| Sunrider11-29-07, 08:34 PM | For those of us who love psionics, but who hate the thought of needing a 'pet rock' to live up to its full potential: Psychic Coccoon Prerequisites: Power point reserve. Benefit: You have used your mental abilities to create a psychic coccoon, a fragment of your mind separate from the rest, solely dedicated to your psionic abilities. This mental fragment may be used to hold a second psionic focus, in a similar vein to a psicrystal. Also, any power which may be shared with a psicrystal or which utilises a psicrystal (e.g. Solicit Psicrystal may instead use this psychic coccoon. Special: You may not take Psychic Coccoon if you already have Psicrystal Affinity. Similarly, you may not take Psicrystal Affinity after taking Psychic Coccoon. Any opinions? Obviously it lacks the mobility, delivery of touch-range powers of a psicrystal, but also lacks its vulnerability and does not require a second feat to hold a psionic focus. I noticed an earlier Dragon edition had an option for arcane spellcasters swapping their familiar for an imbued staff too (an option I took up in my campaign immediately!). |
| PurpleRain11-29-07, 09:17 PM | Why? Have you ever heard "If it's not broke don't fix it?" |
| Sunrider11-29-07, 09:44 PM | Flavour. The same reason Sorcerers were introduced when Wizards already existed, or that clerics don't all worship the same god. Many people simply don't see psicrystals/pet rocks as something particularly psionic. Honestly, how many prominent fictional psions (or characters with abilities which could be characterised as psionic) do you see carrying one around? Not Charles Xavier, not Emperor Palpatine, not anyone I can think of!Yet, as the rules currently stand, most psions who don't have one are doing themselves a serious disservice power-wise - no Solicit Psicrystal, no second focus, etc. Anyway, does it ever hurt to have more options? Not like it's an extra, redundant class... |
| CrimsonDeath11-29-07, 09:58 PM | It also lets you carry a second Psionic Focus with only one feat, when it is normally necessary to use two. |
| Sunrider11-29-07, 10:59 PM | Yeah, but you don't get all the other bonuses of a psicrystal, which are worth a feat in themselves, provided you have no objection to pet rocks... a mobile scout/messenger which can see and hear through supernatural darkness and silence to deliver touch attacks, untyped skill/save/other bonuses, the ability to manifest powers through the psicrystal at long-range, etc. |
| Haldrik11-29-07, 11:12 PM | It seems ok if an alternative to a psicrystal is a permanent "astral construct" that appears in the form of .. a small animal: a totem spirit or animal familiar. This works well with campaign settings that have a strong medieval feel. Likewise ... Personally, I would love it if the "psionic familiar" was actually made of pure force, like the Wizard spell Unseen Servant. |

Yeah, more options for 'familiars' wouldn't be bad either (are they ever?). After all, you can have a wizard with an imp familiar, another with a pseudodragon familiar and a third with no familiar, but an imbued staff. Personally, I don't like the concept of psions requiring pets to achieve their full potential - psionics, after all, is about the power of individual or combined minds, with many effects not reliant on physical manifestations of things (e.g. many Psychokinesis powers, the entire Telepathy, Clairsentience and Psychoportation disciplines). It only really seems to fit into Metacreativity, which is probably the discipline least represented in fiction anyway. A closed-off, independent portion of the mind - a little like a co-processor or integrated graphics chipset on a motherboard - seems much more in keeping with things. YMMV, however - which is why I present it as an option, not a replacement. |
| Zathress11-29-07, 11:35 PM | Here's a psicrystal story. A psionic friend of the party had died in battle while the party was fighting there own fight against big ancient evil. (The psion was fighting one of the lesser cousins of the PC's ancient evil enemy). The method of the psions death is unknown just that everything with in 100ft of him was vaporized. His psicrystal however survived and his spirit asked that they deliver it to his wife with the message of "I'm Sorry" the shapers method of death disallowed any raising from mortal magic. There is no real mention of what happens to a psicrystal if its master is to die. So I decided that a fragment of fallen hero would survive. |

