Dark Sun ... as settings on their list! immediately countered by And the fact that a setting is "on the list" shouldn't be taken as "Wizards is definitely publishing this setting." It just means the setting is on the list for possible future use. we have a maybe ... |
| Scion of Coldshard04-30-08, 07:11 PM | hmm.. points of light.. Dark Sun + Eberron.. a long, long time ago in the land of dark sun 3 nearly all-powerful draconic godlings were cast into a bottomless abyss... their struggle over one another in the darkness was mighty indeed and from it the land of eberron was born.. Athas was already sealed away from any true gods but some have found a way to pierce the viel into eberron so very slightly.. The land of the dead is the route to the eternal bottomless abyss.. long forgotten and impossible to find if you are trying to find it there is a way out into Athas.. as long as you have less power than a godling. |
| Jaid04-30-08, 07:11 PM | yes, well... do you *really* want WotC to Forgotten Realms your favorite campaign setting anyways? honestly, i could care less if they publish the setting, because the setting already exists and can be bought in PDF format for a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new campaign setting book. frankly, i trust myself to modify specific rules to fit dark sun more than i trust WotC to... or, to put it another way, will WotC be more likely to modify the rules for dark sun, or to modify dark sun for the rules? (and like i said, let's not forget what happened to forgotten realms. now i personally happen to think forgotten realms could have done well with a simple 'rocks fall, everyone dies' policy, but if that was a setting i actually cared about? that would suck). so yeah, to be honest... i'm not actually rooting very hard for WotC to publish my favorite campaign settings. it would be much more accurate to say that i'm hoping for WotC to publish rules that could be used for my favorite campaign settings (for example, i don't want them to make Spelljammer; i want them to make a book with good rules for airships that i could totally *steal* to use for Spelljammer ship combat. i don't want them to make Birthright; i just want them to design some viable rules for large-scale war and running kingdoms which i could then steal for use in a Birthright game. and i don't want them to publish Dark Sun; i want them to provide a wide selection of abilities for classes that i could reflavor to fit dark sun, psionics rules, and probably environment rules for deserts a la sandstorm. but if they don't touch Dark Sun itself, i wouldn't be upset in the slightest. i'll just keep on buying the old material as PDFs for a few dollars each, thank you very much... ) |
| JohnnyArkham04-30-08, 07:26 PM | Jaid, I'm with you all the way. That's precisely what I'm hoping as well. However...I have a feeling that our hopes will be dashed upon the rocks of profitability. More setting books will equate to more money. But...that's not all bad. I'm old enough to have enjoyed SpellJammer and Dark Sun, but perhaps a new gamer hasn't had the pleasure. There's always an upside. |
| Salla04-30-08, 10:50 PM | I, personally, hope that the presence of psionics is not dependent on the publishing of Dark Sun. A psionic power source book, I'll buy. Dark Sun? Mmmmno. Didn't like it. |
| AntiDjinn05-01-08, 01:25 AM | They could be listing Athas as a potential setting only to make it clear it is off limits to 3rd party developers, yet have no intention of releasing it. They already did this once: Killed a web Darksun project for 3.0/3.5 and never did anything with it beyond a single issue of the Dragon. |
| Tsuul05-01-08, 03:57 AM | They already did this once: Killed a web Darksun project for 3.0/3.5...http://athas.org/ lives. |
| cnahumck05-01-08, 11:47 AM | It lives well. Check out the links in my sig to see some of the ways we have both updated and slightly expanded things. And, yes, we are official. |
