| Vasily06-04-07, 08:44 PM | Hi, I don't know a whole lot about Psionics, so I was hoping someone might be willing to help me with this. Basically, could someone who knows a lot about the 3.5 Psionic rules tell me what I would need to do in order to make a Psionicist that basically has Jedi powers? Force push Force grab Improved Jumping Improved Speed (Running and reflexes) Total Blind fighting Mind Control Telepathic messaging If I missed any, let me know. Do you think there are too many powers to truly have something like a Jedi? Thank you very much for your help! |
| Eldritch_Lord06-04-07, 09:15 PM | A lot of these can be covered (at least to a limited extent) by powers: Force push Force grab telekinetic force (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/telekineticForce.htm) telekinetic maneuver (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/telekineticManeuver.htm) telekinetic thrust (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/telekineticThrust.htm) Improved Jumping Any powers improving: --Strength (for example, psychofeedbacj (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/psychofeedback.htm)) --speed (for example, hustle (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/hustle.htm)) Improved Speed (Running and reflexes) hustle (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/hustle.htm) Any reflex-increasing power Total Blind fighting Not so much. Mind Control Almost any Telepathy power Telepathic messaging missive (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/missive.htm) missive, mass (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/missiveMass.htm) minklink (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/mindlink.htm) That should get you started. |
| Noodles237506-04-07, 09:23 PM | This is a topic particularly near and dear to my heart :) Approaches that I like: Force Push/Force Grab: These can be satisfied with the 3rd lvl psion powers telekinetic thrust, and telekinetic force. You can find 'em in the SRD. Improved Jumping: Mental Leap (psionic feat) Improved Speed: Speed of thought, Up the Walls (both psy-feats) to get the speed/manuverability. Dode, and Psionic dodge can give u the reflexes sort of stuff. Plus a high dex :). Total Blindfighting: Psion power, 3rd lvl, Touchsight. It gives u a telekinetic field that works as eyes, you don't have to see anything, but you automatically make all listen and spot checks and know the location of anything within a certain radius of you. Sooooo jedi-esque :) Mind Control: Psion powers. Take telepathy discipline. Choose suggestion, charm person, mind probe, dominate person (if you're a dark jedi!) , read thoughts, detect hostile intent, modify memory, levitation. Telepathic Messaging: Missive (its also a psion power) In this vein, some of my fav psion powers for jedi making follow: 1st: Charm person, Force Screen, Off. Precognition, VIgor, Detect Psionics 2nd: Read thoughts, suggestion, Detect hostile intent, levitation 3rd: TK thrust, TK Force, Body adjustment, Budy Purification, Touch Sight 4th: Modify Memory, Energy Adaptation, Intellect Fortress, freedom of movment 5th: Mind probe, Adapt Body, True Seeing The best route, I think, to this sort of character is to use a mix of ToB and Psionics. Warblade/Psion is a great Synergy. If your DM will help you build a multiclass patch class for psionics/ToB (there are two great examples, Jade Phoenix mage and Ruby Knight Vindicator in the ToB) I would recommend something like Warblade 8/ Psion 2/ PatchClass 10. Patchclass should get you 8/10 manifesting or so which should get you some cool up to 5th level psion powers. Your warblade-ness will give you the jedi combat prowess, especially if you take lots of Diamond Mind and Iron Heart manuevers. Let me know if any of this is helpful or if you want advice on a PatchClass's abilities and stuff. |
| BloodyChariot06-04-07, 10:25 PM | Total blindfighting is totally touchsight. I suggest suggestion if you ever wanted to tell anyone that these aren't the droids they're looking for. I don't think I've ever seen anyone dominated or charmed, though. The limited forms of mind control I remember seeing were more like suggestion than domination or charm. Notice how the Jedi integrated it into their suggestions (for lack of a better word, haha); if they were capable of charming or dominating, they would've completely foregone words. When the characters in Star Wars got mental messages, they could often respond and interact with whomever sent them the message (granted, the senders were dead, but...). I think correspond would be a good messaging power in addition to missive. The range issue is important too. Also, I don't remember groups of people getting mental messages, and