| Tekhen03-08-07, 09:40 AM | Hi guys, I am quite happy to see psionic items in the MIC. The items found in the complete series (including CPsi) and several other books (XPH, BoED etc) are in there - revised and edited to fit into the new magic item format. For example, the famous and loved "Torc of power preservation" has been changed dramatically (reduced to a few uses per day but much cheaper). But... what I don't like is that some items were "stolen" from Psi and transformed into magic items - e.g. the heartening enhancement is now not psionic anymore. That's a pity. The necessity to accept psionic origin of some very cool items or the knowledge about their "psionicity" could have been a door opener for people that still shun psionics :( |
| ElyasRavenwood03-08-07, 08:06 PM | I understand what you mean by saying things were stolen from the psionic handbook. There are many things that have been taken from the Psionic Handbook and put into more “mainstream” D and D. For example there is the Immediate Action. This immediate action is printed in almost every supplement published. It first appeared in the Expanded Psionic Handbook. Lets see the Reserve feats look very similar to quite a few psionic feats. What else can I think of? In the players Handbook 2 they have Combat form feats. One is required to maintain his “combat focus” and he has a particular benefit, and if he expends his combat focus, he gets another benefit. In a recent dragon magazine they had a class acts article where they talked about “Arcane Focus”. Finally in page 153 of Unearthed Arcana they offer a spell point system. While the number of spell points a wizard cleric and druid get differ from the psionic power points a psion gets, on page 155 they talk about the magic point cost to cast each spell. The progression is almost exactly the same progression in the Expanded psionics handbook. I know there are probably lots of other examples. |

| Fargren03-09-07, 01:43 PM | Immediate and swift actions First Appeared in the Minis Handbook No, Minis had Swift but not immediate. |
| Xaxor03-09-07, 05:13 PM | They nerfed the Torc? :censored: What else did they nerf? What else made it in anyway? |
| ElyasRavenwood03-09-07, 10:45 PM | Fargren, I should have checked the publishing dates of Unearthed Arcana, and the XPH. My mistake |
| Kobold Avenger03-10-07, 07:28 AM | Did they nerf the Collision weapon property, or is it still the best +2 special weapon property ever? |
| InkBlot03-10-07, 02:06 PM | Actually, UA was written before the XPH. And The Psionics Handbook was written three years before Unearthed Arcana. |
| Tekhen03-10-07, 03:16 PM | Did they nerf the Collision weapon property, or is it still the best +2 special weapon property ever? They changed it slightly, it is now a "magical" weapon enhancement. The ML 10th is now a CL 6th and the wording is not completely identical. But the effect has not changed. :) Dislocator has also been changed to close-distance teleportations. And the Skin of Psion is cheaper... Well, I think there are several changes in pricing and some adjustments here and there. The formerly psionic items are still activated by a command thought, though. |
| Xaxor03-10-07, 05:21 PM | Well, the art gallery is up, and I see what they did here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mic_gallery/103169.jpg). Adamantine Mind Blade Gauntlets. Silly Wizards. There are also Tentacle Rods, which is a nice bonus. This (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mic_gallery/103366.jpg) is almost too cool for words, even if it is a magic item. |
| Asadeseth03-10-07, 06:22 PM | They nerfed the torc?? WHY?? did they nerf rings of wizardry?? if not then why not? |
| The Livewire03-10-07, 07:24 PM | They nerfed the torc?? WHY?? did they nerf rings of wizardry?? if not then why not? Becasue Magic and Psionics are transparent.... ...Unless it would benefit the psion. |
| Deekin03-10-07, 08:06 PM | Becasue Magic and Psionics are transparent.... ...Unless it would benefit the psion. Or hinder the wizard. |
| Tekhen03-11-07, 12:49 PM | Mmh. Maybe this change is even benign... You get 9 new torcs for the price of an old one, each of them usable 5 times per day. So, if you manifest less than 45 powers per day, you can even save money :D |
| Deekin03-12-07, 03:42 AM | Psionic Items confirmed in magic item compendium, including revised crystal capacitors. |
| Bacris03-12-07, 09:57 AM | I assume you mean Cognizance Crystals? |
| Deekin03-12-07, 10:11 AM | Yep, they are in the art gallery. Lession: When posting at 12:00 relative to you, you will make mistakes. |
| ArcTan03-12-07, 05:06 PM | They nerfed the torc?? WHY?? did they nerf rings of wizardry?? if not then why not? The dudes making the MIC have basically been saying that tons of really cool magic items in the book never actually see use in a campaign, because while they are really cool, they're way too expensive for a player to buy or a DM to drop into a treasure list (going by expected wealth by level) at the levels where they'd be useful, especially since there's a solid core of generally useful items that players and DMs equipping NPCs will always opt for first (generally the boring ones, like plain-old enhancement-bonus weapons and armor). So their solution is to try to increase the power of cool-but-weak items and decrease the power of cool-but-expensive items so that you have a good range of stuff that's all useful and all within the price range of an average character. |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-12-07, 06:12 PM | oh no they di'nt The Torc of Power Preservation is still fine. The "new" Torc of Power Preservation has the same relationship to the "old" Torc as Psuedonatural template A is to Psuedonatural template B. The one is just more powerful than the other. And they have the same name because : Commoner 1 with 1 rank of Knowledge (psi-) takes 20 , and doesn't find out about something that would make him/her/it cry :weep: . D&D is scary. Don't scare the Commoners. |

