| sages06-27-07, 05:12 PM | How powerful is Kimmuriel Oblodra? Are there other powerful psions in Faerun? |
| Lycanthromancer06-27-07, 05:22 PM | Are there any powerful psions in Faerun? Yes. Kimmuriel. :P As for how powerful he is, if he's being used in a 3.5 conversion, he's easily epic. After all, the power he uses to transfer the energy from blows was toned down from 2.0, then made into an epic power. So yes, he's quite strong. Also, there are very few psionicists in FR, aside from monsters like mindflayers and aboliths. The few psionicists mentioned (to my knowledge) were the Oblodras, and they were, obviously, obliterated (aside from Kimmuriel). |
| The Livewire06-27-07, 07:15 PM | Well there's the psions in Serpent's Kiss. The one Yuan Ti is at least 16th level, as she tosses mind seed out and about. |
| Tealgorthian06-27-07, 07:19 PM | In 3e, Elminster was stated with Power Points, for what that is worth. Most of the psionic stuff is localized in certain areas, if I remember right.. mostly with the traditional Psionic monsters. I cant think of a single psionic hero out of FR... |
| Caterpillar06-27-07, 07:29 PM | Yes. Kimmuriel. :P As for how powerful he is, if he's being used in a 3.5 conversion, he's easily epic. The few psionicists mentioned (to my knowledge) were the Oblodras, and they were, obviously, obliterated (aside from Kimmuriel). Despite the fact that the power is statted out as a epic power, I don't think Kimmuriel is an epic level manifester. I think it's more along the lines of Salvatore using certain writer privileges. |
| CaptainPicard06-27-07, 07:39 PM | Well, I haven't read anything past Servant of the Shard, but Kimmuriel seems basically invincible to all the other characters in the series. Given that they are already borderline epic, Kimmuriel is obviously above them, and probably epic. |
| Andyr06-27-07, 07:40 PM | Magadon Kest (from Paul S. Kemp's novels, which I enjoy a lot) is probably a Ranger/Psion multiclass and is fairly powerful. |
| Noodles237506-27-07, 08:50 PM | Despite the fact that the power is statted out as a epic power, I don't think Kimmuriel is an epic level manifester. I think it's more along the lines of Salvatore using certain writer privileges. Agreed. You've gotta remember that when Salvatore started writing we were in the depths of 2nd edition. It wouldnt be very internally consistent to the series for Kimmuriel to suddenly be unable to manifest a power because editions changed :) Moreover, if Kimmuriel was an epic manifester, there is no reason for him to stick around with Jarlaxle and take orders from him. In fact, an epic manifester could have probably lain the smack down on Matron Baenre who i'm fairly certain was pre-epic. :) I mean if you want to pick editions with Salvatore, Drizzt pwns a Balor with a frostbrand scimitar that I'm pretty sure should have done nothing special to a Balor. In fact, by 3.5 DR rules, Drizzt's scimitar as statted could not have penetrated Errtu's DR much less slain/banished him. |
| Tealgorthian06-27-07, 10:01 PM | Icingdeath is clearly more than just a Frostbrand, its just no one has ever bothered to stat it properly. I'm willing to bet Salavatore intended for it to be a near-Artifact level, extremely limited, sword. It clearly has some Empathic Abilities, as Drizzt often describes feeling it "Hunger" when there is a fire-based monster around. Errtu's is an ADvanced Balor too. He should beable to pwn Drizzt ass, but that wouldn't make for good reading, would it? ;) |