I certainly don't remember a Jedi acting as a communication network. I wouldn't suggest mindlink or missive, mass. You didn't ask, but definately get the precognitions. Aside from that, everything Eldritch_Lord said. EDIT: Don't get energy adaptation (what's this about Anakin burning alive, lol?). Maybe get crisis of breath to better emulate Vader's force choke. I don't think any other power can deliver the same effect. Energy ray or energy current might be the best power for Palpatine's electricity thing (I'm more or less convinced the "disfigurement" was just a lack of foresight on Lucas's part: when other characters used it in cannon fiction or when Palpatine used it again, it had no effect on the user). Control object (duh), control body (duh again) and reddopsi (Windu returning Palpatine's electrical attack) were all used too. Yoda was capable of levitation. Conceivably he could just use a self-imposed limited version of fly. It's improbably a Jedi would know every power of every other Jedi. Many powers are unique, and many more Jedi are simply incapable of learning every form of force power in their lifetimes. |
| Noodles237506-04-07, 11:58 PM | Just an aside, My motivation for the energy adaptation was Vader's ability to absorb/dissipate energy with his hands (pesky blaster bolts!) also Corran Horn and the whole Halcyon bloodline if you're interested in expanded universe stuff is alllllll about the energy adaptation. :) Also the two cloud mind powers for sneaking about, making ppl forget you. Aura sight (I sense the darkside in you...) Concussion blast (its soooo like a giant force hit in the face) are all great power choices as well. Bloody Chariot made a great point with the precognition powers. Def, off, precognition and prescience are all cool choices for the combat oriented jedi. |
| TheKeyofE06-05-07, 12:47 AM | This is kind of a derail, but I don't care. I'm saying it anyway. Kalashtar (from the Eberron Campaign Setting) are very Jedi-ish. - They're very ascetic, having minimal possessions, simple dwellings, and tending to not form strong attachments. - They're very altruistic, always striving for a greater good with little reward or recognition. - They focus on using their minds to accomplish amazing or "magical" things most can only dream of. (Psions) - Their warriors (Soulknives) carry blades made of pure energy. (AKA Lightsabers) - They meditate often. - They prefer simple clothing and loose robes. - They keep a tight rein on their emotions, and they require strong self discipline to maintain balance. I could come up with more comparisons if I really thought hard about it. /derail |
| Melayl06-05-07, 01:04 AM | You might also look at the Luminae (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6390653&postcount=146) PrC. |
| hovnarr06-05-07, 08:06 AM | Vasily! It so happens that I recently made a psychic warrior variant with a more strictly jedi-ish feel to it. Check it out: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=852201 It can master all typical powers of a jedi using 3.5 psionics mechanics, which means it still blends right into the D&D environment. How you wish to solve more technological flavor issues such as the light saber is up to you, but I'd recommend a brilliant energy sword. |
| Korlall06-05-07, 08:22 AM | For what I know, Star Wars the Pen and Paper game has been transformed to adapt the D20 system. So that means you can freely take the rules from Star Wars game and put in into dungeon and dragons... I already made this for an easter Egg game in which a SG-Team (Stargate) came to visit the village in which the player were.... Using the classes/equipement/skills/feats from SG-1 RPG game (d20 system also). Worked great |
| Vasily06-05-07, 11:20 AM | Thanks, everybody, for your help and input. I wanted so see if this would be possible before I actually bought the XPH. To be honest, I've never heard of Patchclasses - is that a term that the D&D books use? Unfortunatley, the group I play with forbids anything that's not in one of the rule books, so I don't think I'll be able to use any of the individually-made Classes or Prestige Classes; they looked cool nonetheless! We do have one campaign in Eberron, so I will definitely look more closely at Kalashtar. Thanks again! |
| Archangel_Arcanis06-05-07, 11:24 AM | this is a psi/ToB patch class that might fit. I don't think they ever finished it but it is just about there. we were just discussing clarity on issues. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=828188 |
| InkBlot06-05-07, 02:35 PM | To be honest, I've never heard of Patchclasses - is that a term that the D&D books use? Patchclass (which I hadn't heard of either) isn't used in any book I know of. It just refers to classes, like the Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster, which combine two previous existing classes or character roles. |