Hardly a prominent psionic character in general fiction, though... prominent in one campaign, maybe, but not 'prominent' in general, non-D&D fiction in the way of Merlin, Yoda, Gandalf, Conan, Hercules, etc. |
| Haldrik11-30-07, 12:13 AM | Sunrider: A closed-off, independent portion of the mind seems much more in keeping with things [Psionic]. Personally, I agree completely. Thats why I want the "psionic familiar" to be nothing except an invisible force, like Unseen Servant. Then it isnt anything except a location of telekinesis. Its literally a "closed-off independent portion" of the Psionic chararacter's mind. |
| Sunrider11-30-07, 06:46 AM | A 'location of telekinesis' as you described could work too... I originally thought you meant 'invisible force' as in 'Force effect under the effect of Invisibility spell'. But an entity existing only within the mind of the psion would work well - a virtual entity with no ability scores, no hit-points, nothing except a maximum weight limit and special qualities dependant on the manifester level. In other words, indestructible except by temporarily or permanently rendering the manifester incapable of mental activity (Brain Lock, stunning, unconsciousness, death), in which case it is suppressed until the manifester is back 'online', as it were, and detectable only via a Psicraft (not Spellcraft) or Sense Motive check (there being no physical entity to detect via See Invisibility, True Seeing, etc.). |

| Sunrider11-30-07, 08:27 AM | Well, such an effect would be undeniably supernatural in nature, IMO, and as such would register to various divination spells/clairsentience powers, though identifying it would likely fall under a Knowledge (Psionics) check (not a psicraft or spellcraft check) IMO most of the time there would actually be no 'effect' as such, unless the force were moving something (in which case it probably wouldn't take much to realise something was going on... rocks don't move upwards by themselves!). The 'entity' that is actually creating the effect is a fragment within the manifester's mind, not a physical or unbodied entity like a familiar or Unseen Servant', the effect being created telekinetically at a distance, not by the psionic 'entity' itself physically pushing it; therefore, as there is no physical entity, there is nothing for clairsentience/divination abilities to detect. As for Knowledge: Psionics versus Psicraft/Sense Motive, I guess it depends how you view the ability. The description of Psicraft suggests it is used to identify powers and other psionic effects either being manifested or already in place - I see the use of this mental entity as being such a 'psionic effect'. Sense Motive also makes sense, since, although someone untrained in the psionic arts does not really understand the mechanics behind the effect, he or she can tell what the psion is up to. |
| AntiDjinn11-30-07, 01:35 PM | How is having a cocoon in your brain any more in flavor than a crystal? Cocoons normally surround something (something that happens to be in the process of a biological change) rather than being contained within something. There is also precedence within the paranormal literature for crystals acting as capacitors or resonators of psychic energy (search on Crystal Skull). Is there similar precedent for a cocoon serving as such, or is it just a word you happened to pick? Even the Jungian archetype of a cocoon is not as a storage vessel, it is a (temporary) husk that protects something in the process of changing into something else. It represents a period of stasis that precedes metamorphosis. From a game balance standpoint: Compare it to Psicrystal Containment: That feat grants: Ability to hold a second focus (and nothing else) and has prereqs: Manifester level 3, Psicrystal Affinity. Your feat grants: Ability to hold a second focus and has prereq: Power point reserve. No way should a feat with no or minor prereqs have the same Benefit line as a feat with strong prereqs. Compare also to Psionic Meditation: Its prereq of 6 ranks of Concentration requires a character to be at least level 5 to take it, and it doesn't let you hold two foci, it only lets you attempt to refocus more quickly. Why bother waiting till level 5 or later to be able to refocus quickly if you can start with two foci at level 1? Just take 20 twice in the AM and you are pretty much good to go expend one in a fight and still keep the other to use your maintain focus feats. |
