gain skill points?
XPH only states that the psicrystal uses it's owners ranks, but as an intelligent construct it should gain 2+int mode skill points and a feat (as any other intelligent construct).

Skills
A psicrystal has the same skill ranks as its owner, except that it has a minimum of 4 ranks each in Spot, Listen, Move Silently, and Search. (Even if its owner has no ranks in these skills, a psicrystal has 4 ranks in each.) A psicrystal uses its own ability modifiers on skill checks.
It does not say that is uses his owers ranks it says that it has it owners ranks this overwrites the normal 2+Int rule. It still gains feats, what is nice. ;)
