I've created a new use for the Autohypnosis skill for a homebrew campaign which makes heavy use of the Region of Dreams (from MotP):

-----

Shallow Sleeping: You can attempt to use the Autohypnosis skill to sleep much more lightly than you otherwise could. Make a DC 15 Autohypnosis check when you fall asleep. A successful check indicates that you do not enter the Region of Dreams while sleeping (and do not create a dreamscape on that plane), though you retain all other benefits of sleeping. A failed check indicates that you enter the Region of Dreams as normal. You cannot attempt this skill if you are forced unconscious by an undesired effect or condition.

Additionally, the penalty you suffer to Listen checks made while shallow sleeping is reduced to -5, instead of the usual -10 penalty.*

-----

The thing is, I'm not sure where to set the DC. I want to make it something that not everyone can do, so the "trained only" Aspect of autohypnosis makes sense to me. Any opinions?

*I allow characters the chance to make a Listen check at a -10 penalty to wake up if they hear a "suspicious" sound while sleeping.

[Edit]
DC edited to 15. Removed "or become unconscious" from end of 2nd sentence. Added last line to 1st paragraph.

Neat.

I can make myself sleep lightly, although I still dream. I've also never done it all night, so I don't know if I'd eventually slip into deeper sleep or if it would be as restful as deeper sleep.

Since everyday but nontrivial things are usually DC10, I'd put Sleep Shallow at about DC15. Maybe DC17.

Seems reasonable. I've been awakened by unusual noises before. (But apparently I just rolled well; I have a rather poor Listen check IRL, and I've slept through more than one hurricane.)

Actually that's a rule right out of the PHB. I only really put it there as a reminder (since it honestly doesn't seem to come up very often for me.)

Anyway, I think I'll set the DC at 15 then.

I can't see any way this use of autohypnosis could be "broken," but that's just another reason I put it in here. I figured maybe if there's a way to break it, someone in here would find it soon enough and let me know. So far so good.

[Edit]

Still not sure whether to allow this use of the skill for any event which renders a character unconscious, or just when they sleep at their own leisure. I may limit the skill so it doesn't work if you are knocked unconscious.

In an Eberron campaign which heavily features the Quori, every PC would want to put ranks in Autohypnosis. The only way to discourage that would be to raise the DC to 20 or higher, so it's only useful for those with Autohypnosis as a class skill and those with a high Wisdom score.

I'm not sure you'd want to discourage it though. I'm not sure what a Quori can do to you while it's in your dreams. You wouldn't want a game to end early because the Quori attacked the PCs every night in their dreams until they got a TPK.

So what can a Quori do to you in your dreams? What are the other ways in which PCs can protect their dreams from the Quori?

Well, I've never played an Eberron campaign, so alas.. I know little of Quori, just what I've heard. It does give food for thought though.

This campaign will contain "dream psychics," a psionic PrC I haven't completely fleshed out yet. They would pose a significant threat in the Region of Dreams if a PC ticked 'em off I suppose (though their original purpose is intended as being covert).

If anything it makes me not want to raise the DC, so that any PC who spends 2 skill points even at cross class would be afforded at least some protection from targeted "night terrors."