| anarchy197306-27-07, 10:57 PM | I looked a while ago for stats for Kimmuriel, & found this posted on the Forgotten Realms NPC thread, not sure who statted him out or where they got the stats, but seems pretty reasonable. Kimmurial: Male drow Psion 16; Cr 17; Med-sized Humanoid; HD16d4+48; hp 82; Init +7; Spd 30 ft; AC 25, touch 15,flat-footed 18; Base Atk +8; Grp +9; Full Atk +12/+7(1d6+4/19-20x2, +3 ghost touch short sword); SQ Drow traits, SR 27 Discipline (telepath), Power Points per Day 279, Powers Known 30, Max Power Level 8; AL CE; SV Fort +13, Ref +13, Will +17; Str 12, Dex 17, Con 17, Int 24, Wis 14, Cha 15. Skills and Feats: Bluff +8, Concentration +18, Diplomacy +8, Gather Information +13, Hide +13, Knowledge (arcane) +12, Knowledge (dungeoneering) +15, Knowledge (menzoberranzan) +12, Knowledge (menzoberranzan history) +12, Knowledge (planes) +13, Knowledge (psionics) +26, Knowledge (religion) +10, Listen +9, Move Silently +8, Psicraft +26, Search +14, Sense Motive +12, Spot +9; Power Penetration, Combat Manifestation, Psionic Talent, Empower Power, Quicken Power, Dodge, Mobility, Improved Initiative, Psionic Endowment, Psicrystal Affinity. Possessions: Psicrown of Discerning Watcher, Amulet of Health +4, Bracers of Armor +6, Ring of Protection +2, Ring of Freedom of Movement, Drow Boots, piwafwi of resistance +5. I also was interested in getting the information on the power he uses which someone on the EN World Boards put me in the right direction. "FireLance" posted: "Kinetic Control was a psychokinetic science in the 2e Dark Sun psionic sourcebook The Will And The Way. It essentially allowed a psionicist to remove kinetic energy from an object by touch (from a sword blow or an arrow that hit him, for example), store it within himself, and then bestow it on another object at some point in the future. Essentially, the psionicist absorbs physical damage instead of taking it, and can deal the amount of damage he absorbed to any target he hits in combat. If he ceases to maintain the power while he has energy still stored, he takes 2 points of damage for every point still stored. It's thus quite similar to the 3e epic spell. Under the 2e psionic system it had an initial cost of 15 pp and a maintenance cost of 7 pp per round. As Arkhandus suggested, a balanced 3e kinetic control would probably work similar to energy conversion (a 7th-level power)." I got a pdf copy of The Will & The Way from RPG Drivethrough for about $4.95.. |
| Suldarr'essalar06-28-07, 02:23 AM | There's Encephalithid, an elder brain telepath 20. That's 40ML easily able to manifest epic powers (he manifested twice a power that summoned iillithid god Illsensine). He's probably the most powerfull manifester in FR. |
| sages06-28-07, 08:03 AM | I like that stats for Kimmuriel, thanks. I would say that he is maybe stronger( Road of the patriarch and he is the leader of the infamous Bregan D'aerthe). I like Magadon Kest, is there any more info on him ? Am i the only one who would like to see more psions in FR novels? |
| Caterpillar06-28-07, 08:04 AM | I like that stats for Kimmuriel, thanks. I would say that he is maybe stronger( Road of the patriarch and he is the leader of the infamous Bregan D'aerthe). I like Magadon Kest, is there any more info on him ? Am i the only one who would like to see more psions in FR novels? Nope, not at all! I'm reading Eberron "The Dragon Below" Series just because a main character is a psion. There isn't a huge host of psionic powers in it though so it's kind of upsetting, good read though IMO. |
| Aldareth06-28-07, 08:31 AM | Iolaum Elder brain lich / Wiz 40 ( ?) |

Anyone caught in this cone must succeed on a DC 23 Will save or be stunned for 3d4 rounds. Illithids often hunt using this power and then drag off one or two of their stunned victims to feed upon. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, an illithid must hit a Small, Medium, or Large creature with its tentacle attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple attack as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and attaches the tentacle to the opponent’s head. An illithid can grab a Huge or larger creature, but only if can somehow reach the foe’s head. If an illithid begins its turn with at least one tentacle attach, it can try to attach its remaining tentacles with a single grapple check. The opponent can escape with a single successful grapple check or an Escape Artist check, but the illithid gets a +2 circumstance bonus for every tentacle that was attached at the beginning of the opponent’s turn. Extract (Ex): An illithid that begins its turn with all four tentacles attached and that makes a successful grapple check automatically extracts the opponent’s brain, instantly killing that creature. This power is useless vs constructs, elementals, oozes, plants, and undead. It is not instantly fatal to foes with multiple heads, such as ettins and hydras. | sages06-29-07, 04:30 AM | I thought that only Kimmuriel escaped the destruction of house Oblodra. It is nice to see that another psion had escaped. |