| Kanachi11-30-07, 01:46 PM | I always thought a cooler way of doing a psionic version of a familiar would be to have it as a sort of split personality, which only you can see. It would have a strong personality of its own (very much like the ones available now) but would basically act as a constant unseen servant spell. It would be a bit like having your own personal ghost who the DM could use to great effect to get you both in and out of all kinds of mischief. The closest thing I can think of to my idea is probably Niki from the TV show heroes. what do you think? |
| Haldrik11-30-07, 02:16 PM | :D And the flavor of schitzophrenia is as old as humans are. So for sure the flavor is authentic D&D! |
| Kanachi11-30-07, 04:36 PM | indeed and endless fun, because only you can see/hear your other persona (without magical aids) so when you talk to it the other PC's will naturally think your insain. It always seemed to me to be a pretty flavourful goldmine to dig when considering an alternate way of making a psionic familiar. I would try to create some form of stat/rules for it but i'm kinda bogged down if anyone else wants to give it a go tho be my guest. |
| Enchanter_Tom11-30-07, 04:57 PM | I has a brilliant idea. Allow psions to take the "Obtain Familiar" feat at level 1. Let the familiar hold a psionic focus if the master takes the appropriate feat. Don't like the flavor? (omg a magix animal?) The psion has infused an animal with a portion of his consciousness, awakening it. |
| Viktor_Von_Doom11-30-07, 05:02 PM | Many people simply don't see psicrystals/pet rocks as something particularly psionic. Not like it's an extra, redundant class... Xaiver has been known to use Shi-Ar crystals to focuse his power, Jean has used them before, there are countless Psychics in DC that use them. |
| Enchanter_Tom11-30-07, 05:14 PM | They're not part of themselves in the way that psicrystals are, though. Also, the Shi'ar are dumb, and any plotline involving them--save for one that involves their destruction--should be killed with fire, kind of like how Marvel has murdered many a not-dumb idea in the past. (Ever try reading Psylocke's backstory? It kills braincells faster than The Matrix converts retards into pseudophilosophers.) |
| TheKeyofE11-30-07, 06:21 PM | Compare also to Psionic Meditation: Its prereq of 7 ranks of Concentration requires a character to be at least level 4 (5 for a straight Psion, since that's the earliest they could take it) to take it, Fixed that for you. |
| Sunrider11-30-07, 06:59 PM | How is having a cocoon in your brain any more in flavor than a crystal? Cocoons normally surround something (something that happens to be in the process of a biological change) rather than being contained within something. Not a physical cocoon within the brain, but a portioned-off section of the mind, independent of the rest and dedicated solely to psionics. Call it what you will - the concept is the same and everything else is just semantics. Except that Psicrystal Affinity in itself is an extremely powerful feat, giving you a mobile scout/messenger/spell delivery mechanism as well as the benefits of Skill Focus or one of the saving throw feats - probably worth two feats in itself already. Psicrystal Containment is really the icing on the cake here. Only thing is, the concept (not mechanics) of psicrystals doesn't really mesh well with many psychic archetypes; by not being able to take a second focus (so that you can expend two foci on the same power, or to use more than one focus per round) or have a target for Solicit Psicrystal, etc. these characters are losing out on a lot of power for the sake of character development. Compare also to Psionic Meditation: Its prereq of 6 ranks of Concentration requires a character to be at least level 5 to take it, and it doesn't let you hold two foci, it only lets you attempt to refocus more quickly. Just take 20 twice in the AM and you are pretty much good to go expend one in a fight and still keep the other to use your maintain focus feats. So that you can expend your psionic focus more than once during an encounter? In any case, you can have two foci at level 3 at the moment, which really isn't much different from having them at level 1 (what are you going to do with a second psionic focus at level 1 anyway?). Anyway, almost everyone who takes Psicrystal Affinity takes Psionic Meditation as well, so it's really a non-issue. |
