I asked this in the wrong place just before.

Anyway. I mean, you can get the +4 manifester level feat... Sooo...

You could have a manifester level of 20 and a spellcaster level of 14, correct? Is that worth considering, at all? I'm just trying to look at what options there is.

Also, is thrallherd worth bothering with? Or would the best idea be to simply stay a Psion all the way. I don't really know.

I'm a Shaper.

Cerebremancer builds can be a lot of fun, and depending on which books are allowed, there are cheesy ways to access it which entails loosing fewer CL/ML. I'm an SRD guy though, so I'm not sure on the particulars.

You can pull off some cool tricks with Cerebremancer. Look at the spell Mental Pinnacle in the XPH for instance. Imagine what that boost in PP would do for someone who actually had decent powers to manifest.

Personally, Cerebremancer is my #1 choice for cohorts to psionic characters. I love their versatility and the services they can provide - in particular out of combat. More on this if you're interested. Unless you use some cheese to lessen the ML loss though, I'd say straight Shaper is far more powerful for a PC class.

Thrallherd is a potent PrC if you like recurring allies. If you'd keep them relatively safe anyway and just use them for utility, flavor and fun, go with the Leadership feat instead.

The only books allowed by my DM are official ones.

So all I have is whats on the official table, bar powers of course. He's allowing research of my own stuff, but his main rule is no mirroring things from within psionics or in other books. Well, thats power stuff.

He said that followers, cohorts and stuff like that are DM's choice for what they are. I'm definately after flavour and fun though. As I've said, I'm an Elan Shaper. My DM allowed me to be venerable, so I have a very high INT stat of 21. I know he's going to pull stuff on me later as he already has xD

I'm probably tremendously stupid with what I've chosen as starting powers >.>

Edit: And err... Any help in fixing the flavour power I posted at http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=861622 would be appreciated too xD

Astral Construct
Vigor
Soothing Touch (My own little creation of touching healy goodness)

My feats are Overchannel, Talented, and because we were allowed one feat out of flaws, Psicrystal Affinity.

My stats, if I recall correctly, are:

STR: 6
DEX: 10
CON: 9
INT: 21
WIS: 17
CHA: 15

I'm probably mad beyond belief.

My psicrystal gives +2 to will. Probably more madness.

We've already started. I err... Tried to plan ahead till my DM said theres such a thing as planning TOO far ahead xD So I stopped planning.

Thats why I've been trying to get involved here in the boards. I've been trying to learn all I can about Psionics, including how others use some of the powers for flavour and the like.

Thus, any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Ooooooh. And Hovnarr. I love the idea of Psiland. Absolutely love it. It's one of the reasons I've gone Shaper. Being able to create things like that, absolutely brilliant.

We were going to create a Psionic Airship when we get to those late levels, well... If we get there xD The genesis plane would be our base, and we would be sky pirates. My mate is a spinoff of Jack Sparrow. So he's going to be captain, and I'm going to be the builder. The architect I suppose.

Yeah. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Nows probably a good time to say I've been wanting to play a Psion for over a year >.> When I first played, my DM (The same one as I have now) said I should play a basic class to start out. So I played a female ranger. When I got to level 5, he let me go psionics, and I grabbed Soul Knife (Big fan of Starcraft. >.> Soul Knives are like the Protoss Zealots see xD) But he got creeped out by me playing a female xD So, that character went quickly >.> Same campaign, about 4 months later I talked my way back in as a Dragonfire Adept. By then, the guy who's now playing the Jack spinoff, had his own kingdom which kinda... Halted the campaigns movement. So we restarted. This time however, he's let me have a shot at Psionics. From the beginning as you will have gathered. >.>

Love the PrC!

Only need to boost one stat (Int)

Psiotheurge Feat allows you to stack your arcane casting class with your psionic!

Ascetic Sarlona feat ... stack your Psion and Cerebremancer levels onto Monk!

And mega versatility (not that psions were hurting there before).

There's some debate over whether the Precocious Adept feat would let you get in with just 1 level of Wizard. But anyway ... W 1/M 1/Psi 3/CM 10. At lvl 15, you function as a Wiz/Psi 11/13 (24), and kind of like a lvl 14 Monk :)

I'm going to toss my hat in with the guys above me and say that, yes, cerebremancer is a fine prestige class to shoot for, especially if you aren't the party's primary spellcaster or manifester. The lost spell and power levels will hurt your effectiveness as a primary a lot, especially as you start getting up in levels. However, what you'll lack in raw power, you'll more than make up for in versatility. My recommendation would be to learn as many buff spells as you can. Bull's strength, bear's endurance, and the like are exceedingly useful to your party.

