| JulesCARV11-02-07, 04:18 AM | I was thinking of memories I had of seeing a rather ****ed up movie called The Cell, which basically involves the protagonist going inside the fantasy world of an insane serial killer in a coma. I'm wondering -- if you put someone in a microcosm, could you get into their microcosm reality in any way? Would manifesting dream travel do it, perhaps? |
| Lycanthromancer11-02-07, 01:22 PM | You could always manifest it on yourself, as well. Not really a good thing. Although I suppose you could always manifest it again on yourself in order to get out of it. |

(B)I'm wondering -- if you put someone in a microcosm, could you get into their microcosm reality in any way? Would manifesting dream travel do it, perhaps? (A) If I ever went "inside the fantasy world of" Jennifer Lopez, I would be "in a coma". She could call me her personal "insane serial killer", so long as she wore that outfit. Oh, bad Awaken_D_M_golem. (B) "Otherwise, only very potent powers (such as psychic chirurgery or reality revision) or similar effects (such as miracle or wish) can undo the mental crosswiring that this power brings about." Entering into a Microcosm, should cost less Magic than completely undo-ing it. Why not. Isn't there a Plane of Mind? Or Mindscapes deluxe? A non-deity having control of a self generated plane, should get whatever the god stats say, about their abode, but with more randomness, due to less ability to control it all. |

If you put yourself in a microcosm, and then try to manifest microcosm again to let yourself out, then you will dream that you let yourself out, but you'll actually still be in the microcosm. The only way to get out of a microcosm is with the help of somebody outside of your microcosm. I would allow dream travel to enable people to visit a microcosm. Perhaps not safely (the microcosm could tempt them to stay, or try to twist their minds to fit into the context of the false reality). But that's just a houserule. RAW, in order to join other people in a microcosm, you have to be hit with the power at the same time they are. Microcosm describes the target as having his senses turned inwards. I think you could use sense link to view a microcosm through the victim's eyes. You may be able to use telepathic powers, such as mind link, to communicate with the victim. It depends on whether or not telepathic reception falls under the category of senses (sixth sense?). A good compromise may be to allow mind link to send messages to the victim, but not enable the victim to reply. Also, these messages may be interpreted by the victim's mind in ways that fit within the context of his internal world. If you've read Ubik, then you know what I'm getting at. If you haven't read Ubik, then for the love of Phillip K. Dick get to your library and read it! |
| AntiDjinn11-03-07, 12:39 AM | Do you have a way to prove that you are not already in your own (or someone else's) Microcosm? All your interactions with beings, objects, and effects outside of yourself could merely be perceptions generated by your internal microverse. Or we could all be in J-Lo's brain. It would explain a lot. |

Amazing book... I feel like I'm getting Microcosm-ed every time I re-read it ! It's so amazingly frustrating - in a good way. |

Sense Link or the forced version should work, but you might have to use the forced version twice. False Sensory Input will allow you to change the world that they perceive. |

The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, also by PKD, deals with perceptive reality as well. One character even imagines a stairway into being that takes him from a micro-reality back to his own office, only to find that his "normal" reality is also contained by Eldritch's perceptive trap. Once you have been microcosmed, everything, including escape from the microcosm, could be part of the microcosm. |
| Lycanthromancer11-03-07, 05:27 PM | I suppose you could always use the Unconditional Power feat to get you out. And there's always the psychic reformation power available to get it. |
| JoshuaZ11-03-07, 10:02 PM | I suppose you could always use the Unconditional Power feat to get you out. And there's always the psychic reformation power available to get it. : But it isn't at all clear once you've been microcosmed that you use those powers in real life. It might just seem to you like you've used them. |
