Here in Argentina, it is already Tuesday...
Does someone know a tentative date for this month's article?

They usually go up mid-month, so Thursday or Friday is most likely.

Then someone else manifested true metabolism on it...

So what is this one about?

06-16-07, 08:26 PM
IIRC, this month's Mind's Eye was either supposed to have some new monsters, or more expanded classes. Personaly, I can't wait for more expanded classes.

06-16-07, 09:38 PM
I think it's going to be about Expanded Classes, possibly all for the Erudite, but I'm not sure on that one.

06-16-07, 11:15 PM
Last Month, Mark said that "June's Mind's Eye will be Expanded Classes, Part 4: Ardent, Divine Mind, Lurk, and Erudite".

Unless that has changed from his last post in the May.

I'm waiting for something saying 'Ignore the nerfing of the astral construct, we screwed that up big time.'
it has been my experience that they will never actually admit they were wrong, no matter how stupid the ruling, how public the mistake, and how common the houserule.

they will just provide alternate rules, and pretend like the alternate rules are not there to fix the problem that they created in the first place.

as an example of something they might have considered, they could have allowed shapers (and only shapers) to have more than one astral construct at a time, or they might introduce an item that allows more at a time, or a skill trick, etc. they are not likely to ever admit that they should never have made the nerf in the first place. well, maybe in 4th edition. but not before then, imo.
Tyroki

06-17-07, 08:50 PM
Or maybe you could just ignore that blip in the Complete Psionics book... It's a stupid errata.

So... There are more Mind's Eyes eh? Whats the link again? XD

If we're really lucky, they might say something like "If you're using this rule, you should also limit summoning spellcasters to one creature."
turalisj

06-17-07, 10:01 PM
But that would nerf spellcasters, something they avoid.
Jaid

06-17-07, 10:22 PM
If we're really lucky, they might say something like "If you're using this rule, you should also limit summoning spellcasters to one creature."actually, they didn't limit psions to 1 summon, just to 1 astral construct. they can still have an ectoplasmic shambler, 5 larval flayers, and however many other things they can summon. they just can't have that many astral constructs. that is, assuming anyone, anywhere actually uses the rule the way it is written.

(i suspect that anyone who does use the rule at all interprets it as only one summon affect, period, and applies the same ruling to magic... but you never know)
Tyroki

06-18-07, 03:03 AM
Yeah but who wants to nerf their precious spellcasters? =3

Just out of curiosity, what is it about that article that's kept it tied up in editing for two months? Did you submit it to them in Navajo? Was it formatted in .000000000000000000001 font, and they've been waiting on the electron microscope delivery? Did you send it to them electronically, or did you just staple the article to a hobo and hope he'd find his way to the editor before he bled out?

Seriously, though; what's the deal? Is it that earth-shaking an article, or is it something else? I'm really curious.

you are right though, that barely accounts for 1/3 of the Suck.

Here's a preview!
Hoover Maneuver
Psychokinesis [air]
Level: Psion/wilder 3
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Display: Auditory
Range: 20 ft.
Area: 20 ft. cone
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Power Resistance: No
Duration: 1 round

You psychokinetically push or pull air away or towards you, creating a powerful gust of wind (approximately 50 mph), affecting all creatures in its path. You choose whether this power sucks or blows when you manifest it.

You can do anything that a sudden blast of wind would be expected to do. It can create a stinging spray of sand or dust, fan a large fire, overturn delicate awnings or hangings, heel over a small boat, and blow gases or vapors to the edge of its range. See page 95 of the Dungeon Master's Guide for details. The Fort save DC to negate the wind effects is replaced by the DC of this power.

Augment: For every 2 additional power points you spend, the duration of this power increases by 1 round and the saving throw DC increases by 1. Each round, you can turn to suck or blow in a new area.

You clearly haven't paid attention to the front page this month. Have you not seen the three weeks of Sage questions dedicated to psionics and the first in a series of Class Chronicles articles dealing with psionic races and classes? These, plus the upcoming Mind's Eye article make this practically the Summer of Psionics on the site.

