is this to much damage for 1 pp? [Archive] - Wizards Community

i got a friend in a campaign who is a wilder and has the psionic shot feat and the feat that lets you gain focus as a move action. he says he can use them together on a ray, so for 1pp 1d6(base)+1d6(surge)+2d6(psionic shot)=4d6 every round at level 3. later when he gets BAB+5 he is going to get imp psionic shot and a torc of power preservation to up the ante even more. i know this takes a move action along with a concentration check + 5% failure rate for surge but it seems really high to me for just 1pp.

is this right? and if it is is the damage all considered to be the energy type of the ray. im thinking yes and yes. btw this character is close to making psionics baned for PC's in my Dm's campaign because he is frustrated.

Well, I see one big problem.

Psionic Meditation - the feat that allows regaining focus as a move action - has a requirement of Concentration 7 ranks. It is impossible for a 3rd level character to meet that prerequisite, as max ranks is Level +3 - 3rd level can only have 6 ranks.

So that combo isn't possible until 6th level, at which point, there are other good combos :)

All that aside, you have a wilder who has invested 3 feats (point blank shot is a prereq for psionic shot, psionic shot, and psionic meditation, I assume a human to have that bonus feat?), and uses all his actions in a round to do 4d6 points of damage as a touch attack, meaning if he misses, it's worthless, and his BAB is +2.

I could think of some equally damaging combos - but again, this combo is not legitimate at 3rd level due to the prereqs.

Well, with point blank shot and a decent dex score, his to-hit roll should be +5 or +6. He should be able to hit a fair amount of the time, considering that it is only a ranged touch attack.

I know cityscape has this guild benefit which raises your max skill cap to 4+HD, but I am not sure if one can qualify for it that early in the game.

On a side note, you might want to consider the wilder variants (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20070214a) here. I see no reason why one would not take the educated wilder variant.:)

It makes up for the fact that he's playing a wilder, and will begin to suck in proportion to how many wilder levels he takes past level 3-4. You also left out that he could wild surge for two power points at level 3, for 6d6 damage. Even without psionic mediation, he could do this once per combat, which is still fairly potent.

But really, this is a "trick" that is good for the lower levels only. By the time you can even afford Greater Psionic Shot, it isn't really worth a feat. And normal Psionic Shot isn't too impressive later, and if you play till then you'll be wondering why you spent a feat on it, also (and why you didn't play a Psion...).

Is 4d6 damage too much for 1pp?

Well, the arcane guys get something similar for first level spells, so if that is counted in probably not.

But this isnt really 4d6 damage for 1pp, it is 4d6 damage for 1pp+wildsurge (which has a virtual cost)+2 feats+psionic focus.

And that is just to do it basically once per battle!

Power point conservation is an art, and it is best to start early. It looks like he is on the right track at least! I really like the ray+psionic shot chain for pp conservation though. At some point empower will overtake it though which I find kindof sad :(

btw this character is close to making psionics baned for PC's in my Dm's campaign because he is frustrated. It sounds like this player can make any character class frustrate the DM. Ask the DM not to take it out on psionics, because it won't solve the problem.

Somehow I missed this, bah ;/

What is this character doing that might make psionics banned? This bit about doing some decent damage with a ray cannot be it, especially once they figure out that it is a once per battle ability.

A character with a decent strength and a two handed sword has been doing about as much damage from level one and can do it way more times per day, he is just limited by range. But then rays do not travel very far so it is not a huge difference. A guy with a bow and rapid shot has a whole lot more range but a lot less damage per hit. He can go most or all of the day though as arrows are cheap and light.

The character must be doing something else as well. Wilder at this point only has 2 powers known though so I guess this must be the only problem.

I am confused!

I am confused!I'm not. Some DMs seem to want to ban anything that is remotely effective. Oh noes, the Wilder is doing damage!