| Noodles237506-05-07, 05:45 PM | Inkblot is on the money, patch class is just a multiclass "patch" like Eldritch Knight or arcane trickster. Keep in mind ( no pun intended) all of the contents of the XPH are available online for free at the System Reference document. No flavor text but it sounds like you are more interested in mechanics anyway. Check it out! http://www.d20srd.org/ |
| Surgo06-05-07, 09:33 PM | This question comes up so much and the right answer keeps being missed so much that it really should be linked in the FAQ. The Luminae is the best "psionic jedi" PrC that I've ever seen, and is a damn well-designed PrC period (sadly fallen into the archive): http://boards1.wizards.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-439562 |
| metatheurgist06-06-07, 01:00 AM | 1st: Charm person, Force Screen, Off. Precognition, VIgor, Detect Psionics Offensive Precog! Whatever happened to a Jedi uses the Force to protect and defend! Methinks you are trying to lead him down a Dark Path Darth Noodles :) |
| Drausktanchache06-06-07, 10:35 AM | I think to make a worthy jedi with psionics would involve psion/soulknife multi-class. |
| BloodyChariot06-06-07, 12:44 PM | Why a soulknife? |
| InkBlot06-06-07, 12:49 PM | Soulknife? Realy? I didn't know that Jedi used swords that were made out of pure thought solidified, but cut like a normal sword and could take any form they could imagine. I thought that in order to become a Jedi, you had to craft a mechanical/electrical device which produces a constant burning shaft of energy. Sorry to be so sarcastic. I'm so sick of people thinking a mindblade is anything like a lightsaber, just because the illustration in the XPH kind of sort of looks like one. Sarcasm seems to get through to people sometimes. A lightsaber, in D&D terms, would be a wand or rod of flame blade. Flame Blade Evocation [Fire] Level: Drd 2 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: 0 ft. Effect: Sword-like beam Duration: 1 min./level (D) Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: Yes A 3-foot-long, blazing beam of red-hot fire springs forth from your hand. You wield this bladelike beam as if it were a scimitar. Attacks with the flame blade are melee touch attacks. The blade deals 1d8 points of fire damage +1 point per two caster levels (maximum +10). Since the blade is immaterial, your Strength modifier does not apply to the damage. A flame blade can ignite combustible materials such as parchment, straw, dry sticks, and cloth. The spell does not function underwater. |

| Noodles237506-06-07, 09:16 PM | Offensive Precog! Whatever happened to a Jedi uses the Force to protect and defend! Methinks you are trying to lead him down a Dark Path Darth Noodles :) hahahaha! Well if I was I assure you it wasn't intentional..... :) Seriously, off. precog is amazing for offsetting the penalties of combat expertise. Or even for power attack for that matter (when used to attack an opponents weapon of course!). Its basically "battlemind" from the star wars rpg game so I felt it was good to include it. That being said in DnD we do have def. precog so there is certainly a case to be made for that being a bit lighter-side in nature than off. precog. |
| BalthazarDArgent06-07-07, 12:06 AM | I really wanted to post on this, but after reading the thread there is nothing to add. Good job guys. So instead, here is what I did when I asked myself the same question...but of course I chose the darker path...muh ha ha ha... It's in Eberoon so I use a Klashtar for the reason given above. I used a couple of levels of Fighter mixed with Psion then Elocator. The fighter is the martial aspect of a Jedi (and also needed to qualify for the Elocater (PsyWar works too). The Elocater emulates the quickness and fluidity of movement; the Psion, his powers. Power Points are the Force (the midichlorins (sp) if you will). In pure Jedi terms, the Telepath seems like the classic way to go...Egoist is also very useful and in sync with the flavor. I went with Telepath as I'm more into the "these are not the droids you're looking for" rather than a hit 5 times a round dual lightsaber badass (hmmm...a psychic warrior dervish sounds like a tasty Darth Maul). I delight in changing peoples minds, TK bull rushing opponents, firing electric blasts from my fingertips, squeezing the breath out of a helpless minion. I also have the big stick once per round precision strike lightsaber smack of an Episode 6 Darth Vader (Crystal Greatsword with Power Storing (NRG Ray for F/X). He's also quickly become my favorite character to run. Evil feels good. |
