Manifest an Unknown Power from Another’s Powers Known [Archive] - Wizards Community

I just read the description on "Manifest an Unknown Power from Another’s Powers Known" over an over.
In a certain way I would read it as such that a psion can actually repeatedly use a power stone to use the power in the stone.

My understanding is such that a psion can actually use a power that he does not know but that is on his list e.g. a level 1 power from a stone when he has a couple of rounds time and succeeds in 3x DC 16 psicraft checks.

This then leads me to the strategy to not learn the long term buffs from level 1 but just buy a stone with it.
Just buy a inertial armor stone and spend 3x DC16 psicraft checks to manifest from that stone without depleting it in the morning. Do that every day.

Am I right? :confused:

A power stone stores a power (or collection of powers). A stored power can be used only once, “flushing” the stone. Using a power stone is basically like manifesting a power.

On page 168 XPH says you need to adress the stone once with a DC15+ psicraft check and then after that you can just use it once.

I never really got into the stuff on page 64 where this description is that explains how you can use people and powerstones to manifest from them.
At first I thought the link to power stones was just referencing but here you require THREE psicraft checks to do something. So it must be something different. It also states that here you use your own power points. And it does NOT say you deplete the stone.
So it must be what I wrote: a nice extension of my power list if I have the time and the psicraft skill.

The final paragraph, the one that states how you can manifest the power using your own power points, only applies to using "another willing psionic character or creature." It's right there in the first sentance.

The rest of the process does hold true for power stones. When you use a power stone, you do have to hold it first hold it for a round, then make a DC 15 + power level Psicraft check. The difference is in the final step. With a power stone, once you make that first check you're good to use the stone for the rest of forever. With plucking powers from another person's head, you have to make one more check and then only have 1 round to manifest that power.

06-03-07, 05:18 AM Complete Psionic actually addressed this issue via revision in a sidebar on page 105: Manifesting Powers from Power Stones.

In the revision it states (last sentence): Using a power stone in this way expends the power within the stone.

Even the revision doesn't clear up whether the power is still expended on an unsuccessful attempt. I assume it is expended after any attempt, but it isn't really crystal clear (no pun intended).

Yet another ball dropped by Complete Psionic. :(

06-03-07, 05:56 AM I have heard of this "use a power stone without depleting it", without buying Complete Psionic, was there some official errata on this thus making it crystal clear? I know there is an errata for XPH but it doesn't seem to mention this.

06-03-07, 06:50 AM Yeah, basically it is now Complete-ly settled that MUPAPK from a power stone flushes it. But MUPAPK is still a good strategy for increasing the powers you have available with the Leadership feat. Go for a psionic cohort that you can keep somewhere safe (such as on your own demiplane) and go to him when you need to reset your contingency, identify something, use psychic reformation etc. Have him be a cerebremancer with mental pinnacle and let him take bestow power so he can recharge your PP to boot!
