Is a +2 to save DCs worth 4 feats? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys,

My latest incarnation of my favorite character is once again a psion, and I was thinking of taking the following feats:

Psionic Endowment
Greater Psionic Endowment
Narrow Mind
Permanent Focus (from Hyperconscious)

My goal is to obtain a permanent +2 to my save DCs.

In your opinions, is a +2 worth burning four entire feats?

Does Psionics have a Discipline focus (read spell focus) anywhere?

If so, Your 4 feats beats the 6 it would take to flesh all of that out. Would you not be better suited to be a wilder with heighten power (or equivalent)

I'm not a psionics expert, so I don't know if my thoughts are worth anything.

In my opinion, +2 for four feats is not bad, but not good. I wouldn't use it, or mock others for using it.

In my opinion, those feats would be better spent on gaining power points. Those power points could be allocated to augmentation (since it often increases power DCs and effects) or additional manifestations, as needed.

Thing is, that +2DC applies even if you max out pp spend.

You could do it in 3 in a pinch:
Endowment,
Gtr Endowment,
Psi-Meditation - after all, once combat starts you're unlikely to move about that much (and there's always exp know(hustle))

Oh, and slightly limiting, but a psionatrix might help in some cases.
(Am I right in thinking they only affect discipline specific powers, as opposed to the psion being of that discipline?)

A Psionatrix affects all powers of a particular discipline, whether they're on the discipline list or not. In other words, a Psionatrix of Telepathy will work equally well on both Psionic Charm and Psychic Crush.

Personally, I'm not absolutely sure that +2 DC is worth two feats...

Better is to take greater psionic weapon and deep impact with continual focus...

further, if we remember that rays count as ranged weapons, then we may be on to a build.

yes, kineticist with focus on fire, privileged energy, psionic shot and greater psionic shot with continual focus twice...

You also have Overchannel available. Until you hit 8th level, that's +1 to DCs every odd level; after 8th but before 15th, that's +1 to DCs every even level.

Taking Talented means that you take no damage from this.

The question to ask yourself is: Are there powers without DC augmentation that I just can't do without? If the answer is Yes, then you need Greater Psionic Endowment and whatever boosts you can manage to your manifesting stat. But at the levels where you can pull this off, and where mounting opponent CR is cutting away at the effect of favored powers, getting focused really isn't that big a problem. I would just use GPE and then refocus; it you used the right power then the subject should not be shooting back as you are doing this.

Your other option is to use powers that reduce your opponent's saving throws. For example, Mind Seed does not have a DC augmentation (though at 8th level the DC is damned high) and costs 3KXP if the subject makes the save. Good candidate for Greater Psionic Endowment, but a better plan would be to open with Mindwipe. It does have a DC augment (or you can augment for more negative levels). Sure, it is mind-affecting, but if the subject is immune to such than the Mind Seed would not have worked so you might as well find this out without spending XP. Negative levels drop all the subject's saves as well as ML and higher level powers (which means he has fewer options to mount a defense). Note that Mindwipe does not use negative energy so the 4th level Negative Plane Protection and unpteen items that ward against death effects and negative energy won't block it.

I thought Permanent Focus only applied to things which require you to maintain focus, not things that require you to expend focus. Maybe I'm misremembering it. I don't actually own the book. Could somebody else double check?

Narrow Mind isn't the most wonderful way to boost concentration checks. If I wanted a high Concentration check I'd rather take Psicrystal Affinity and get a psicrystal with the Single Minded personality. That gives you a +3 to Concentration checks, and a little construct buddy too.

However, I'd rather take Psionic Meditation instead. Even automatically succeeding on your Concentration check isn't worth it if you have to blow a whole round of actions every time. Being able to get focused as a move action is just better. When you succeed on the check, then you can apply a meta feat to your powers every turn instead of every other turn. If don't succeed on the check, then you can try again with your second move action.

In short, I'd rather take Psionic Meditation and three metapsi feats.

There is no psionic feat equivalent to Spell Focus, and there is no metapsionic feat equivalent to Heighten Spell. Some powers have augmentable save DCs, which is similar to what Heighten Spell does, but not all of them, and Wilder is a very different beast than Psion. The differences between Wilder and Psion are much much larger than the differences between Sorcerer and Wizard.

You're right. It's useful for stuff like Ghost Attack, Persistent Power or Speed of Thought, not [Gr.] Psionic Endowment.

I second Overchannel as the most efficient option. Were I to choose to optimize DC with 4 feats, I would probably opt for a scalable DC power and Midnight Augmentation + Useful Soulmeld+ Bonus Essentia+ Overchannel. 4 feats for 5 points of augmentation (lvl 9) if you expend your psionic focus, 5 points which also boost the effect of the power. You also get a useful effect from the soulmeld. I'd then grab psionic meditation.
