Well as I keep reading through this book I keep getting more questions. I was wondering what the advantage of the metamind prestige class. As far as I can tell even if you add up the power points from the free manifestations and the ones you can store in your psicrystal he still gets less power points than a psion.

So all I see is a prestige class that lowers your max PP, lowers your max power levels, and causes you to lose the psions bonus feats.

Is font of power really good enough to justify 10 levels in this class?

No. No-one with any experience with psionics even considers the Metamind. The favoured slogan for its capstone is "suck for free, one minute per day". The loss of ML is too great for any useful effect. Back in 3.0, when psionic feats ran off pp, a psywar might consider a few levels of metamind to let them do some actual stuff. In 3.5, the only thing it was ever good for is gone, so it's no good.

No. There's no reason to take the meta-mind. The loss of 5 manifester levels is simply too great.

There's EVERY reason to take Metemind...somewhere after your 50th level when you've run out of other interesting options, while in a Gestalt game, and in which there are no epic prestige classes available for psionic characters. By that point, the 'suck for free' won't suck so much, but rather be quite impressive. Nothing else in the class will be of interest, of course, but by then a ten level-investment might not be such a big deal when otherwise your only significant abilities are originating from feats that do not directly impact your class functioning.

As I recall, there's a power-- Temporal Reiteration?-- that causes the current round not to count for the duration of ongoing effects on you. If you don't need to sleep, and you don't have anything better to do with your Swift action, then you can effectively make Font of Power last forever, for infinite PP.

Most people don't even consider that worth the bother, even if they can begin play with ten Metamind levels.

You know a class is bad when you can nova for an infinite amount of time and STILL suck.

Maybe metamind would be considered nonassociated.. that could be a reason to use it, for the dm ;)

Metaminds are BROKEN! Seriously, EVERYONE knows that psions are TOTALLY brokes, because I heard that a friend of a friend of someone on the Interweb was DMing a campaign with a psion in it, and he, like, totally KILLED A KOBOLD! AT LEVEL 20! BECAUSE HE DID 343d10 DAMAGE WITH A MIND THRUST! And the Metamind lets you kill kobolds for free!

Er... yeah.

Anyway, the Metamind does suck. The only way to make the class viable is to rework it completely (which has spawned many other threads in it's own right).

My proposed fixes:
- Give them the Improved Caster Level (Ex) ability of the Green Star Adept PrC from Complete Arcane, but call it Improved Manifester Level (Ex) instead.
- Give them a fixed number of bonus pp/metamind level, in addition to the pp granted by the effective manifester level increases. Say, +10 pp at every level. Sort of following the same rationale as how the Dragon Disciple PrC grants bonus spell slots without improving spellcasting ability.
- Grant them some extra special class ability at the mid to low levels... like being able to drain a cognizance crystal to directly replenish his pp pool or something.

Or you could ditch the ridiculous "Free Manifesting" ability and just give them more manifester levels.

From what I understand the hyperconscious variant works quite well, in the least its cooler.

It makes use of a feat in the book called Sequester Power, essential by voluntarily knowing less powers that day you can get more PP.

And it has 7/10 manifesting, I believe.

yes, back in the days when inertial armor was a feat. heh...if you really didn't need the feats, you could make one helluva ac buff. Granted, the trade off was keeping your pp's above a certain amount. So if you used a psion to do it, you'd have to either restort to beating things with a stick, or similar things.

The main advantage of the Metamind - IF you accept PP recharge - is it gets PP recharge via one class feature and one power. This is the least amount of class infrastructure necessary to pull off recharge.

Metamind can be enterred one level early by That Feat In Cityscape; retrain it away the next level.
PHB2 class level rebuilding can be done at 11th level. Since your only reason for being a Metamind is recharge, you already accept the recharge premise. With an earlier recharge setup, an 11th level semi-Psion should be able to defeat d4 CR 11 and 3 CR 14 encounters. Once done, you are a Psionic class 1 / Metamind 10. Beware of maintaining qualifications.
Extend Spell-like Ability lets Font of Power last 20 rounds.
This allows for 19, instead of 9, non Temporal Reiterated swift or immediate actions throughout the day.

A Cleric/Ardent with Psiotheurgist should delay til 12th level.

That statement might be more useful if we knew more about the feat in question.

only use I can think of is for an Illithid Savant to eat a metamind's brain for font of power and one of Demogorgon's (or an aspect of his) brains for Dual Actions.

And even that is, if used very well, only just worth it, IMO.

If you plan on going into epic, taking metamind all the way through at level 17 could be worth it, providing you don't need those 3 levels for a build.

Hey, is there some sort of hall of shame for "worst designed rules item" somewhere? I think metamind wins the PrC category hands down. I'd nominate it together with that feat that lets you play a paladin/bard multiclass character if you are one already (i forget the name).

I haven't memorized the Bible yet. D&D is more rules than the Bible. I haven't memorized the D&D rules yet.

I do know how to Epic Divination the answer. Material component is Acting Clueless.
No wait, it just Epic Summons (Slagger the Chuul).