Get both a psicrystal and a familiar. My personal favorite familiar is the weasel. That +2 to Reflex saves can save your life and, in a tight spot, the weasel's bite does Con damage. (Normally, you don't want to send your familiar into danger, but sometimes things get desperate.)

If you play him smart and don't overcheese him, you'll have a ton of fun!

athas.org (the official producer of 3.5 Darksun material) has some interesting things you can do with the cerbralmancer PrC in later levels. They are epic, but you could have some fun, depending on your alignment. Check them out here (http://www.athas.org/releases/advancedbeings/dragon-r3.pdf) and here. Oooh, you read the post about Psiland! Well, that contains the gist of my ideas for the cerebremancer cohort, but I'm presently expanding on the concept a great deal. I find myself at the other side of the table, and I'm creating it as a much much more extensive home base for my players to use, explore and enjoy. So far I have a leadership feat hierarchy with the epic creator of the plane in the top, his 17th level cerebremancer next and all the way down to a level 5 cohort at the bottom. Some 350 followers take care of the daily needs of the demiplane.

In summary, the most important important things a cerebremancer cohort can do for you is:
*a databank of circumstantial powers: have him learn all the powers that are nifty but not needed every day like psionic identify and contingency. He can manifest them himself, or you can manifest them through his powers known.
*a recharge battery: the combo here is the mental pinnacle spell and bestow power.
*caring for your astral seed: even a lich is jealous of you, since you have a personal body guard just for your "phylactery".
*guarding your other followers: a cerebremancer is a pretty powerful guadian in case your demiplane should be invaded.
*a supply of useful effects: have him take all nifty things you can think of. When in a bind, just planeshift or teleport to him and let him fix you right up.

Now imagine what happens when the cerebremancer takes leadership too and gets a wizard cohort who gets a cleric cohort who...

The only real flaw is if the DM won't let you choose everything for your cohorts and followers. Mines not allowing us to. But damn I love the idea O.o A home base which never stops moving, an airship which can phase between the material plane and your base, and a way to build it all.

Oh yeah. What if the DM has your followers betray you? >.> I mean, it's not like they're controlled by you.

But yeah. Cerebremancer sounds like fun. But won't the loss of the bonus feats hurt? >.>

I'm not really after absolute power, but more something flavourable. I love the Psion already because I can see the powers to come can be used imaginatively depending on situtations ^^ Thats the only kinda cheese I want really. Cheese of the imagination :D

And err... Rakmakallan, I'm a shaper xD Already started the game, but still looking for options to spice up our experience.

I should also mention the other person we're playing with, is a Sorc.

Why would you want to become a Cerebremancer if you are a Shaper? You could try Ectopic Adept(CoP) and get Astral construct:Anathemic carapace. It's really good if your oponent lacks some kind of fire resistance. Conjure some 9 level of them and let them detonate for 20d6 damage each. Far better than Fireballs. Not to mention that cerebremancers naver get access to the strongest spells and powers from either class.

I should also mention the other person we're playing with, is a Sorc.

Then let him become Wilder then Cerebremancer, perhaps followed by some Anarchic Initiate levels.

Well could you guys give me some other options of possible PrC's (I'm keeping basic shaper in mind as well, but I want options), what they are, what they do, and where I can find them? Remember my restrictions though.

Official Books only, and the SRD of course. No 3rd party, and no Dragon Magazine. I'm new to D&D in general, having only made two low level characters before, and I'm really keep on Psionics. REALLY keen. I'm loving the flavour it gives, and the ideas for characters it allows for. Magic just seems so overly... Broken to me. I was considering Cerebremancer to get the best of both worlds, but I wasn't sure, hence why I asked. Turns out, maybe its a bad idea for a main. So... What is there? Incarnum looks kinda.... Weird. I don't understand essentia at all >.> So I've been avoiding that book, even though I have it.

Did you see my last post?
Anyway, most psionic prcs are not worth it as they have many levels that your manifester level does not increase. The strength of the shaper is his Astral Construct, so if you favor quantity(many constructs) you could try metamind, as it greatly increases your power points. If you have access to Complete Psionic go into Ectopic Adept as soon as you meet the prerequisites and remember to take some relevant feats(shape astral construct). You could also talk your DM into allowing a homebrew-custom prc that significantly increases the shaper's power(for example 10 levels of full manifesting with astral construct augmentations to deal elemental damage etc.)
Fafnir

06-09-07, 05:43 AM
Or you could try the Constructor (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625b), therefore avoiding the CPsi like the plague, for the sake of your sanity.

