Font of Power + Timestop + Temporal Reiteration = ...

Am I missing anything, or does that basically give you the ability to stop time forever for yourself?

Because if it works, I think I'll be making an Elan Nomad who's suddenly going to realise one fine morning that he can rob the universe blind from the comfort of his own little null-time bubble (no need for food, no need for aging, infinite pp, and the ability to go so fast no one in the universe can interact with you...)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this is really an infinte PPs for an infintie time combo. Let me take that back, you could have the infinite PPs and an infinite time, however it is in "apparent time". You would actually be in a swift action for eternity, until you choose to leave it. Of course while you're there none of your powers nor your attacks will affect any of your enemies. And then, once you do decide to leave, then you still only have Font of Power for the 1 minute of its duration.

Like I said, I' not 100% that I'm right either, but as I read the descriptions of Font of Power, Temporal Acceleration and Temporal Reiteration, this is what it looks like it would equal to me.
Sagetim

10-07-07, 02:24 PM
font of power would run out in ten rounds of apparent time. Therefore you'd have about ten rounds of pot shots even with infinite time, then go back to normal levels of pp's.

edit: oh wait...now I see what it's doing...nevermind.

I guess i still don't see it...

temporal reiteration basically let's you make a round's duration of an effect not count towards when it runs out. if you use it on font of power, it will never run out. therefore you have infinite PP as long as you keep on manifesting temporal reiteration.

if you then use some of those infinite PP to manifest temporal accelleration regularly, you end up with a more-or-less infinite loop (basically it lasts for as long as you want).

of course, metamind still isn't worth it, but it sounds like it could be done.

that being said, it would get old pretty quick not being able to affect anyone else, so i doubt it would last forever =P

You might not be able to affect other creatures, but you can affect unattended objects. You could spend a hundred years writing the world's greatest novel ever, and then spend another thousand on the world's greatest sculpture. Or you could rob some banks. Whatev.

Temporal Acceleration works just fine. In fact, it makes the combo usable by an psionic character without any items, at around sixteeth level, I believe.

And, of course, it's not "banks" you want to rob. It's "dragons".

Well, if you manifested Temporal Acceleration for one round, let that round pass. Since font of power is 10 rounds, it doesn't matter if you spend one. You can reiterate it the next round.

however, if you kept temp accel on for years, you would wind up getting hungry, aging, etc. it's apparent time, meaning that you are still going to age. example: if a twin is kept on earth and the other twin is sent out on a near light speed ship out 5 years and back to earth 5 years. the twin on the ship experiences 10 years of apparent time, while the twin on earth experiences something like 60 years or sommat. It you speed up to experiencing years in temp accel, your going to age, have to eat, etc. also, at the end of the accel, you'll be stunned for however long you were in the accelerated state. meaning: in for 100 years, you get stunned for 100 years.

Because if it works, I think I'll be making an Elan Nomad

Way ahead of you.

And no, you're not stunned for 100 years. The beauty of Temporal Reiteration is that the round you're spending "doesn't count" for the effect's duration. So, after 100 years, you're still just shaken (not stunned, or so my XPH says) for just 1 round.

And in the meanwhile, you've been able to leisurely get your hands on every single "unattended object" you can get your hands on.

And given that you're a Nomad, you can get your hands on pretty much all of them.

Not if you dispel Font of Power. It's a Psi-Like ability, which means it can be dispelled. It's usable only once per day, and I'm not sure whether days are actually considered to pass when you're inside a Temporal Acceleration/Temporal Reiteration loop.

So does this combo make a -5 to manifesting class over 10 levels worth it in the long run? If not, can you do it without metamind?
InkBlot

It's not really worth it. If you can pull it off, then you can only ever pull it off once. After that either your DM will tell you to roll up a new character, or you will sit there being useless for the rest of the day.

It's a thought experiment really. A neat trick at best. It's not something anybody would, or should, do in an actual game.

