Playing a thoughtsinger [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-30-07, 10:45 AM So in my roomie DMs next Eberron game I've decided I wanted to play a bard who's a melee skirmisher that also affects the field with bardsong (planning on taking haunting melody as soon as I qualify). Now I'd always disliked the whole spells per day idea and I wanted to be a Kalashtar for flavor purposes.

After poking around for a while I found this (http://bossythecow.com/TheThoughtsinger.pdf) (PDF Warning).

It's created by the creator of Eberron, so my DM OK'd it. But looking at the class, I'm wondering if it'll work OK for what I want. I'm planning on having him take the Antagonist Host Feat. Then at lvl3 Take the weapon focus Zulaat (for the beneficial second attacks).
My party is going to have 2 clerics, so we won't be short of healing, but I was wondering if this class choice would gimp me unnecessarily.

Anyone have any experience as a thoughtsinger?

07-30-07, 12:07 PM I have never played one but if you want to play it, Go for it. It is a solid class, PsyWar PP/Powers known-Very nice Power List for a bard. If you want to go into a bard PrC just convert it to manifesting class.

One more reason why Keith Baker is awesome. A Psionic X that doesnt just seem like one more Psionic X class.

08-28-07, 09:20 AM Aha, so my struggle has come into a snag, the game has started.
I'm playing a Kalashtar Thoughtsinger. So far so good but I'm having trouble with my planned progression.
Heres the base Idea.
Thoughtsinger up to 3/4
Something Dip for 1/2 levels
Slayer (d20 SRD) favoured enemy Quori (RP reasons).
Don't know what I'll do from there, finish out thoughtsinger for the emotional shield perhaps.

The problem is, for this to work, I need a class I can dip into with a full BAB. I've run through all the books I have looking for a choice, I'd like to stick with something that gains PP, and so far, nothing.

My question to the boards is, is there any full BAB psionic class in a Wizards published product?

Nope. Not in Wizards-published.

08-28-07, 10:01 AM As far as I know, there is only one psionic base class, which gives full BAB: the Divine Mind (Complete Psionics). It does not give decent manifesting powers, and is considered rather crappy at the boards.

The following PrCs have full BAB:

Slayer (XPH) (9/10 manifesting)
War Mind (XPH)
Sanctified Mind (Lords of Madness) (5/6 manifesting)
Ghostbreaker (Hyperconscious, Malhavoc Press) (5/5 manifesting)

The list may not be complete. I know there are more PrCs in Hyperconscious with full BAB, but I can't recall the names.

To qualify for Slayer, you'll need the track feat. Take one or two levels as ranger and take the Practiced Manifester feat. It at least adds bonus pp for a high ability score for the dead levels.

08-28-07, 10:14 AM The Divine Mind has 3/4 BAB, not full, one more reason why it's a crappy class.

Dreamscarred Press has quite a few full BAB classes (including a base class), but the OP asked for Wizards-published classes :)

08-28-07, 10:26 AM Yeah, My DM insists on wizards only material. It's probably a good idea to some extent. I might be able to convince him that Dreamscarred would be OK though.

War Mind looked good, but the Knowledge Psi 8 and the fact that I'm Chaotic make it a no go
I'll have to dig around my friend's collection for a copy of lords of madness to check out Sanctified mind.

I hadn't considered ranger for a dip, but I guess it would be OK. I'd have to change my flavor a bit though.

Remember that you can change the flavor of the ranger, you don't have to change the flavor of your character :)

I'm DM'ing a game where a player is using a good-flavored Warlock. Functionally the same - has "Divine Smite" instead of "Eldritch Blast", and the like, but functionally, it works the same.

The ranger could easily fit whatever flavor you want, just rename the class / abilities, but leave the mechanics the same.

08-29-07, 05:59 AM Why not just progress as thought singer until you can qualify for Slayer? Sure it'll probably take an extra level or two vs. dipping warblade or somesuch, but it'll mean a more solid build later.

08-29-07, 10:16 AM Because if I dip for level 5 I get something. I get nothing other than 1 more manifester level at 5 as a thoughtsinger.
If I get to Slayer 1 level earlier, I get more melee benefits, which is primarily what I'm using this character as (see OP).
