| DM-Scott11-16-07, 02:25 AM | I'm going to be making a female psion (telepath) who will actually become something of a gish warrior type character. Essentially, the idea is she's a psion who will eventually pick up more combat focus as she adventures (adapting to the adventurer's lifestyle), and I know I'll want to go psion / slayer / elocater, for very specific reasons... The problem is it's gonna tear her apart mechanically, and I'm trying to figure out if I can do what I want to do without resorting to mechanically altering the existing classes for my cherry-picking needs (which I doubt the DM would mind, but yeah). I want to focus on psionic body and psionic feats (for hit points), and probably pick up track just to get to the slayer class. Elocator I want for sheer coolness factor (for some reason, the floating psionicist is a personal love of mine), with 1 level of elocator (for scorn earth). Problem is, that'd take a minimum of 3 feats (dodge, mobility, spring attack) for a 1 level dip for a cool-factor ability. :\ Perhaps it'd be a better idea to just request my character replace one of the psion bonus feats with the Scorn Earth ability the elocator gets... What do you guys think? Currently, she'll probably be going psion 9 / slayer 10 / elocator 1 (or psion 10, slayer 10 if I swap out scorn earth), with practiced manifest to negate that 1 manifester level loss from slayer. Her ability scores will be focused on intelligence and charisma, combined with armor and a ranseur as her primary weapon, and so forth. She'll be a far cry from a true warrior, as I'm still going to be building her feats & powers based on a focused manifester. Any thoughts? |
| hogarth11-16-07, 11:09 AM | Scorn Earth is not worth wasting 3 feats on. I'd rather take EK: Psionic Fly (and/or Psionic Overland Flight, Psionic Levitation, whatever) and just claim to be an elocater instead. If you can get your DM to give you the ability for free/cheap, more power to ya. |
| imakuni6711-16-07, 11:28 AM | Scorn Earth is not worth wasting 3 feats on. I agree on that. Have you considered dipping ranger as well? You get a lot for a dip of ranger. Psion 6/Ranger 1/Slayer 10/X You lose 2 levels of manifesting in the long run, but get into slayer much quicker and more efficiently (track bonus feat). If you want to get the most out of psionic body, you're better off not going into elocater as it requires 3 feats that are not psionic. |
| DM-Scott11-16-07, 01:11 PM | Thanks for the advice. I agree Scorn Earth isn't worth 3 non-psionic feats which actually don't fit my concept at all (she's not a hit & run fighter psion). A level of ranger isn't a bad idea at all, actually. I like the ranger class, and the skill points, BAB, saves, HD, and so forth would work just dandy I think. I'd loose a total of 2 manifester levels, but practiced manifester would help with that, at least as far as augmenting goes... I think I will probably convert scorn earth into a feat or variant psion ability (I think feat 'cause a psion could take it as a bonus feat, but so could a psychic warrior, and floating's cool, period). Let's try it as a feat. Scorn Earth [Psionic] You float and hover above the ground through raw psionic power. This movement is as natural as walking to you. Prerequisites: Concentration 8 ranks, any three psionic or meta-psionic feats. Benefit: You gain the Scorn Earth ability, as described for a 1st level elocater. It is reprinted here for your convenience. "Scorn Earth (Su) At 1st level, an elocater’s feet lift from the ground. From now on, she can float a foot above the ground. Instead of walking she glides along, unconcerned with the hard earth or difficult terrain. While she remains within 1 foot of a flat surface of any solid or liquid, she can take normal actions and make normal attacks, and can move at her normal speed (she can even “run” at four times her normal speed). However, at distances higher than 1 foot above any surface, her speed diminishes to 10 feet per round. While she remains within 1 foot of a surface, she can make melee and ranged attacks normally, but if she moves any higher, she incurs the penalties on melee and ranged attack rolls as if she were the subject of the psionic levitate power." Thoughts? |
| PhaedrusXY11-16-07, 01:14 PM | Take the ranger level at 1st for skill points. The proficiencies it brings are alot more useful then, also. If you're going to make Scorn Earth a feat, I'd say it should have Up the Walls as a prereq, and only work when you're Psionically Focused. The prereqs for the one you posted are way too easy. |
| imakuni6711-16-07, 01:25 PM | If you're going to make Scorn Earth a feat, I'd say it should have Up the Walls as a prereq, and only work when you're Psionically Focused. The prereqs for the one you posted are way too easy. Agreed. Here's how I'd make it. Scorn Earth (Psionic) P: Balance 4 ranks, Concentration 8 ranks, Up the Walls, ability to manifest Psionic Levitate. Benefit: As long as you are psionically focused, you gain the Scorn Earth ability of the Elocater PRC. But why not just use a levitation power or make an item that would let you levitate like that all the time? Feats are very important to your character after all. It's really your call. Ye olde psion/ranger/slayer build is tried and true though. |