| Sunrider11-30-07, 07:07 PM | Xaiver has been known to use Shi-Ar crystals to focuse his power, Jean has used them before, there are countless Psychics in DC that use them. Yes, crystals are a well-established part of psionics/mind-powers/the whole Indian mythology upon which this is based (dorje, drilbu, etc. are all Sanskrit words). They feature prominently in psionic fiction, from the Shi'ar of X-Men to the Adegan crystals used in lightsabers and the Khyber and Uraj crystals from Starcraft. But these are all external foci and power sources, not intrinsically connected with their owner in any way, and certainly not part of their owner in the same manner as psicrystals. Essentially, they're like magical or highly technological items. Pet rocks which fly around, sprout ectoplasmic limbs and essentially act as a fully-armed UAV for the manifester are something different entirely, and something almost without precedent in non-D&D fiction. |
| AntiDjinn11-30-07, 09:05 PM | Except that Psicrystal Affinity in itself is an extremely powerful feat, giving you a mobile scout/messenger/spell delivery mechanism as well as the benefits of Skill Focus or one of the saving throw feats - probably worth two feats in itself already. Psicrystal Containment is not the icing on anything and the fact that Psicrystal Affinity is useful is irrelevant because it is a separate feat. Compare it to Psicrystal Containment because that is the feat it approximates. Read Psicrystal Containment: What is its benefit? It lets you store a focus in your crystal. What else? Nothing else, allowing you to have a second focus is what the feat does; don't start to list the benefits of having a crystal becuase those are due to a separate feat and do not appear in the benefit line of Psicrystal Containment. What are its prereqs? Psicrystal Affinity and manifester level 3. Now look at your feat: What is its benefit? It lets you store an additional focus, but without putting it in a rock that might potentially be destroyed or stolen (there is no way to separate the character from this second focus). What are its prereqs? Having a power point reserve. Pretty light; everyone with the psionic subtype already qualifies. So what do you have? A feat that duplicates or exceeds the benefit of Psicrystal Containment with only a fraction of the prereqs. |
| Sunrider11-30-07, 10:27 PM | Well, make the prerequisite Manifester Level 3rd then, if you want. Doesn't make a difference anyway, given that you can't really take advantage of a second focus until 3rd level. |
| CrimsonDeath11-30-07, 10:50 PM | Well, make the prerequisite Manifester Level 3rd then, if you want. Doesn't make a difference anyway, given that you can't really take advantage of a second focus until 3rd level. Sure you can. You can burn it on Psionic Weapon or to take +15 on a Concentration check or something. |
| Sunrider11-30-07, 11:04 PM | Sure you can. You can burn it on Psionic Weapon or to take +15 on a Concentration check or something. That's hardly taking advantage of a second focus... with Psionic Weapon you're spending a full-round action for a chance to gain 2d6 damage on an attack (since you probably won't make the Concentration check in combat), when you could just hit the opponent for 2d6+1.5*Str and still have time to move away, while the Take 15 ability hardly requires a second focus anyway, since you can't use in combat and, when out of combat, have all the time in the world to regain your single focus anyway. The most important use of the second focus - metapsionics - isn't available until 3rd level and not really useable to a great extent for a few more levels after that. |
| CrimsonDeath12-01-07, 12:01 AM | A second focus would turn Psionic Weapon from a once-per-combat ability into a twice-per-combat ability. You're spending a full round action out of combat to get +2d6 to an attack in combat. Expending your focus to take 15 on a Concentration check to regain your focus is beyond pointless. I don't think it's even possible. There are a number of reasons a Psion might need to take 15 on a Concentration check at low levels, though-- manifesting defensively, maintaining a spell when interrupted by a readied action, manifesting on a boat or in a storm... Also, it would let a Human use one expend-focus feat without losing access to a maintain-focus feat. All that is at level 1. |
| Sunrider12-01-07, 12:40 AM | None of which actually unbalances psywars or psions/wilders at first level the least bit... in any case, make the prerequisites whatever you want, since it doesn't actually change the function of the feat (you won't really get much use out of it until 6th-7th level anyway). |
