I called it a Hostile Cognizance Crystals

The item is a crystal that when thrown at a character with power points (normal attack) absorbs 1d12 power points, and then shatters. The target hit doesn’t get a save when he looses the Power Points but, the shards can be collected and any manifester could use the power points in the shards like a Cognizance Crystal except they can’t be recharged.

The idea was to really inconvenience the party Psion for one fight with out ruining him for the whole day. He would loose 1d12 power points but still have a few points for emergencies even if he lost 12 points.

The level 3 party is on a local assassins guilds’ sh*t list. While the party was on a dark city street, they get attacked by a bad guy who is big on using magical creatures. Think evil ranger. While standing dramatically on a near by roof the bad guy calls a demonic dog type monster (I forget the name) to fight the party. The party starts to attack the dog, the psion mind thrusts the ranger type bad guy and kills him in the first round. Then a guy in the shadows throws the Hostile Cognizance Crystals at the psion sucking up a huge number of power points.

Sounds like a pretty cool item, as long as the pcs can somehow gain access to it themselves i see no problem at all. even if that requires them stealing the recipe from the thieves guild

out of curiosity a couple questions how much does it cost can it be upgraded?

I hadn’t stated its cost. None of my players have shown any interest in crafting. But I am planning of letting them find some as treasure.

Off the top of my head I would guess you would need the Craft Cognizance Crystal [Item Creation] feat. And making one would take one day per 1,000g and cost 1/25 of its base price in XP and use up raw materials costing one-half its base price.

1d12 = 4,000g each shard holds 1PP
2d12 = 16,000g each shard holds 2PPs
3d12 = 36,000g each shard holds 3PPs
4d12 = 64,000g each shard holds 4PPs

Do the PCs know that they can collect the fragments to use the PP stored inside? It might be a lot less troublesome if they know (or have some way of finding out, like a Knowledge: Psionics check). The fact that it doesn't allow a save seems fine, since there's an attack roll involved. Ranged touch, I'm guessing? What's the range increment?

1d12 has the potential to wipe out a low-level psion. At level 3 with 18 Int and no racial PP or relevant feats, a Psion will only have 17 PP. A good roll can wipe out 3/4 of his daily allotment. Not to mention that 4000gp is a bit much for a one-use item being used by/against a level 3 party. Consider that, for almost as much, the assassins' guild could've outfitted there operative with a Wand of Scorching Ray with 44 charges, or a Wand of Magic Missle CL 5, either of which would be a more useful tool for assassination and would probably last for more than one battle. So it was probably simultaneously a bit overpriced, and a bit of overkill against your party.

The fact that they can be picked up and used by the creature that was just hit makes them less dangerous, which makes them definitely overpriced.

Assuming that the target knows he can do that.

Oh, and for the record... After the bits are gathered up, does each one store 1PP, or does the pile of shards store all the PP together? (In other words, does the person using thsoe shards have to use the PP stored inside one at a time?)
