| invisiblekid04-01-07, 04:30 PM | I've been using a psionic character (5th level wilder) for about...four sessions (the group I play with gathers every Saturday), now, so I may just not be properly adjusted to the class. I won't even get into the confusion I had with the powers I could use. :P Anyway. The Levitate power. Nowhere, between page 114 of the Expanded Psionics Handbook and page 248 of the Player's Handbook does the power/spell say anything about using, or not using, powers while levitating. I assume it requires all of my mental capability to pull the power off, but...is it at all possible to do two things at once, given the nature of levitating? I could understand not being able to Mind Thrust, while throwing something with Telekinetic Thrust, but...could I not levitate and telekinetically thrust something? (Maybe even just something smaller than usual?) |

Special When a psion, wilder, or a psychic warrior manifests this power, the target is the manifester (not a willing creature or an object). ================ Levitate Transmutation Level: Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V, S, F Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal or close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: You or one willing creature or one object (total weight up to 100 lb./level) Duration: 1 min./level (D) Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No Levitate allows you to move yourself, another creature, or an object up and down as you wish. A creature must be willing to be levitated, and an object must be unattended or possessed by a willing creature. You can mentally direct the recipient to move up or down as much as 20 feet each round; doing so is a move action. You cannot move the recipient horizontally, but the recipient could clamber along the face of a cliff, for example, or push against a ceiling to move laterally (generally at half its base land speed). A levitating creature that attacks with a melee or ranged weapon finds itself increasingly unstable; the first attack has a -1 penalty on attack rolls, the second -2, and so on, to a maximum penalty of -5. A full round spent stabilizing allows the creature to begin again at -1. Focus Either a small leather loop or a piece of golden wire bent into a cup shape with a long shank on one end. Conclusion: you can manifest powers (standard actions) and still move the target (which in most psionic cases is yourself). You can even manifest full-round powers (like Astral Construct), but if you do so you cannot move that round (at the same time, you don't fall). In the case of Mind Thrust, it's purely telepathic, no force involved. In the case of telekinesis effects, assume the Levitate power braces yourself when you use it if you REALLY need to explain why you don't move back from thrusting something. |
| AntiDjinn04-01-07, 04:50 PM | Levitate does not require concentration to maintain its duration; if you go up 20 feet you will stay there until the power expires (or you do) with no further attention. Yes, you can manifest powers. If you use Levitate to move in a given round then you would be subject to the normal rules for taking a move and standard action in the same round. The spell does specify penalties to weapon attack rolls and the power does not note any exceptions in this area. Your footing is not perfectly stable with Levitate so if you attack with a melee or ranged weapon you suffer a cumulative -1 penalty to each attack to a max of -5 unless you spend a full round engaging your psychic gyros and stabilizing. You can still manifest attack powers (the limitation, by the RAW, only applies to weapon attacks). So if you fire off an energy ray it is reactionless and does not knock you off balance. Oddly, being hit with an attack does not knock you off balance. Good thing, because I have found whenever a character takes to the air he draws a feaking hail of arrows even if other threats seem more obvious. |
