| pickfoll06-20-07, 11:41 AM | Hi, I have a player that wants to make a new 9th level power and I am looking for input as to what other people think of it. Memory Mastery Telepathy Level: 9 Range: Touch Area of Effect: One mind Manifestation Time: one round Duration: Instantaneous, or One Day per level (see below) Other stuff in stat block: TBD, but pretty standard This power can do different things depending on what you want to do with it. The options include: Restore lost memories - restores memories lost through any means to a creature who has memory loss. This restoration can be selective, with the psion choosing which memories to restore. However, if this is selectively done, the subject receives a Will save to avoid the selectivity and restore all lost memories. Erase memories - erase all memories or selectively erase memories from a subject. This use of the power allows a Will save. Protect memories, other - this encapuslates a selected set of memories within a subject so that they cannot be accessed by anyone, including the subject. This memories can be unlocked only by a specific trigger phrase or by a further use of this power, though if the further use is by a different psion than the original creator of the protection, the subject gets a will save to avoid the unlocking of the memories. The psion can use this form of the power on himself. Protect memories, self - this protects the psion's own memories from tampering - no memories may be implanted, erased, or altered from any source, not even a wish (similar to a mind blank type of protection). Only a manifestation of this power can unlock those memories, and this allows the psion a will save with a +1 bonus for every level the psion exceeds the level of the psion attempting to break loose the memories. This form of the power lasts for one day per level. Extra power points - perhaps have extra points spent give a bonus to the various Will saves in favor of the person resisting? - alternatly, every 2 extra power points can raise the DC to resist for an unwilling subject. (Standard fare). |

Sorry, but there's far too much overlap. Your are right there is some overlap but, but even if you had all those powers you still could not do what this power could. Does that mean it is over powered or is it filling in a niche that is missing? |
| Lycanthromancer06-20-07, 01:02 PM | It just doesn't do anything unique or interesting. Adding augments (or just using as-is) the existing powers seems to work better, really. |
| Tyroki06-20-07, 01:06 PM | Yeah I was wondering if you can research Augments... Is that another "Up to the DM" thing? |
| Lycanthromancer06-20-07, 01:10 PM | Pretty much. I don't actually think there are any rules for researching augments. I was going to come up with some, but I can't think of any acceptable ways of doing it. It should be less than that needed for a power, but what should be the criteria for determining the cost of an augment? |
| Tyroki06-20-07, 01:14 PM | 100xp and three days per each power point cost of the augmentation being added? |
| Lycanthromancer06-20-07, 01:17 PM | What about the level of the power to be augmented? What about augments that are static, versus those that you can continue pumping power points into to get greater effect? |
| Tyroki06-20-07, 01:20 PM | What about the level of the power to be augmented? What about augments that are static, versus those that you can continue pumping power points into to get greater effect? How should I know =3 I'm just a newbie taking a stab at it. |
| Lycanthromancer06-20-07, 01:24 PM | *Stabs* |
| Tyroki06-20-07, 01:27 PM | *Sidesteps* |
| Racinante06-20-07, 01:38 PM | If the player wants to research that as a 9th level power, sure, it seems balanced and very flexible. Area of effect needs to be one creature or one living creature. There does not appear to be any overlap with psychic chirurgery or bestow power, although you may wish to put a time scope around the erase memories functionality (maybe a days worth or 1 day/level) or give the target a bonus on their will save as that seems to be the most abusable section of the power. One question. If a psion uses the "Protect memories, other" on himself, how will he know when to reverse the effects or even that the protection has taken place? |
| pickfoll06-20-07, 05:08 PM | One question. If a psion uses the "Protect memories, other" on himself, how will he know when to reverse the effects or even that the protection has taken place? If you did "Protect memories, other" on yourself then you would be depended on the part about a "specific trigger phrase" to unlock your protected memories as the most likely way to get the memories back. That is if you wanted to get them back, you could also be doing it to yourself just to forget something. That raise a question, what if your protect a memory so it is locked it away from you and then someone ask you about it while detecting lie, and you say you know nothing about it. Would you detect as lying? |

Would you detect as lying? In zone of truth, you could say you know nothing about it, because the lie is unintentional. Depending on the mechanics of the spell or power that detects the lie, you could have some interesting RP opportunities either way. |