I've actually read some of the Cpsi powers. I actually understand some of them o.o Even Illithid Blast I understand. The whole "You may invest power points" thing is a screw up. Its obvious its based on the warlocks blast ability. BUT! It's also based on the Illithid Mind Flayers original Mind Thrust attack. The "You may invest power points" thing is just bollocks. I mean, they didn't add a flaming list on how many power points, so obviously it was a typo. In my opinion, ignore that part, and act as if it were an illithid Mind Thrust version of the Eldrich blast.

And yes I read your post. Otherwise, I wouldn't reply to it. Honestly.

Don't go metamind. Ever. You gain more power points going full psion, even at PrC level 10.

You don't ever want to multiclass wilder with something that doesn't increase wild surge. It's a huge mistake. Wilder/cerebremancer is a terrible idea. Really, the best class combo for an aspiring cerebremancer is psion*/wizard. Cerebremancers are all about versatility and you want to maximize that versatility as much as possible.

Shaper's a good discipline to go cerebremancer with. You can use your powers for battlefield control, defense, and constructs and you can use spells for utility and blasting. If you don't want to go cerebremancer, then the constructor is absolutely the best prestige class for a shaper. I'm going to make a non-suck version of the ectopic adept one of these days, but, until that day comes, you're better off avoiding it like the plague.

Oh, and by the way, Anathemic Carapace sucks. Instead of spending two feats on a scary-looking beetle that goes boom, spend one feat on Expanded Knowledge (energy ball) and you've got a far more versatile, easier to use power.

*Erudite is also good, if your DM allows it.

If you are considering Cerebremancer for its versatility, then also give the Psychic Theurge a look. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040925b

The dip into cleric does not weaken you the way a 3 level dip into wizard does. In fact, the 3 levels of D8 hit points, armor and shield proficiency, two domain special abilities (pick 'em well), medium BAB, and two good saves, greatly increases your survivability. Because of the lack of arcane spell failure for both manifester and divine casters, cleric and psion complement each other better than do arcane + psionic mixes.
Tyroki

06-09-07, 07:45 PM
Psychic Theurge you say? Hmm... But don't clerics work on Charisma?

Though it does definately sound interesting.

Are Constructors an official class, or third party? I don't know if Minds Eye is considered official or not. If it is, I can hit my DM with that ^^

Theurge eh? Hmmm. Thanks everyone ^^
Nite_shade

06-09-07, 08:30 PM
The Constructor is published by WotC, that's about as official as it gets I'd say.

For Psychic Theurge you could actually use Archivist as the divine base class which uses Int as its key score, but you lose the Cleric's proficiencies, hit dice, etc. Tons of flavor though.

Also, I know your current DM doesn't allow Dragon magazine, but if you ever revisit this character in the future, I'd consider Dragon #313 for the Mind Mage class. By level 10 you can substitute power points for verbal, somatic, and material components; can pay for metamagic with power points and metapsionics with spell slots; deliver touch spells with concussion blast; gain +10 ML and CL on top of your combined levels; and other goodies. Not too bad for 8/10 spell and power progression.
Tyroki

06-09-07, 09:34 PM
Well, there we have it. He won't allow anything outside of the official books. So, that means nothing from Minds Eye. Guess I'm forced to stay a basic shaper. Unless something in Incarnum is worth using >.> But I only have 9 constitution. Or... Something from Complete Psionics?

Oh yeah. What if the DM has your followers betray you? >.> I mean, it's not like they're controlled by you.

You can always use Psychic Reformation to sculpt a cohort more precisely, but yeah, Leadership management is heavily dependent on your DM. Here's how I run it myself:

DESIGN
*Player gets to design his cohort much like if he was drafting a new PC, but using NPC wealth and elite array for attributes. The player must make a completely detailed sheet, to be approved as normal. The cohort's design must fit the campaign and the PC's purposes.
*Followers must be NPC classes. The player can make general statements about class, race and equipment (for instance: "all level 1 followers are commoners specialized in a craft or profession skill, 80% are human and they are lightly armed and armored"). Details are determined by the DM, if at all necessary.