| Sunrider12-01-07, 02:13 AM | Personally, I agree completely. Thats why I want the "psionic familiar" to be nothing except an invisible force, like Unseen Servant. Then it isnt anything except a location of telekinesis. Its literally a "closed-off independent portion" of the Psionic chararacter's mind. Here's a first draft: Psychic Awakening Your mind awakens to its as-yet untapped psionic potential. You awaken a number of innate psychic powers, which grow in power as you develop your abilities. Prerequisites: Power point reserve Benefits: You gain a number of abilities as you advance in level. Manifester level:Abilities gained 1st-2nd: Alertness, Telepathic Signal 3rd-4th: Telekinesis 5th-6th: Telepathic Message 7th-8th: Psychic Node 9th-10th: Telepathy Alertness Your awakened mind enhances your senses. You are gain the benefits of the Alertness feat. Telepathic Signal As a free action, you are able to send a mental 'ping' to any creature within 100ft per manifester level whose presence in the vicinity of which you are aware. This signal may not carry any information directly; it is the mental equivalent of ringing a bell. Telekinesis At 3rd level, you gain the innate ability to affect your surroundings simply by concentrating on a desired outcome. By maintaining concentration (normally as a move-equivalent action each round), you may move an unattended object or willing creature up to 10ft/round in any direction. This object or creature may not weigh more than 1 pound per manifester level. The range of this ability is 25ft + 2ft/level. You may also use this ability for other, small, tasks involving minor physical activity, such as dusting a floor or table, creating a puff of air to blow out a candle or ringing a bell or gong. You may manipulate objects with this power as though you were manipulating it with one hand. Telepathic Message At 5th level, you gain the ability to send a one-way message to one or more creatures within 100ft per level whose presence in the vicinity of which you are aware. This requires the same effort as normal speech - sending a quick message is a free action, while sending a detailed list of instructions takes longer. At this stage, you are not yet able to register your target's reply using your innate abilities alone. You may send a message to a creature which does not understand your message, but the creature will interpret it as mental gibberish. Psychic Node At 7th level, you gain the ability to hold a second psionic focus. Telepathy At 9th level, you gain the ability to converse with one or more creatures within 100ft per manifester level whose presence in the vicinity of which you are aware. Apart from the distance and lack of sound, treat this as a normal conversation in all other respects. The target need not be telepathic in order to reply. As you are communicating in thoughts, rather than words, you and your target need not speak the same language. Special: You may not take Psychic Awakening if you already have Psicrystal Affinity. Similarly, you may not take Psicrystal Affinity after taking Psychic Awakening. |
| Haldrik12-01-07, 01:55 PM | Invisible force construct: remote presence or autonomous familiar. Personally, I would like to see the Force-construct familiar, less like an independent creature, and more like a remote presence that the Psion can see thru. Sort of like a robot with a camera. Players can also have the option of their familiar having an autonomous personality, being a schism of some aspect of their own unconscious. This option is fun too. Probably, the construct would have to be autonomous for it to have Psionic Focus. Obviously, the invisible remote presence resembles scrying, which can potentially disrupt the game narrative. I feel strongly, every creature (especially player characters) have right to know if they "feel being watched". Something like: the scryer must roll successfully against Will defense, so the scryer rolls once and this number is applied to all creatures being viewed, and any creature whose Will defense is higher than this number "feels like they are being watched". Diviners among them may attempt a counterscry to see or know who views them. Others may not be able to do anything about it but they have a right to be alerted. Admittedly, the "remote presence" Force construct resembles the hi-level power Arcane Eye. So its visual link wouldnt be available until higher levels, and meanwhile it would carryout mental commends. An autonomous familiar version is probably more useful at lo-level, because it can act on its own, with the DM deciding what its originator becomes aware of. |