Without the metamind, it might work if you use Link Power, have a humongous power point reserve, and a way to reduce the power's cost to very very little. Like Metapower (Linked Power), a periapt of power preservation, stone power, and some other things I don't know if even exist (maybe in incarnum?). And you'd probably have to be a gestalt psion/wilder with psionic talent for all your other feats. The idea is to manifest a chain of temporal reiterations linked to each other that will keep going long enough for you to rest to regain your power points (or use some other trick to generate your power points).

Let us consider this combo (assume use by a wilder11/anarchic initiate9):

Metapower (linked power) +torc of power preservation +earth power +full wild surge upto 6 +bestow power linked to temporal acceleration. If I did my math right all this took was 2 power points and an expended focus to manifest temporal acceleration which means I can fully augment bestow power to grant me 25 power points a pop. Metamorphosis into a creature immune to fear (using bonus EK feats of course) and you can do this all day.

I suppose one could assume that you were using the mathematical definition, which would make you the square root of a taoist...

I disagree, the metamind using this combo would be able to take out entire armies. The battle would start, and before the first volley of arrows would be fired, the Metamind would dissapear...then reappear somewhere else, drinking a bottle of Cianti, sitting on a throne, decked out in all the jewels of the enemy kingdom. The enemy army would be obliterated by multiple instances of 15d6 energy balls, the enemy wizard would be have a volley of arrows fly into their spine followed by a handful of energy balls, and anyone who remotely disliked the guy would be dead. The metamind would probably also have rifled through EVERY dungeon in the world during this time, and looted everything he could. Add this to a number of bags of holding, and practiced manifester, and he could have been throwing out 19d6 energy balls....hmmm...not so useless eh?

I'm pretty sure that any powers you manifest remain in your time frame, so any energy balls would wash harmlessly over the invading troops (since you can't affect them, being creatures, or their gear, being attended objects).

Something more insidious: The Metamind vanishes, along with 100' worth of ground underneath the invading army. The ground, being an unattended nonmagical object, can be altered by the Metamind, by multiple Disintegrates, perhaps. The pit will, of course, have spikes at the bottom, and if our Metamind is particularly industrious, there could be spiked balls suspended above the invaders' heads, rigged to drop when the soldiers land on pressure plates at the bottom of the pits. I'm not sure if it would be possible to rig the pits to flood with acid or lava as well. I'm not sure what happens to an object a character drops (thus turning it into an unattended object) during a Temporal Acceleration. My guess is that it would be transferred to the default timeframe.

what the hell are you talking about? it works like time stop. in other words, you throw fireball, fireball sticks in the air once it leaves your hand. you use dissipating touch, the result happens after you rejoin the time frame, sitting there. Powers don't go off during your time frame, they start, then join the normal time frame. Hell, a metamind doing this could write his name in the sky with energy balls.
InkBlot

10-10-07, 02:08 AM
Sagetim, nothing in temporal acceleration suggests that. In fact, the following passage in the power suggests that the opposite is true:
While your temporal acceleration is in effect, other creatures are invulnerable to your attacks and powers. This means you cannot target a creature with any attack or power. However, a power you manifest that affects an area and has a duration longer than the remaining duration of your temporal acceleration has its normal effect on creatures in the area once this power ends.

Your apparent time counts against the duration of powers you manifest while accelerated. That wouldn't be true if your powers weren't accelerated with you.

That's the whole point. That's what makes the class useless. You can't play a character who can singlehandedly conquer an entire planet in the blink of an eye. None of the other players (counting the DM) will let you, if they're actually interested in playing D&D.

You can take a second swift action as a move action. You can take a move action instead of a standard action. Thus, Schism could use Temporal Reeiteration eah round, so long as it can still manifest it at metamind ML -6.

No, you can't. Swift actions just don't work that way.

I've seen both sides debate the issue...

Schism says that the second mind may take one standard action, but does not say that it can't take a free/swift/immediate action.

The power also states "Each part functions in complete autonomy, like two characters in one body." Two autonomous characters would be able to take two swift actions per turn (one each).

One spell example would be the Slow spell. If someone is slowed, can they still take swift actions? The spell states that they are limited to a single "move" or "standard" action. Does this mean they loose their ability to take a swift action?

Ultimately it'll be up to the DM, but it could go either way...

