| KalTorak07-04-07, 03:38 PM | Greetings All, I do not have the XPH infront of me, and never have. i understand the basics of how they work with manifestingpowers. However, what i do not understand is, which classes excell at doing what (caster focused, not melee such as SK, PW ect.). I want to play a character that can walk around with nothing and still be able to kick some ass. Im basically looking for a Psi-Class that is focused to the offensive side of things, one that looks after himself more then others (not so many defensive spells, as im going to play my character as a self cenetered arrogant *******. not to **** the party off, but to get a new char feel.). Along with this, which race would benefit/optimize me the best. Such as granted power points, spell like abilities, ect. we are level 5 (maybe 6, depending on if the dragon the party killed gave enough XP to level them up, plan for 5). I am however looking to stay away from HD and LA as i will want to be able to manifest the highest powers i can. Also, along with this build would be feat selection, as i know nothing in this department about Psionics, i will need help choosing feats. All help is very much appreciated as I mine as well be concidered a noob when it comes to Psionics. |
| KalTorak07-04-07, 05:32 PM | Thought I would post my stats as well I rolled (by means of re-rolling 1's) 18,18,16,16,14,14 |
| pud07-04-07, 05:39 PM | I do not have the XPH infront of me, and never have. There's your problem. Get the book. Read it. Ask questions after and I'll be happy to help. |
| Manyfist07-04-07, 05:43 PM | Check the SRD for the basics. |
| Soahc07-05-07, 12:07 PM | Read the book buddy, have some decency to actually no what you want to have, instead of giving a vauge overview. And you will not get my help because.... see below You did not roll those stats Everyone that has read the Expanded Psionics Handbook gains minor Clairsentience over people who haven't. |
| KalTorak07-05-07, 12:21 PM | Well im so glad your cemented in the idea i didnt roll those stats...plus i didnt think it really mattered what peopled rolled. i figured it was polite to throw them out there to help whoever, help me. next time ill make sure your there to watch me roll those...or perhaps you could ask my DM who sees the rolls who frequents these forums...im 100% sure he will say i rolled those...and guess what? he was there. and its true i need to get the book, but i figured as a prelude to buying it some help before hand wouldnt be that bad. but thanks anyway. |
| Ecalsneerg07-05-07, 01:29 PM | I just figured out WHY he thought you didn't roll them. That's about 64 point buy. A "tough" campaign is 28 point, "Heroic" is 32. That is incredibly good stats, and I'd suggest your DM ups the CR of encounters by 1 or 2. |
| Deekin07-05-07, 01:46 PM | Egoists Shapechange Nomads teleport Shapers make things Seers know things Kineticists explode things Telepath control things |
| Rageheart07-05-07, 02:04 PM | ... Kineticists explode things Telepath control things Kineticists control THINGS (Control Object/body) Telepath explode Heads (Mind Thrust/Cranial Deluge) |
| Psionx07-05-07, 02:15 PM | Psiblade walks around with nothing alot and pulls out blades to kick a55 from ectoplasm but isn't the most powerful out there. I'm personally biased towards shaper because of free minor creation (as if it mattered(that it's free)) and astral construct. Do NOT buy complete psionic, it is evil. I have heard good things about Untapped Potential but XPH is good I guess. If you just want to test the waters of psionics... http://www.d20srd.org/ Remember that psions cannot... -Become invisible without a saving throw of sorts to enemies -Use most save or die effects against creatures immune to mind effecting -Counterspell (although disintegrate isn't bad) -Have auto scaling powers -Actually use multiple metapsionic feats on a single power easily -Use alot of stuff that wizards usually get off the bat without getting a discipline for it -Learn powers like a wizard can learn spells -Effectively heal others without the use of affinity field or share pain They do however get some cool stuff like choosing energy types, messing around with time, and playing cool tricks on the people who aren't immune vs mind effecting. (f***ing around with time being my personal favorite I guess) |
| KalTorak07-05-07, 05:26 PM | Ok, Ive come to a conclusion based off reading the classes via PDF. i was torn between a Kenetisist or a Telepath...Wanting to play the more subtle of the two destructive types, i went with Telepathy. I figured with another kenetisist in the party, a Telepath who focuses on Mind spells would work well along side one another. Im out to play my character differently now that ive read some. Figured instead of looking out for me, ill try to make as many allies as i can. (possible i may go thrall herder) to become powerful by means of connections, and by means of exploding some heads along the way. My character wont walk around flaunting her abilities, she will be subtle about it. i will wear leather armor (taking the armor penelty to attack rolls via no proficiency) and be equiped with many daggers (the persona im going for is much like a Nadrak dancer from David Eddings series the Belgariad/The Malloreon, with a Polgara sense about her). ill have an arrogance about me that comes from my ability to watch out for myself, and be able to handle things if they go wrong. The help i need now is power selection...heres a list of what i have picked based on what i concider helpful (this is with a level 4 character, with a 20 Intel) 29 power points (17 class, 10 bonus, 2 race) 1st level powers (5 known) - Energy Ray, Mind Thrust, Vigor, Empathy, Charm Psionics 2nd level powers (4 known) - Cloud Mind, Inflict Pain, Enegry Push, Suggestion so do i go anywhere from here, or is this so far a good start? |
