Can a psicrystal actually attack on it's own? It has bab but it doesn't have a listed attack. I'm only trying to use it to use the "Aid another" option but the DM says that since it can't attack to make the DC 10 attack check it can't aid my character. Any thoughts?

What skill are you trying to use with Aid Another that has an attack roll?

You can help another character achieve success on his or her skill check by making the same kind of skill check in a cooperative effort. If you roll a 10 or higher on your check, the character you are helping gets a +2 bonus to his or her check, as per the rule for favorable conditions. (You can’t take 10 on a skill check to aid another.) In many cases, a character’s help won’t be beneficial, or only a limited number of characters can help at once.
In cases where the skill restricts who can achieve certain results you can’t aid another to grant a bonus to a task that your character couldn’t achieve alone.

Any creature can use an unarmed strike. Of course, it would help if the psicrystal had Improved Unarmed Strike, or if it were proficient with unarmed strikes.

What kind of psychic are you playing? There are many ways to give your psicrystal attacks, but their availability varies greatly by class, primary discipline, and mantle. For example, a psychic warrior can manifest claws of the beast on his little buddy to give it razor-sharp crystaline or ectoplasmic claws.

Edit: Bacris, I'm surprised you don't know this. Aid Another can be used to boost attack rolls and AC. Check it out on page 154 of the Player's Handbook.

After checking it out, it doesn't say anything about needing a weapon. If I were DMing, I'd say that you don't even need to be armed to Aid Another, but if you are then you can choose to use your weapon (which may help with the roll). At the very least, using Aid Another with an unarmed strike shouldn't provoke an attack of opportunity, since you're not actually attacking anybody. But I'm not your DM. Good luck!

I'm playing a straight psion (shaper) but his level 1 so I can't give him anything. I just wanted to help other characters in melee but I don't think that my DM will change his mind without and official ruling :(

Thanks anyway!

Intriguing... I don't think anybody in my entire group knew you could do that (but we frequently use Aid Another on other checks).

About psicristals, how much hp do they have?

You can have your psicrystal attempt to aid another. It would just face huge penalties and at least one attack of opportunity (it has to enter your foe's square in order to be close enough to threaten it).

Psicrystals have hardness 8 and AC 16, in addition to half your HP. Your psicrystal can survive melee at least as well as a 1st level Monk.

If you manifest a couple powers on your psicrystal (e.g., inertial armor and vigor), then it can surive melee at least as well as a 1st level Barbarian. Of course, you may ask "why spend power points on buffing my psicrystal when I could just whip up an astral construct?" You would be absolutely right to assume that those power points would be better spent on astral constructs.

edit: Another neat psicrystal trick for later levels: Manifest vigor on your psicrystal. Hand it to the party member most likely to take HP damage. Manifest share pain between that party member and your psicrystal. Instant portable HP battery!

Use Magic of Incarnum. Take a level-dip in totemist and the Share Soulmeld feat, and give your psicrystal a pair of claws. Actually, go to level 2 with totemist, take level 3 in psion and get Psicrystal Affinity and Share Soulmeld in one go. Unlike most other classes, meldshaping classes just might be worth the loss of a couple of manifester levels. :D

Any creature can use an unarmed strike.
That's not exactly true. According to the size table, a Medium character does 1d3 damage with an unarmed attack, a Small character does 1d2, a Tiny character does 1, and a Diminutive or smaller character doesn't have an effective unarmed attack.

See here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#weaponSize
(The table "Larger and Smaller Weapon Damage")

What I have done in the past is give my psicrystal barding and armor spikes. It's not proficient with armor spikes, but it's better than nothing (barely).

If a thousand Psions got together and had their psicrystals cooperating, do you think they could do a swarm attack?

For optimal psicrystal attacks use the shape soulmeld. (Only req is con 15)

Incarnaum weapon, acid spittle, actually there are tons to choose from any attacking incarnum power will do....

Then use take share soulmeld to manifest it on your animal companion, psicrystal, or soulspark.

Giving you a second attack through your psicrystal.

Not soulspark. They don't 'share spells', so it's a no-go. Otherwise, you're right on the money.

[edit] I've been wanting to try this on the Necrocarnum Circlet. Toss out a zombie army with a familiar, animal companion, psicrystal, and maybe a homunculus. Muahahahahahaha!

