I don't have the ability to search the forums, so if this question has been asked, I am sorry........I can't find it. Nor does there appear to be a Complete Psionic errata file.

Basically it is this... on pg.33 of the Complete Psionic it states that the Illumine Souls has the ability to send a Positive Energy Ray that deals "2d6 points of damage for every class level you have." This is not very specific.Or I should say, it seems a little unbalanced to me.

Does this mean my Soulknife 5/Illumine Soul 4 can do 18d6 damage when using Positive Energy Ray and do this 4 times a day?

Or does this mean he can only do 8d6 damage based on his Illumine class levels?

I haven't checked the SRD for this info yet.....that is where I am headed next.

Thanks!

Generally, when a base or prestige class mentions "class levels," it refers to levels in the class giving the ability in question. Granted, "2d6 points of damage for every class level you have" is an interesting way to phrase it, but I believe this means "2d6 points of damage per level in illumine soul you possess," so you would deal 8d6 damage with your example character.

Eldritch Lord is correct. It's per level of the class that granted the ability, meaning positive energy ray and positive energy flare cap at 10d6 each. (The latter is at its maximum the level you get it.)

Just to clarify that, when a class is referring to levels in other classes, it either mentions the other classes by name, or uses "character level" to refer to the total of your levels in all classes.

Unless you take a bloodline (since bloodline levels stack with any class level you have for the purpose of determining level-dependent variables). An Illumine Soul with a Major bloodline could deal up to 16d6 damage with a positive energy ray (10d6 from 5 levels of Illumine Soul and 3d6 from 3 levels of a major bloodline).

While I would tend to agree with Eldritch_Lord, Teop left out the next line of the description of positive energy ray; which was pivital in this exact same discussion with our DM last night.

"The Illumine Soul can create a Positive Energy Ray a number of times equal to his Illumine Soul Level." Why would it discuss their CLASS level in 1 sentence then specify their Illumine Soul Class Level in the next?

Our DM also plays as well and he won an arguement based on this fact. So he allowed the Illumine Soul in our party to deal 14d6 damage to a Lich (Soul Knife 5/Illumine Soul 2).

I do agree that it is over powering as well; but since the book stated class level then called out the illumine soul class specifically for the number of times it could preform this action; that's why he ruled the way he did.

Just my 2 cents though.

Well, your DM is wrong, as far as RAW go. He can rule any way he likes, but I'm not sure why he'd rule in favor of brokenness. 'Twas bad wording on the part of the book, but it doesn't change the fact that both of those phrases refer to the number of levels in the illumine soul prestige class.

I don't think it's bad wording at all. When a class feature refers to "class level", it always refers to levels in the class that grant the class feature. If an ability intends to include your levels in all classes, it says "character level" or "hit dice".

I meant that it was bad wording to refer to it one time as just 'class level' and the other time as 'illumine soul class level', when they are both really referring to the same thing.

The bit that always got me on that was the limit on the ray, but not the emanation - 10d6 to all undead around you, as much as you like vs hitting one more than 30ft away from you 5/day.

Costs my focus and has a low DC save for half.

Yeah, but (no but...) What about psionic meditation? (and 5d6 / round to multiple targets is still pretty nifty)

Positive energy flare also provokes AoOs. Like any psi-like ability, though, you can attempt to use it defensively. Since the ability is most useful when you've been mobbed by a horde of undead, it's probably best to keep that in mind.

I don't have a problem with the wording at all. Class level is level of the class you're getting the ability from. Character level is the sum of all levels your character has. "Illumine Soul Class Level" is a way to keep the author from becoming monotonous. The interpretation as it was decided, just sounds like willful misinterpretation to me.