| Katash07-01-07, 09:16 PM | Whadaya mean no psi hero's the whole trilogy on the yuan-ti by Lisa smedman has a central psi character. He isn't powerful yet though by the third book he'd just mastered metamorphosis and those books are written using 3rd edition rules. Never saw stats for him though.:weep: Would dearly love to see a new series FR on a Psion using 3.5 rules (a gish char would be great) Cheers. |
| Optimator07-01-07, 09:29 PM | i think it would have made for GREAT reading. :smirk: |

| Mindolin07-02-07, 01:08 PM | The thing is that Kimmurial is most likely stronger than Jarlaxle. I think it was mentioned in one of the books that Kimmurial didn't want to lead because it took time away from his experiments. |

I think it was mentioned in one of the books that Kimmurial didn't want to lead because it took time away from his experiments. +++ Hmmm maybe. One has to add the fact that while Kimmurial might have more raw power, Jarlaxle has greater political savvy and always seems to have the knowledge of either how to beat an opponent or how to save his own hindquarters. :twocents: |

I think it was stated in one of the books that Jarlaxle, while a powerful warrior, was strong not because of his fighting ability, but because to fight him you had to fight all of Bregan Da'erthe, and likely a fair bit of House Baenre because of some of the alliances between them. |
| sages07-03-07, 06:11 PM | Maybe Kimmuriel could kill Jarlaxle but killing him would be suicide at best. |
| primemover00307-03-07, 08:57 PM | There's recently been a series of Class Chronicals articles written by Eytan Bernstein all about psions and psionics in the Realm! Perhaps, but Jarlaxle is a very capable character even when alone. IIRC, in Servant of the Shard Jarlaxle talked about Zaknafein Do'Urden (you know, the father of that what's-his-name) with Artemis Entreri. He said that after his son was born, Zaknafein had told Jarlaxle that he had finally found someone that might be strong enough to beat Jarlaxle in battle, which would mean that the mercenary was stronger than the weapons master, one of the best warriors in Menzoberranzan. I think Jarlaxle is a lot better than anyone around him gives credit for, it's in his character to not reveal his true capabilities to anyone. But if we talk about D&D and not literature, Kimmuriel would easily pwn Jarlaxle. Just like balors and mariliths pwn pathetic Drow Rangers. |
| Senka08-16-07, 12:41 PM | he manifested twice a power that summoned iillithid god Illsensine It didn’t say that in Underdark! Was that from a novel? And how does it fit with the Time of Trouble? His Challenge Rating is (arguably) 55, making him the most powerful character in Faerûn, though not the character most skilled at psionics. There's recently been a series of Class Chronicals articles written by Eytan Bernstein all about psions and psionics in the Realm! I found them fascinating! | AntiDjinn08-16-07, 01:14 PM | I think Ms. smedman wrote those with 3/25 rules, as it seems to mix both. I believe the second book was already written before the XPH was published. There is considerable lag between writing and publication of novels. I highly doubt that WotC makes advanced copies of game material available to writers working on novels under one of their licenses. They probably don't involve authors in rules development, unless they already happen to work on both sides (such as Keith Baker). As noted, authors (especially Salvatore) don't always follow the game rules when telling their stories (current edition or otherwise). This is fine; they are authors not gamers and the stories they tell support and develop a setting but are not additional game material. When you buy a D&D novel you want to good novel not a transcript of someone's game. And if you are trying to argue rules interpretation with your DM, waiving an FR novel in his face does not help. |
| Mindolin08-17-07, 09:13 AM | Oh, also, Matron Baenre(the old one) was a level 25 character in AD&D. |
| Yorath_theWolf08-17-07, 12:27 PM | while the articles likely touch on it, Psionist were also mentioned in the PGtF. there's the Kakiesh'erai an elven faction of psionist in Evereska. no big names are mentioned in the PGtF though. there's the Stray Thoughts adventureing group in sembia lead by Jacenalle Traen a 16th lvl Wilder. the Duegar assassion society made up of Soulknifes the Forak-Erach-Maek but again no members are mentioned by name. and finally the College of the Eclipse and again, saddly no ranked members are mentioned. |