CONTROL
*The PCs typically has as much control over his cohort as he would over a charmed target. The cohort may or may not be willing to give his life for the PC - it depends on the specifics. A cleric with a paladin cohort could enjoy such loyalty, but a wizard with an "apprentice" cohort probably wouldn't. A cohort provides services free of charge, much like a fellow party member.
*Followers are very friendly around the PC, but he can't control them directly. They provide services at cost, and try their outmost to reach reasonable agreements with the PC. They cooperate with the PCs interests if terms are reasonable - for example, warriors could man and maintain a fortress that the PC provides, if he has some means to feed them and keep them happy there (perhaps other followers could grow crops and hunt on his lands, etc.).

OTHERS
*Cohorts can take the leadership feat too, but the PC has no control over the cohort's cohort. He can use the leadership ladder as a chain of command of course, but if orders are too unreasonable for any cohort in the chain, it will fail. In general, cohorts and followers in the same chain get along nicely as long as they are treated well, but their loyalty is not absolute and they could be bribed by outside forces.

I'm a Shaper.

The giant advantage the Cerebramancer has over, say, the mystic theurge, is his casting stat synergy. Psion and Wizard both use intelligence as primary casting stat so your bonus spells and bonus PP's are coming from the same place!

Consider W 5/ Psion 5/ Cerebramancer 10
has CL 15 in each class granting him 8th level spells and powers. Taking Practiced manifester and practiced caster can get your CL and ML up to 19. This gives great flexibility of PP usage for offensive powers and delightful scaling of your wizard spells.

Alternatively, W 7/Psi 3/ Cereb 10 can net 9th level spells, take practiced manifester 2x to get ML 20 with CL 17, and you'll have an extremely versative caster from the 9th lvl spells combined with 7th level psion powers augmentable up to 20 pp (that should give you all the best offensive powers!).

Cerebramancer makes a dandy SECONDARY caster for a party. His delayed and limited access to higher level spells and powers is in contrast to his flexibility. He is at his best when he can fill in the "holes" of a party's primary caster and provide support.

As far as the thrallherd goes, if you're into charming or dominating to create allies it is really tough to beat the class abilities of the thrallherd. You get 8/10 manifesting which will net you 9th level powers and copious PP's, but even better, your thralls don't need to be charmed to follow your bidding! If I went the charming route, I would definetly play a thrallherd.

If you like the shaper, you pretty much have to take ectopic adept. Its damn near irresponsible not to :)

No, it is not worth it unless:

1. You start at high levels; or
2. Your DM allows you to use means of entry (ie Precocious Apprentice) that violate the "spirit" of the rules; or
3. You use Dragon Magazine feats.

The Cerebremancer:

1. Kills you at the mid-levels (which is where many, many games are focused), when you have access to lower level powers than a full caster (up to two levels behind...at 6th level you're stuck at 2nd level spells powers, while others have 4th level spells/powers);
2. Leaves you well behind on feats over a straight caster;
3. Has zero feat synergy;
4. Is a useless Epic PrC (only advances one every two levels, as per MT).

Some builds gain a lot from this prestige class. If you choose ardent as your psionic component, your power selection isn't as limited as normal since ardents pick your powers based on your manifester level, not your effective ardent level. This makes practiced manifester very valuable.

I'm playing a Beguiler/Ardent right now with two levels of monk. At 9th level I took the Tashlatora(spelling?) feat which lets my monk levels and levels in a psionic class stack for the progression of some of the monk abilities. I also took practiced manifester and practiced spellcaster. This means I have the abilities of a level 12 monk, spells of a level 12 beguiler (level 16 caster) and powers of a level 12 ardent. And since ardents choose powers based on their manifester level, I can still access the higher level powers.

So far he's been one of the most useful characters in the party, able to deal with literally any situation. (Ranged combat? Disintigrate... Melee combat? Morph into a troll and beat things up with the monk abilities. Social situation? Beguiler spells... noncombat encounter? Beguiler spells and skills.)

Its a bit useless yes. It is better than a Mysric Theurge though if you're a Psion/Wizard as you only need a high intelligence. I would still only play one in a high level game. I would take practiced spellcaster of manifester as you're going to have less PPs to augment your powrs with and spells scale for free.

This is a good point...Psychic Theurge is worth it if you play an Ardent, as you can take 19 levels in a Divine casting class (20 ML, 9th level powers) and 11 levels in Ardent (15th ML, 8th level powers). You can get 9th in both if you are allowed to take Prac. Manifester multiple times (which is not RAW).