Just one, but you have to cast continual flame on it first. :rimshot:

One common tactic for psicrystals is to share Energy Conversion with your crystal, store a HUGE amount of energy in your crystal, and let it ride on your shoulder. With its telepathic sight it will detect many foes in 40' which you might not be aware of, and may blast away with ML x 3HP, 1/rd, ranged touch, energy damage. A free auto-cannon on your shoulder, at 13th level, for about 2 hrs (perhaps extended to 20 min/lv, or persistent with Hyperconscious). If you/the crystal are charged with different kinds of energy, it may switch the energy type, depending on target.

This costs 13pp plus the cost for the energy to be stored - i.e. 5 for a sonic energy wall or fire energy wall. I think, it's very cost efficient. Or you could store the energy damage of your breakfast campfire, or ask your dominated acid monster to spit on you.

If you allow the psicrystal to have feats, point blank shot/psionic shot/gr. psionic shot is a nice way to go: +1 to hit & dmg in 30', +4d6 to first ray. Or give it Split Psionic Ray to punch 2 targets for one focus. Psionic meditation is great for it too. 4d6+40 energy damage each round, for 18pp, and costs no actions on your part.

If you want to increase the damage even more, manifest metamorphosis (shared with crystal), metamorph it into a tiny creature not immune to mind, and share Schism with it. It doubles the attacks from the crystal.

Touchsight shared with the crystal is great for concealed/invisible foes, and mirror images or illusions are ignored by the critter (immune to mind-spells).

Psicrystals don't have any real advantages, vision-wise. Basically they have darkvision. And they don't ignore figments like mirror image or major image, either; those aren't mind-affecting spells.

It's still kind of a neat idea, though.

Can I transform my psicrystal into a astral construct with metaporphis?

Ooooh! Now I'm just waiting for someone to stat up the Psicrystal Swarm. Swarm traits, construct traits and hardness - all in the same creature. That might take some figuring out how to attack effectively. Sonic energy area effects? Sure, but what if your party doesn't have a psion?

Good question. Basically the psicrystal is a construct for purposes that depend on its type, and since metamorphosis depends on type to determine legal results, then yes your psicrystal can turn into an astral construct.

or because it shares energy conversion you could manifest energy wall around your enemies run in there and start making them have a very bad day.

Metamorphosis disallows ectoplasmic creatures, so no. You can do it with greater metamorphosis however.

I'd suggest turning your psicrystal into animated objects, especially if you have a limited number of forms to use. So. Very. Useful.

Actually you can

You assume the form of a creature of the same type as your normal form, or any other type except construct, elemental, outsider, and undead.

You can always assume a form of the same type as yourself. So the psicrystal can turn into a construct.

In reference to objects You also cannot take the form of a psionically animated mechanism or any object formed of ectoplasm.

However, you are not turning into an object, and there is no restriction on turning into an ectoplasmic creature.
Lycanthromancer

12-04-07, 11:39 AM
You can’t assume a form smaller than Fine, nor can you assume an incorporeal, ectoplasmic, or gaseous form. You cannot take the form of any creature that has a template. Your type and subtype (if applicable) change to match the new form.I beg to differ. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/metamorphosis.htm)

And even if you could do so (which you obviously can't), you don't get any of the menu options anyway (as they're special qualities), so you'd be better off with regular golems and animated objects (!) in any case.

So if you manifest Dissipating Touch through your own powers since it shares powers can it also strike your foe in the same round using it's shared powers?

Also can your psicrystal duplicate attacks, for example I attack with an energy ray while my psycrystal is on my shoulder, does it fire one two?

I manifest hammer, does it also do so?

I attack with a energy ray while it comes swooping in for a Dissipating Touch attack....

I do a melee strike while my psicrystal manifests a power?

Does any of the above work?

See my answers in your other post.

The short answer is that the only power that would also affect the psicrystal is Hammer, because it is an effect that targets you, rather than an effect that targets someone else. And your psicrystal doesn't have the capability to manifest powers until 21st level.

Ironically, I just posted this in that other thread...

Only the hammer idea (works).

It doesn't work if you use the errata.

Hammer
Psychometabolism
Level: Psion/wilder 1, psychic warrior 1
Display: Auditory and material
Manifesting Time: 1 swift action
Range: Touch
Duration: 1 round
Saving Throw: None
Power Resistance: Yes
Power Points: 1

This power charges your touch with the force of a sledgehammer. A successful melee touch attack deals 1d8 points of bludgeoning damage. This damage is not increased or decreased by your Strength modifier.

Augment: For every additional power point you spend, this power’s duration increases by 1 round.