It's worth noting, too, that the Class Chronicles series took us completely by surprise. I don't recall it having been mentioned by anyone on this board prior to its posting. Clearly, someone cares. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Races of the Mind and Complete Mentalist

Class Chronicles: Psionic Races and Classes (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070620)

Took me a little while to find it, and I haven't read it yet. I don't play, read, or generally want anything to do with Forgotten Realms. I would have never found it if you hadn't pointed it out.

edit: Wow, this feat from Class Chronicles seems so overpowered -
Scion of the Twelve [Regional, Psionic]

Your body and mind hold the essence of one of the twelve scions of Jhaamdath, allowing you to recognize the presence of your kind.

Benefits:

* You can use detect psionics at will as a psi-like ability. Your manifester level is equal to your character level.
* You gain a +2 bonus to your effective manifester level when manifesting powers from the clairsentience discipline.

You may select this feat only as a 1st-level character. You may have only one regional feat.

The sage has yet to answer a question that needs answering, so I don't count it. As soon as they answer our questions on psicrystals, then I'll count it.

As for the Class Chronicles, I could care less that psionic races and classes aren't treated well in the Forgotton Realms. A DM with half a mind could fit them in without a web article.

All we realy have is the Mind's Eye for decent material. I'm not holding my breath for Races of the Mind or a Complete Mentalist. I think we have a better chance of seeing 4.0 come out next year than seeing either of those.

I'm not seeing how the feat is overpowered.
InkBlot

06-24-07, 07:20 PM
Scion Of The Twelve has two benefits, each of which is very powerful on it's own. Having both of them in a single feat with trivial requirements is overpowered.

It grants detect psionics at will. The only other feat that grants something simlar is Vatic Sight, which has a prerequisite of caster level 8. Not to mention, at 1st level detect psionics costs 1/4 of your power points! Getting it for free gives you more power points, and an extra power known, to spend on another power. It also blows away Hidden Talent (Detect Psionics) or the Telepathic Affinity [Host] feat, which give you two power points and a power known, or two 1/day psi-like abilities.

If that were all the feat did, it would be strong but perhaps not absolutely game-breaking. However, it also raises your manifester level twice as high as Overchannel can before level 8, and just as high as it can before level 15, without damaging you or requiring an extra feat+focus.

The feat gives you roughly three times the benefit you could get from feats at 8th level, but at 1st level.

That may be, but it's also hardly "most of WotC has forgotten that psionics exist." Psionics is getting screen time, and it isn't being treated as an afterthought either. It isn't being horribly mangled. It's being presented and promoted in a reasonable manner to the thousands of people who visit the D&D and FR websites every day.

And the lack of Elan fluff is something that is bemoaned almost every day here. Every little bit helps, even if it is a FR web enhancement.

The Sage has always been there to answer common questions which have easy answers. That's exactly what he's doing with the psionics-related questions. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think it's great. He hasn't even screwed up any of the questions.

OK, I admit it isn't broken as in "I have special abilities that are more powerful than your entire class (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0346.html)" But it is one single feat that makes several other feats, including one you can't get until 8th level, worthless.
ssvegeta555

06-24-07, 07:45 PM
The feat does seem too powerful, but I don't play FR so it doesn't worry me in the least. What I do like is the fluff for the Elan in FR. It was very interesting and gives hints that psionics could play a bigger role in the future for FR.

Regional feats are supposed to be more powerful than other feats, as an incentive to invest in the campaign setting. There's a Mulhorandi regional feat in Lost Empires of Faerun that lets whoever has it use detect evil, detect magic, detect poison, detect undead, and read magic three times each per day at a caster level equal to your character level.

I love that people are complaining because we're actually getting support content. What spoiled children we are!

The problem I have with WotC is that, other than Secrets of Sarlona and a few sections in Ebberon books, psionics gets crap. The Mind's Eye is our one lifeline to decent psionics material.

We are so starved for material here that we anticipate the release of a web article for a month before it comes out, then debate the article for weeks.

They create a system, and then leave it out in the cold to starve. Look at Incarnum. Its been out for nearly a year and it still doesn't have a forum.

It's still magic, so it goes under the Magic forum. :)

Incarnum doesn't work by any of the same rules as normal magic. Having the Incarnum fans posting there is like deleting the entirity of the psionics boards and expecting us to move to the magic forum.

Makes me wonder: Why does so little of the Mind's Eye stuff ever make it's way into a hardcover book like Complete Psionic? Are there copyright issues is it just that the writer's of the ComPs just didn't want to talk to you?