| Minmaximus07-05-07, 05:59 PM | Shaper. Astral Construct is all that. Its amazing. Better than summon monster. Lots better. Spec your feats for it, and go crazy. You can be arrogant when you ALWAYS got big back up. Read up on it. And if you really want the crunch, be a telekineticist, and take the expanded knowledge feat at 3rd level to get astral construct. Then you rule, and make your DM cry a little. And I totally believe you rolled those stats;) . But if your DM lets you play em, then more power to you. |
| monkman3307-06-07, 06:10 AM | if it is 4d6 re roll 1s, i believe it. I;ve seen better with rerolls and a streak. |
| Fleem07-06-07, 12:59 PM | -snip- i will wear leather armor (taking the armor penelty to attack rolls via no proficiency) No armor check penalty on leather, so no penalty. The help i need now is power selection... 1st level powers (5 known) - Energy Ray, Mind Thrust, Vigor, Empathy, Charm Psionics 2nd level powers (4 known) - Cloud Mind, Inflict Pain, Enegry Push, Suggestion Cloud Mind has always seemed like a waste to me, and you could probably use Suggestion much the same way. Also, you have energy ray, energy push, and mind thrust. At 1/3 of your total powers tied up in direct damage, are you sure you don't want to go kineticist? I'd recommend at least dropping Energy Ray. Pick up some more utility stuff, or some more telepath-appropriate attacks (deja vu or brain lock?). Keep at least one non-mind-affecting attack in there, though. |
| InkBlot07-06-07, 01:21 PM | I would recommend dropping energy push. Energy push is frustratingly bad. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=879277) Swap it out for swarm of crystals or crystal shard, if you want damage. Swap it out for grease or entangling ectoplasm if you want battlefield control. |
| KalTorak07-06-07, 08:30 PM | Good Point However with Eco Goo, i have a dourje at max charges with that. so what i may do, is swap out energy push, for brain lock? sound good? What im going with this character as far as OoB/OoC (out of battle/out of combat, wasnt sure those were abbreviations here or not) is to have two personalities, Pol and Lady Polgara (for those who read the Malloreon and the Belgariad know this character quiet well), while playing Pol's personality, im a risque dancer, who isnt afraid to flash daggers at any man who wanders his hand towards me. I use my Perform Dance and class skills to get what i want, along with not so subtle psionic powers (as ill be around people who dont care what i use, as in powers). So for example, with this personality I care very little if its known wether or not im capable of such powers. As with Lady Polgara however... As Lady Polgara, im a regal princess who shows a weak willed, danty exterior. Yet, has a rough, almost arrogant interior that she keeps beneath the surface. She wishes not to comprimise her status by displaying psionic powers, as other nobles may look down apon such acts (in this world). so to gain more noble friends, and attract higher ups, i will tend to only use class skills, such as bluff, diplomacy, sense motive, ect to gain trust and information. Perhaps I may use my more subtle psinoc powers if the opposition is stubborn, such as suggestion, empathy, ect. |
| KalTorak07-06-07, 09:34 PM | Concidering this build i think i may eventually go thrall herder (not very Polgara Esque, but this is D&D afterall). Taking that into account i need a Cohort that would compliment my fraililty quiet well. Im looking for the best class here...im trying to stay away from a one mind set class, as im playing two personas, i need to be able to have a cohort that wont comprimise that. Im all set with a bard or rogue as i have the socialite status all set, and thier hps and melee prowess (in terms of damage takers) lack. Knowing this im looking for a versitile class that would meld with mine so perfectly, it would make my DM cry. the only book he isnt allowing is ToB. any other classes are acceptable (my allignment is LN). |
| InkBlot07-06-07, 10:45 PM | Brain Lock is OK. I mean, you're taking your enemy out of the battle, but you're taking yourself out of the battle as well. It gives your allies a chance to wail on the bad guy. You just have to watch out that the badguy's allies don't wail on you. Read thoughts might be good. From the description of your character, it sounds like something that might come in handy. And remember that it's pretty easy to hide the fact that you're manifesting. You can always hide the displays with a concentration check. Then it'll just look like you're staring off into space for a moment. And remember that people only notice they had to make a will save if they fail it. What im going with this character as far as OoB/OoC (out of battle/out of combat, wasnt sure those were abbreviations here or not) I've seen both those used commonly on these boards, but with different definitions. OoB stands for Order of the Bow (Initiate) and OoC stands for Out of Character. |
| KalTorak07-06-07, 10:58 PM | Figured Emapthy would suffice...it does it within 30 feet to anyone i can see...i could possibly go for read thoughts...but would like to keep brain lock, just incase the opposing wizard fails his will, i could get lucky...plus we have an evil psion in the party., granted hes in the party, hes evil, and i would need to shut him down if necessary. |