Don't scare the Commoners. Er, this isn't true. If Magic Item Compendium does the same thing Spell Compendium did (and I don't see why it wouldn't), then all items with the same name as earlier items are now to be treated as the updated/errataed/whatever *official* version of the items, with the old version of the items gone. Moreover, items that have a *different* name from older items but that are clearly based on older items will also replace those older items, with a little chart showing you what new item corresponds to what old item. Of course you can do whatever you like in your own campaign. But the point of these compendia seems to be a way to fix the balance issues with a bunch of problematic old spells or magic items at once, as well as collect them in one place for handy reference. |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-12-07, 08:24 PM | PROPHECY !! I don't want to hear it { ... yet ... } neener , neener hear no evil ack ... maybe its my psuedonatural template acting up :pbbbtt: |

| awaken_D_M_golem03-13-07, 05:00 PM | some body take away my "Bud&d Lite" and stop me from saying to johnkretzer : "I love you , man  " "no really , I love you , man  " :pint: ack .. too late |

Though I just don't get it...how is the Torc of PP really overpowered. I mean I play a psion with one and I am not breaking anything...it is a lousy point for heaven sake....:nonono: |
| Asadeseth03-14-07, 01:59 AM | ArcTan Er, this isn't true. Frell that, they should have made a second cheeper simalar iteam. |
| gatharak03-14-07, 10:18 AM | Torc is cheap! Ha ha! |
| The Livewire03-15-07, 07:38 AM | Torc is cheap! Ha ha! Ouch. Seriously, I wonder if these 'corrected' items are going to be updated in the SRD. and I just checked. Ring of Wizardry III: 70K. Torc of Power Preservation: 72K. Does anyone honestly think the Torc was overpowered for that cost? for a bit less, a 13+ level wizard gets at least 4 empowered magic missiles out of that. |
| Bacris03-15-07, 08:22 AM | Torc is a good item - but not for 72k. I'll be sticking with the SRD on this one - and since this does not errata the XPH, but rather updates it in a different book, and the SRD is the XPH crunch, it will likely not be changing in the SRD. |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-15-07, 03:59 PM | Now that the hangover has worn off , ... ache-aholic ... umm ... yeah ... i think i referenced a beer commercial of drinking silly-ness. maybe it is drinking silly-ness , that inspired a reference to : not bud light , or bud&d lite , but rather butt a-light. technically i'm in your corner , just not too close ... :D seriously - jk is right - what was so broken about the Torc ? and why not , a Lesser Torc set-up ? Seems simple to me. Oohh , thaaat's right , Psionics needs to be properly nerfed , compared to Wizards , to keep the yapping down. edit : I posted before reading Bacris just above. Yep - XPH is core and SRD - three cheers for that !! |
| ArcTan03-16-07, 03:11 PM | Ouch. That's the point -- that it costs too much for what it does and hence won't be seen that much in actual play. |
| Asadeseth03-16-07, 06:09 PM | Odd, pg 172 of the XPH has it at 36,000 gp. |
| Bacris03-16-07, 08:16 PM | That's the point - the Magic Item Compendium changes the price from the XPH. |
| Asadeseth03-16-07, 08:52 PM | OOOOoooooOOKAyyy, so they limited the use AND doubled the price??? what does it reduce the cost buy 5 points or something now??? |
| ArcTan03-16-07, 11:44 PM | Er, d20srd.org also has the price at 36,000. I think the person who named the 72,000 figure was just mistaken. |
| MerlintheTuna03-17-07, 12:06 AM | OOOOoooooOOKAyyy, so they limited the use AND doubled the price??? what does it reduce the cost buy 5 points or something now???Sounds like a misquote of the original price, judging by this: Mmh. Maybe this change is even benign... You get 9 new torcs for the price of an old one, each of them usable 5 times per day. So, if you manifest less than 45 powers per day, you can even save money :D |
| AntiDjinn03-17-07, 04:15 AM | I like the fact that they didn't stick psionic items in a separate section or make them a side-bar. Instead, they are in with the other items in alphabetical order. So DM's who would have simply skipped the psionic chapter might accidentally read one or two of them and realize that they might enrich his game and the system may not be broken. |
| Jadeite03-17-07, 08:06 AM | The new version of Mindfeeder is nice. Not as powerful as the original version but much more useful than the errataed one. While you now get only 1/5 of the damage as Temporary Power Points for one minute, but its usable all day long and counts only as a +1 enhancement. Very nice for a lurk with Improved Critical and Telling Blow. |