It'd be nice if the Minds Eye stuff became an official book... Then my DM would let me use it all T-T

They did however use some of the past Mind's Eye material when it was appropriate to the new material. Hence the credit to myself and Scott in the notes on where material was gathered from. Considering my job here is Web Developer I am honored to have any of the material I wrote in the books that have been released on psionics.

Your DM's is odd. The Mind's Eye stuff is on the WotC website and has to pass through R&D--how much more official does he want?

I know I wouldn't mind paying for Mind's Eye goodness, collected in a nice hardcover volume on good paper and with new art. Sure beats thumbing through a bunch of non-indexed printouts.

Heck, people bought the Dragon Compendium.

Some spells in the defunct Far Corners of the World column made it to the appropriate environment book (Frostburn, Sandstorm, Stormwrack).

From my experience, new Mind's Eye articles appear between midnight and 1AM Eastern Time, which means I get to read them at lunch break my time - and the expanded classes for ardents, divine minds, lurks, and erudites is here now (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20070629a), and it's a whooper compared to previous expanded classes. :D

Dig this:

four separate elemental mantles (Air, Earth, Fire, Water) for the ardent.
astral construct and stygian goodies for the divine mind.
alternate lurk augments.
mantle power and spell access for erudites.

Can you say WHOOPEE?!

Well… I can see it's already being discussed here.

... Mark... You are a god among men o.o

I'm having a serious flavour MELTDOWN! O.o Brilliant! Freaking awesome! O.o

And in honesty, even though I have trouble with cash, if the Minds Eye came out as an official D&D book, I'd buy it o.o Even if I have to go into my food money to do it, I'd buy it o.o

Don't sell the idea short guys. I mean, how many of us read Mind Eye, like the stuff, and even use it or consider using it, or WANT to use it? Wouldn't it be nice to have a nice special book rather than flipping through sheets of printouts, or trying to find where the bookmark to the right webpage is, etc.

I think people would buy it... And at least we know it would be worth it big time =D

I think the erudite just got a little overpowered.

Too bad that Extra Unique Power didn't make it in.

06-29-07, 09:50 PM
That Spell as Power cuts against the grain of traditional psionic flavor, I'm still trying to completely figure out how the ectopic ally works, and the tribal ardent losing psicraft seems a little off, since druids get spellcraft, but otherwise a very good article.

Having a separate mantle for each of the four elements? This was so obvious, i can't believe Bruce and Christopher didn't think of it when they were coming up with "psionic domains".

Mark, you have my vote for being the lead writer on the next all-psionics book WOTC puts out, if and when that happens.

Yeah, I know given the overwhelmingly negative response that Comp Psi got, that may be a while.:raincloud
Lycanthromancer

If Complete Psionic had been well done, rather than a bunch of garbage, then it would've gotten a much better response, and they would've made a bunch of money. Frankly, it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on, OR the 5 minutes they spent on playtesting.

Look at Untapped Potential. That's gotten a really good response, and guess what? It's not because it's psionics, or because it was badly conceived, poorly implemented, and not even vaguely edited. It got good reviews because the people that created it cared about the material that they were producing, and wanted the people who used it to be happy about what they did, rather than just throwing the word 'psionics' on it and expecting everyone to fall over themselves to buy it just because of that word.

Mark and those that work with him get this. They care about what they're doing, and that what they put out is high quality. I just wish that the rest of WotC was the same.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I wish to say, "Thanks, Mark, for what you've done for us. You care, and that's definitely a great thing."

If they had let Mark and Scott be some of the designers for CPsi, the book wouldn't have been trash.

Something makes me think that he WASN'T in charge. He just worked on some of what was in the book. Like the ardent and lurk. Y'know, the few awesome parts.
InkBlot

07-02-07, 12:27 PM
You forget that Mr. Cordell was responsible for The Psionics Handbook as well.

What really shocked me, more so than the poor quality of the editing or rules design, was the Illithid Heritage feats. Cordell wrote the book on Illithids, literally (http://www.rpg.net/news+reviews/reviews/rev_5522.html). I have trouble imagining the Illithid Heritage feats slipping through if he really was in charge.
Lycanthromancer

I'm willing to forgive him the Psionics Handbook. He learned his mistakes, and was obviously overwhelmingly repentant. The problem with CPsi was that they likely just petitioned him for material, and he gave it to them, without having been able to look at the other otyugh-rejected offal that they put between the covers.