Retrain away Favoured feat, too. Then withdraw from whatever Guild you were in, to save some money on car insurance.
This just to prove you are neither a Stormwind Fallacier, nor a fan of Cartoon chase scenes. ;)

(2) - Isn't the Paladin/Bard called the Divine Mind ?

If one uses a Metamind within an Affinity field, Bestow Power recharges all.
That's pretty good stuff right there.

Let's see those weeny Wizards do that.

so instead of being useless for one minute every day for free, you become a battery for one minute every day.

One of my players is currently a multi-class Bard/Paladin using that feat, and he's actually being surprisingly useful. :uh-huh:
Of course, I ignore the alignment restrictions on almost everything, so maybe that's what you mean? Because, yeah, that's kinda silly in that context... :P

There is one time I've used meta-mind.

I gave a fully advanced aboleth metamind levels, along with psion levels and some weird PrC they have in Lords of MAdness, I forget which. Plus Practiced Manifester.

I'd have to searh my notes, but his manifester levels was only one or two lower than his CR, due to how non-associated classes mix with advancing hit dice.

He was, in my game, the oldest living organism on the planet, and acted as sort of an oracle for any being that could reach his city at the deepest part of the ocean. Odd fellow, kept referring to the PCs by their (ficitious) species name rather than their actual names.

So, it seems like it might work ... if you could pile Metamind onto a Psionic Healer with Temporal Reiteration, Schism, Overchannel, Pratcied Manifester, and the feat to let him regenerate spell slots in people for PP ...

... as a cohort for a caster.

Metamind might be good for Erudites in epic, as Erudites learn powers from sources other than levelling. Or a Psion with a power-learning ability like Psychic Cheriurgy (I can't spell it :P).

Erudite 20/Metamind 10, Practiced Manifester. ML29. And it doesn't even require you take Psicrystal Affinity (take Practiced Manifester instead - so you're about on par in terms of feats anyway). You still gain 9th level powers, and even though your manifester level is one lower than a full manifester (and you have 8 less powers known), I expect you'd be able to nova a little longer. And with Temporal Reiteration and Font of Power at 30... those epic creatures will have a hard time getting rid of you. And you still have Epic Powers, just less feats. Prepare to suck a little more between 22-28, though. No worthy class features or bonus feats :( The free manifestations are flavor abilities at this point, and Cognisize Psicrystal gives you a total of 11pp - not even enough for one fully augmented power. Would this be playable in epic?

I think Metamind is the Warhulk of Psionics. Sucks most of the time until you take it past epic.

Am I reading Temporal Reiteration right that once you activated it, you'd basically have to spend a swift action every round on Temporal Reiteration to keep it perpetuating indefinitely, but if you wanted to do that, it would be possible until you screwed it up?

Or fell asleep (play a warforged), but yes. Pay no power points for powers, ever, at the cost of never having a swift or immediate action.

This was discovered the same day CPsi came out, by the way.

(I am *so* tempted to take a clip out of Blue Man Group's Earth To America (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QM-mfEMssy8) to explain metamind advantages in one sentence: "As you can see... there aren't any." However, I lack video editing software on this computer and BMG material is notoriously hard to find outside of video.)

Extend Spell-like Ability lets Font of Power last 20 rounds.
This allows for 19, instead of 9, non Temporal Reiterated swift or immediate actions throughout the day.

Font of Power lasts for 10 rounds.
Temporal Reiteration "saves" one round for the cost of one Swift action.
So, you can not TR a total of 9 rounds, but still keep the Font going.
Extend Sp-like makes a total of 19 rounds ...

Don't forget the 3 free uses per 1st level power clause. Good for Erudites.

That actually doesn't bother me as much as his questionable interpretation of the rules, like the time he used class rebuilding to replace levels he used to qualify for a prestiege class with levels of the prestiege class.

CD , your interpretation of PHB2 class rebuilding, is accurate as far as the 3rd paragraph goes, of the class rebuilding article. Lucky for me, the 4th paragraph includes some more information. At the last sentence, actually the last third of the last sentence, the text clearly indicates, a rebuilding can render a PrC temporarily unqualified for. The text says you can then or later requalify for the "useless" PrC levels, with whatever class it is that you take.

An example would be: Wizard 8 / PrC 2
then a rebuild into ..... Wizard 6 / X 2 / PrC "2" with the PrC non-functional
then gaining 1 level ... Wizard 6 / X 3 / PrC 2 with the PrC functional now

Hey, the text says what it says, I'm only using it to help the pathetic Metamind.

Further afield, is the simple question of the PrC "2" when it is non-functional.
Wizard 6 / X 2 / PrC "2" , is a 10 HD creature.
Just because 2 of it's levels don't work, doesn't mean it suddenly doesn't have those 2 HD.
This is a grey zone of the rules.
I'd give a Human, 2 HD of humanoid levels; effectively 2 levels of Commoner.
Some of the feats would still work.
Less of the skills would still work.
Fewer hit points. Etc ...
Just until the PrC gets requalified for.