| Haldrik12-01-07, 02:20 PM | By the way here is the info from the spell Unseen Servant (= 1 PP). Since its a first level spell, its safe as feat for a Psion 1. The only difference would be its originator can reform it, in case it gets "dissipated". An unseen servant is an invisible, mindless, shapeless force, [namely a location of Telekinesis] that performs simple tasks at your command. It can run and fetch things, open unstuck doors, and hold chairs, as well as clean and mend. It has an effective Strength score of 2. It can trigger traps and such, but it can exert only 20 pounds of force, which is not enough to activate certain pressure plates and other devices. It can’t perform any task that requires a skill check with a DC higher than 10 or that requires a check using a skill that can’t be used untrained. Its speed is 15 feet. The servant cannot attack in any way. It is never allowed an attack roll. It cannot be killed, but it dissipates if it takes 6 points of damage from area attacks. If you attempt to send it beyond the range from your current position, the servant ceases to exist. IMO, the Strength of the Force-construct should equal the bonus of the highest mental stat. Example, a Psion with Intelligence 18 grants Strength 4 to the construct. Ideally (eventually?), the construct can perform any skill that its originator can. Its speed must equal the originator, since it is permanent and must keep up. At higher levels, the Force-construct can attack and serve as the point of origin of powers. And serve as a remote presence for the originator. If the Force-construct is autonomous, it can have Schism-like abilities to manifest powers in addition to the above abilities. And Psionic Focus. The suggestion that the originator perceives the autonomous force visually, as if an actual person (and in some sense it really is), is cool! And this persons ability to interact autonomously with the world increases as its Telekinetic force becomes stronger. |

This option is fun too. Probably, the construct would have to be autonomous for it to have Psionic Focus. That's pretty much what I was trying to get at with Psychic Awakening. Without the remote viewing power, but with other neat abilities to boot (telepathy, telekinesis). A little like a more-powerful Prestidigitation. The personality traits thing (a bit like familiars or psicrystals) is probably a good idea too, perhaps representing a hidden, unconscious talent of the manifester. Given that the 'remote presence' is indestructible, and you gain the second focus at 7th level without having to take a second feat, the remote viewing/targeting power of the psicrystal would probably be too powerful. As it is, a 15th level psion can essentially use a psicrystal as a reconnaissance/targeting device to extend the range of all powers to over a mile; however, the psicrystal can be seen and destroyed. Without this vulnerability, remote targeting seems too powerful. |
| Haldrik12-03-07, 05:59 PM | Sunrider: Psychic Awakening [would make the Force construct an autonomous familiar], without the remote viewing power, but with other neat abilities to boot (telepathy, telekinesis). The personality traits thing (a bit like familiars or psicrystals) is probably a good idea too, perhaps representing a hidden, unconscious talent of the manifester. I think the concept is appealing. Given that the 'remote presence' is indestructible .. Right, the Force is indestructable in spells like Wall of Force. But it is possible to 'dissipate' Force in spells like Unseen Servant. SRD Wall of Force: A wall of force spell creates an invisible wall of force. The wall cannot move, it is immune to damage of all kinds, and it is unaffected by most spells, including dispel magic. However, disintegrate immediately destroys it. A teleport can bypass the barrier. It blocks ethereal creatures as well as material ones. SRD Unseen Servant: An unseen servant is an invisible, mindless, shapeless force that performs simple tasks at your command. ... It cannot be killed, but it dissipates if it takes 6 points of damage from area attacks. IMO, Wall of Force seems crazy. Immune to physical damage, but 'disintegrates' like a physical object?! Makes no sense. Perhaps any "object" made out of force should have hitpoints? This lets it be more balanced if a Psionic character uses Force constructs frequently. Perhaps, Force-contructs are invulnerable to physical damage and disintegration, but attacks by force, electric, and sonic, as well as magic weapons, can distrupt it? So it could be possible to break thru a Wall of Force with a magic sword. But if the material strength of a high-level Wall is stronger than that of a non-adamantine sword, the sword might break? |
