| Aleolus12-29-07, 02:21 AM | OK, I'm wanting to write up a character who will eventually become the equivilent of a Jedi Knight. This has probably been done before, but humor me. I figure a Psion would be the class to go with, but I'm not sure what to specialize in, or what feats to take as I level. Advice, please? |
| archerpwr12-29-07, 02:43 AM | While this isn't the CO board, some of the guidelines should apply. Level? Books? |
| Aleolus12-29-07, 03:24 AM | Starting at level 5, but I'm also looking for advice for the future. As for books, the XPH and CPH, mostly. |
| archerpwr12-29-07, 03:31 AM | Starting at level 5, but I'm also looking for advice for the future. As for books, the XPH and CPH, mostly. What key abilities are important to you? Most of the force stuff could be pulled off with straight psion, but combat would favor a gish or a psychic warrior. Maybe astetic psion and a monk level to mimic the dodging. |
| Jaid12-29-07, 12:05 PM | for a jedi knight, you actually may be better off with psychic warrior. psions aren't terribly martial oriented, and i would say that the kind of stuff you see jedi knights doing is more along the lines of what a psychic warrior would do (for example, i think you see a lot more self-buff and combat, and a lot less energy missile... that's classic psychic warrior to me). oddly enough, jedi masters seem to become quite good at psion-type stuff... too bad you can't use the reserve feats supplement from DSP, it would really help a lot imo. |
| Aleolus12-29-07, 12:29 PM | Well, the reason I said CP and XPH is because those are the most basic of them. He hasn't put any real restrictions on. And thanks to SRD, everyone has the Psionic books! |
| InkBlot12-29-07, 12:55 PM | I say the Ardent class is the right one for a Jedi. The mantles can give you the right mix of combat buffing and out-of-combat utility. There's even a Force mantle for lifting crashed X-Wings. Ardents' key ability is Wisdom. This synergises extremely well with four levels of Monk or Swordsage, and with various Psionic feats. Practiced Manifester, thanks to the unique mechanics of the Ardent class, can let you take up to four non-Ardent levels and not lose out on having the highest-possible level powers (Monk4/Ardent3 with PracMan has 4th level powers). You'll probably want to take Craft Psionic Arms And Armor as soon as you can, so your character can build his own lightsaber. Keep in mind that psionic versions of any magic weapon enhancement are possible (obliquely stated in the XPH, unquestionably stated in the MiC). A flaming longsword is close enough, right? And I can't imagine any good DM who wouldn't allow you to make a weapon enhancement that makes the blade shrink down into the hilt. |
| CrimsonDeath12-29-07, 03:16 PM | For a Good Jedi, I think a Sunblade might be more appropriate. It's a +2 bastard sword that can be wielded as though it were a shortsword (which should make it a light weapon), acts as a +4 weapon against Evil creatures, and deals double damage against undead and creatures native to the Negative Energy Plane (triple on a critical). It's in the DMG p. 228. |
| TifRhal12-30-07, 06:13 PM | just read your threat i posted my verion of a jedi let me know what you think . it is in the psionics section |
| Aleolus12-31-07, 02:49 AM | Where is the Ardent from? I'm not familiar with it. Then again, the only psionic base classes I am familiar with are the Psion, Psychic Warrior and the Wilder. |
| InkBlot12-31-07, 03:26 AM | The Ardent is from Complete Psionic (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060403a). They get 3/4 BAB, and more hit points than a psion. They have the same power points as a psion, and 9th level powers. Instead of a class power list, they get mantles. Mantles are similar to domains: a short list of themed powers and a special ability. They have 21 powers known at 20th level, and choose their known powers from among their mantles. Every few levels, an Ardent gains a new mantle (they start with two primary mantles, get a third mantle at 2nd level, a fourth mantle at 5th level, and so on). With a different choice of mantles and feats, an Ardent can be everything from a super powered martial artist, to a wannabe cleric, to a wizened old sage, and even a Jedi. But the realy unique thing about the Ardent, is that they do not have a maximum power level known. An Ardent can manifest any power she can pay the power point cost for. So a 9th level Ardent can only pay 9 power points, just enough to manifest 5th level powers. But a 9th level Ardent with Overchannel can pay 11 power points, enough to manifest 6th level powers. This works with Practiced Manifester as well, which increases your manifester level by 4 up to a maximum of your character level. For a Jedi feel, I think the mantles Fate, Force, Knowledge, Conflict, Communication, and Mental Power seem right. |