Schism doesn't have to say what the second mind can't do. It only has to say what the second mind can do. If an activity falls outside that realm, the second mind can't do that.

One spell example would be the Slow spell. If someone is slowed, can they still take swift actions? The spell states that they are limited to a single "move" or "standard" action. Does this mean they loose their ability to take a swift action?

The Slow spell eliminates your ability to take full-round actions. It doesn't address free actions, swift actions, or five-foot steps, so it doesn't have any affect on your ability to perform those actions. Swift actions were a specific type of free action when the Slow spell was written, so those wouldn't be affected either.

Looking at the text of Slow I fear that Psyrus is correct. It limits the victim to 'a single move action or standard action each turn.' It is silent on free actions.

By your own logic the target is only permitted to perform actions he is explicitly entitled to perform by the text of the effect he is a target of. In this case that would be a single move or a single standard action. The text does not say he can perform any free actions of any type, therefore he cannot.

Not precisely. Both effects modify the way a character's turn normally functions, so they should be considered in the context of what normally occurs. Both Slow and Schism modify the number of actions normally alloted to a character. Schism only addresses the addition of a standard action, so we can be confident that it doesn't add any other actions, only that one standard action. Slow only addresses standard, move, and full-round actions. Since it is silent on free actions and five-foot steps (which are normally permitted), we are free to conclude that it does not modify them, and the unmodified rule states that such actions are permitted. However, I can see how a person could conclude that it would stop a person from taking free actions or five-foot steps.
InkBlot

10-12-07, 07:36 PM
It doesn't matter what slow does. Maybe slow does wipe out your free and swift actions. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe there's a loophole. I'm not going to go check because, no matter what it slow says, schism still doesn't say it gives you an extra swift action every round.
crizh

10-12-07, 09:05 PM
the unmodified rule states that such actions are permitted.

Each part functions in complete autonomy, like two characters in one body.

The default rule states that the second 'character' would be permitted the same spread of possible action as the original.

Your "second mind" does not control your body physically {does not get move actions- crizh} but is free to take one standard action in each round if the action is purely mental.

Modifies the 'default' rule to exclude move actions, full actions and standard actions that are not purely mental. No mention of free actions so no change to the default rule other than the 'purely mental' restriction due to the lack of control of the physical body.

Sorry I'm not at home and the battery is going flat.....

More later.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 used 2nd Ed rules. I don't know how Time Stop worked back then, because my only 2nd Ed character ever was a level 7 Ranger, whom I played for precisely one session which lasted roughly half an hour. It could easily have been different back then, or Baldur's Gate could've altered it.

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, as I understand, used a modified rule set. However, I don't know precisely how it was modified, because I've never played it. I've heard that the NwN Dragon Disciple is much cooler, or at least more powerful, than the tabletop one. Timestop could easily be different as well.

Actually, the RDD is somewhat weaker, at least in the casting department. They gain el zilcho in any spellcasting at all. They do get clerc bab, and some nice stat boosts though. So if your aim is to get dev crit at level 21, well, there's your class to do it with...sorcerer, rdd, fighter mix that is.

Feats: Practiced Manifester, Narrow Mind, Psionic Meditation, Overchannel, Talented, 1 floating feat your choice(2 if human).
Build finished: Level 15. ML 14(17 with Overchannel).

Begin your day. Yawn. Stretch. Manifest Schism. Use Font of Power.
Every round, spend swift action to manifest Temporal Reiteration.
Congratulations: You now, every round until you go to sleep, have a full round action(You) + a standard action(Schism). You can psionically refocus as a move action, manifest 2 powers per round(One overchanneled without any damage taken, if you burn your psionic focus) and still make a 5 foot move. You can(At ML 8) manifest a power and still take a run action. And, if you are woken up in the middle of the night, you still have only 7 pp less than your max to deal with whatever rudely awakened you. While the Wizard is trying to figure out what will do him more good in a fight, Comprehend Languages or Leomund's Tiny Hut, cause that's all he had left.

No longer sucks(ML 14), still for free, still once a day- except that it lasts all day. Still sucks from levels 6-14, but hey, that's to be expected for the quest to godlike power. Then from 16-20 take up those levels you missed in psion.