| DM-Scott11-16-07, 01:45 PM | If I went with a level of ranger in the build, I'd surely make it the 1st level (skill points are nice). :D As far as the feat goes, I'm not really sure about the prerequisites. True, they are easy, but how difficult do they really need to be? I mean, I can't really justify to myself making the feat as difficult to take as to actually qualify for the elocator class (requiring 3 feats which have nothing to do with psionics). The scorn earth ability itself isn't as impressive as fly or levitate in effect, but is very flavorful and does help with terrain issues. I didn't want it to require a psionic focus because your character would just fall down every time they used their psionic focus (which let's face it, there's a lot of stuff to use that on - meta-psionic feats, psychic warrior based feats, psionic endowment, and so forth). The ability itself as presented in the elocator's 1st level ability doesn't require a psionic focus, though I realize it could be argued that that would simply be due to it being a class feature. Indeed, feats are worth a lot, especially to those psions. This particular one is a flavor-based feats with a nice ability (very slow flying and ability to ignore low-terrain issues like ice, or oils), and being a psionic feat could be combined with psionic body, which makes it a little better if you've taken that feat. The elocator just isn't worth it for someone who only wants Scorn Earth (because let's face it, scorn earth is just cool) because it perfectly replicates the ability to float by awesome (think Magneto, the guy from Akira, Jean Gray, etcetera). :P Any ideas for working this out in a balanced way, perhaps with better prerequisites (I admit I wasn't trying when I wrote them)? Peace out, Game on. |
| PhaedrusXY11-16-07, 01:58 PM | I think imakuni67's version looks very good. It is basically a reserve feat. I think it should only work when focused because that's how similiar psionic feats normally work. As long as you're careful, it shouldn't make a big difference. If you want the full benefit, I say you should just bite the bullet and be an Elocater. It is certainly not just "flavor-based". It has alot of mechanical advantages such as never having to worry about pit traps, cliffs, rough terrain, caltrops, and alot of other things again. |
| InkBlot11-16-07, 02:25 PM | I think I will probably convert scorn earth into a feat or variant psion ability (I think feat 'cause a psion could take it as a bonus feat, but so could a psychic warrior, and floating's cool, period). Let's try it as a feat. Why not as a power? It has effects on par with what powers can do. If it's a power, a Psychic Warrior can take Expanded Knowledge to get it, or you could just put it on the psywar list. Scorn Earth is basically a super-duper version of skate anyway. Scorn Earth Psychoportation Level: Nomad 3, Psychic Warrior 4 Display: Auditory Manifesting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal or touch; see text Target: You or one willing creature or one unattended object (total weight up to 100 lb./level); see text Duration: 10 min./level (D) Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: Yes (harmless, object) Power Points: Nomad 5, Psychic Warrior 7 The subject's feet lift from the ground. From now on, she can float a foot above the ground. Instead of walking she glides along, unconcerned with the hard earth or difficult terrain. While she remains within 1 foot of a horizontal surface of any solid or liquid, she can take normal actions and make normal attacks, and can move at her normal speed (she can even “run” at four times her normal speed). However, at distances higher than 1 foot above the floor or horizontal surface, her speed diminishes to 10 feet per round. While she remains within 1 foot of the floor, she can make melee and ranged attacks normally, but if she moves any higher, she incurs the penalties on melee and ranged attack rolls as if she were the subject of the psionic levitate power. If you manifest scorn earth on an object, treat the object as having only one one-hundredth of its normal weight for the purpose of dragging it along the ground. If the object falls, it descends safely at a rate of 60 feet per round, until it is within 1 foot of a floor again. Augment: You can manifest this power in one or both of the following ways. 1. If you spend 2 additional power points, the duration of this power becomes 1 hour per level. 2. If you spend 4 additional power points, you can manifest this power as an immediate action, quickly enough to gain it's benefit in an emergency. |
| Wizard Random11-16-07, 02:58 PM | Might I suggest not working off of Psionic Body and such? Lets say as a 9th level Psion (human) you would have a total of 9 feats (at 20th) which would net you 18 bonus HP, that is assuming all your feats are psionic. However if you took Improved Toughness this would net you 20 HP, you also would go from gaining 2HP every odd level to 1HP every level. This would free up alot of feats for the more useful abilities like Link power or some such. NOTE: Make sure your weapons and armor are made out of Crystal (because it fits/is cool) |
| InkBlot11-16-07, 03:13 PM | Might I suggest not working off of Psionic Body and such? I second that sentiment, with one caveat. If you already have Improved Toughness but you're still hungry for more HP, then Psionic Body is a good idea. This is only because you can't take Improved Toughness twice, and because normal Toughness sucks so hard. The only other situation were Psionic Body beats Improved Toughness is with the Psychic Warrior. With 7 character feats and 8 bonus feats, the Psychic Warrior can get 30 extra HP out of Psionic Body. Even if you can't make all your feats psionic feats, a Psychic Warrior can easily get more than 20 HP out of the deal. |