Still not worth it in Epic, though.

Ah, but that's a fault of the arcane side, not the psionic side. Taking a PrC should not be a no-brainer, but an option if you have a specific build type in mind. The best psion is probably psion 20, which is as it should be. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for wizards or sorcerors.

Well actually... I'm going to agree with the straight psion being fun ^^ That sorc from the campaign I'm in started up a small side campaign where myself and a mate from a forum joined up. The mates a sorc, I'm a psion, and since seeing my Psion in action, he wishes he'd seen them before the sorc xD I grabbed Telekinetic Thrust and Time Hop as my level 3 choices. I couldn't help it! XD I had to! I've been wanting to use them both for ages xD The sorc from the main campaign was the DM, and after I did something with TK Thrust, he just went silent for a while xD (He had a kobold spellcaster use Mirror Image to screw us over xD) If I'm correct, images don't weigh anything =3 And as the spellcaster was all that was left, I threw him and his images into the roof xD Well, I can easily say that we found out which one was the real kobold xD Hehehe. And there was a big door to get to him. Twas electrified. With a click of my characters fingers, bye bye door xD I now officially love Time Hop xD >.> ... <.< So yeah, I'm happy with Psion xD <3 <3 He's going to allow Psychic Reformation to do away with PrC's as well so I can test the constructor. Which is useful ^^

You could always take the practiced manifester AND the practiced spellcaster feats - just depends on how important manifester/caster levels are.

Admittedly, Manifester would be first choice, due to how it's augments operate.

Just have a plan for how the character is going to function and how you will use your powers and spells before considering the hybrid PrCs. If you take one just to be taking it then you will likely gimp yourself in the long run.

For example, if you go Shaper/Cleric Psychic Theurge then your best plan is to specialize in astral construct + divine buffs and protections. If your DM is not using the Comp Psi nerf then multiple constructs + clerical mass buffs could be your best bet. You will only need enough Wis to access clerical spells of whatever level you eventually hope to have access to. DC of your clerical spells will be largely irrelevant because you won't be using them against unwilling targets. Just be aware that divine buffs that are necromantic or that work via morale boosting won't work on astral constructs.

If you go Psion/Mage Cerebremancer then you still need a plan. Figure out whether your primary offense is going to be psionic or arcane then figure out how the other side can be used to enhance your primary. A Kineticist/Sorc, for example, could depend on psionics for his blasting and use sorcery for defense and utility (Wings of Cover takes the place of a boatload of other defenses). Alternately, he could look to psionics for defense and utility (Damp Power, Time Hop, other workhorse powers), and stick with Chain Lightning and Horrid Wilting from the arcane side for offense. Only loosing choice would be to load up on a mishmash of effects from both sides with neither plan nor synergy.

If you're going to go do a doubly, the best thing to do is to pick which side is going to be weaker, and then specifically pick powers that do not have Spell Resistance and do not have a Duration. This makes up for your crap Caster/Manifester Level, and it means no one will be Dispelling your weak buffs.

For Example:

Arcane: Teleport, Dimension Door, Orb spells
Divine: Healing
Psionics: Damp Power, Intellect Fortress, Crystal Shard

Ardent 1/Cleric 3/Psychic Theurge 6/Church Inquisitor 10.

Cerebremancer wouldn't be worth it if you had to lose much CL/ML but the fun really begins when you come to psionics from magic, not to magic from psionics. Because as a magician you would know the book the Complete Arcane, which on page 181 has the feat 'Precocious Apprentice'. Which gives you the ability to cast 2nd level spells at first level. So the level advancement looks a little like this: Feats
1rst level: Wiz 1 Precocious Apprentice
2nd level: Psi 1/Wiz 1
3rd level: Psion 2/Wiz 1
4th level: Psi 3/ Wiz 1
5th level: Psi 3/ Wiz 1/ Cerebremancer 1

Look at that you are now progressing in wizard levels and manifesting at mere one level below every other psion. Sure at level 15 your really level 14 manifester and casting at level 12. Which isn't as good as just taking psion levels but in exchange for a mere one level you get to be a wizard too. Which is why when I play a cerebremancer I lie to people and tell them I am a just an Erudite, and then the fireball really surprises people.

This Class sucks at low levels but will likely shine between level 10-16 and then suck again. At least it only has 1 abiltiy score requirement if you're a Wizard/Psion unlike the Mystic Theurge.