| PhaedrusXY11-16-07, 03:19 PM | You can also get alot more benefit from Psionic Body at the low levels than you'd get from Improved Toughness, especially if your DM allows flaws. Even without them, you can get 6 bonus hit points at first level with a human. For a psion, that probably doubles your hit points. |
| carnivore11-16-07, 03:47 PM | the best way to use Elocator and Slayer together is: Any race you like Psion 8/ Slayer 6/ Elocator 6 BAB 14 ML 17th (20th with practiced Manifester) 9th lvl powers feats: Track Dodge Mobility Spring Attack 3 feats to spend how you want Bonus Feats: 2 from Psion, and Sidestep Charge from Elocator :D |
| SlanderPanic11-16-07, 04:59 PM | I did up a ranger/nomad/illithid slayer Sunday night, after my Forgotten Realms character bought the farm. (Stupid save-or-dies.) I was surprised at how powerful and versatile a character it turned out to be, even though I made him while drunk. :plotting: For the OP's character, starting off as a ranger is more beneficial mechanically, but starting as a psion and picking up ranger skills later sounds more in-line with the story he's trying to tell. I'd go for psion 4/ranger 2 and then start on slayer. Once you've wrapped up slayer, if your campaign lasts that long, finish out the remaining levels with psion. |
| retkin11-18-07, 02:44 AM | Go psion 6/ elocator 4/ Slayer 10 16 BAB 18 ML ignore that build, its invalid. But now im upset by the fact that Elocater has a prereq of 3 bab and spring attack, when spring attack requires a bab of 4. why bother even having that 3 bab req. |
| angellis_ater11-18-07, 03:24 AM | If you were going to do Scorn Earth as a feat, I think a Sequestral Feat would be a good idea: Scorn Earth [Psionic, Sequestral] Prerequisites: Ability to manifest a 3rd level power. Benefit: As long as you sequester a 3rd level or higher psychoportation power, you can float a foot above the ground. Instead of walking you glide along, unconcerned with the hard earth or difficult terrain. While you remain within 1 foot of a flat surface of any solid or liquid, you can take normal actions and make normal attacks, and can move at your normal speed (you can even “run” at four times your normal speed). However, at distances higher than 1 foot above any surface, your speed diminishes to 5 feet per round for every 2 levels of the power you sequestered. While you remain within 1 foot of a surface, you can make melee and ranged attacks normally, but if you move any higher, you incur the penalties on melee and ranged attack rolls as if you were the subject of the psionic levitate power. As a secondary benefit, you gain a +1 competence bonus to your manifester level when manifesting psychoportation powers. |
| PhaedrusXY11-19-07, 11:06 PM | What the heck is a Sequestral Feat? |

| Lycanthromancer11-20-07, 02:22 PM | You could always use soulmelds from Magic of Incarnum to get the Track and Spring Attack feats, be a blue to get Psionic Dodge, and spend a feat on Mobility (if your DM will allow Psionic Dodge to qualify you for Mobility, that is). And yes, I've utterly reversed my stance on MoI because of the Incarnate by the Numbers thread. :P |
| CrimsonDeath11-20-07, 03:35 PM | be a blue to get Psionic Dodge I thought we established in another thread that Blues do not work that way. |
| imakuni6711-20-07, 05:09 PM | Go psion 6/ elocator 4/ Slayer 10 16 BAB 18 ML ignore that build, its invalid. But now im upset by the fact that Elocater has a prereq of 3 bab and spring attack, when spring attack requires a bab of 4. why bother even having that 3 bab req. In case your got spring attack as a racial or class feature some strange way? I have no example to give though. |
| Lycanthromancer11-20-07, 05:38 PM | I thought we established in another thread that Blues do not work that way. While I agree that there's a mistake in there somewhere, the SRD clearly states that blues gain Psionic Dodge as a racial bonus feat, which makes sense in the blue's monster entry (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/blue.htm), since it doesn't qualify for the feat as normal. So, RAW, it does get a racial bonus feat whether we like it or not. The monster feats entry even specifically says that feats marked with a 'B' can't be altered, as they're a part of the monster (even if you're changing the other feats around). If it WAS meant to be the psion bonus feat, then there're two mistakes; it can't qualify for Psionic Dodge, and it shouldn't be marked with a 'B'. Thus, it's probably just missing its psion feat. So nyah. :P (Then again, I could easily be wrong.) |
| CrimsonDeath11-20-07, 06:12 PM | As I believe we established, the example Blue Psion in the SRD has exactly two feats: Psionic Body and Psionic Dodge. If Psionic Dodge is its racial bonus feat, it's missing either its level 1 feat for being a creature with an Intelligence score or its level 1 bonus feat for being a Psion. Psionic Dodge could, however, be the bonus feat for bein a level 1 Telepath. Either explanation indicates an oversight of the rules. Now, consider the racial traits listed in the "Blues as Characters" entry on the page you linked. No racial bonus feats are listed. Since that section is "text", and the monster entry is a "table", and the general rule is that "text" trumps "table", I'm forced to conclude that Blues do not get Psionic Dodge as a racial bonus feat. Note that since the Blue's other feat is also a psionic feat, Psionic Dodge could be replaced with Dodge to yield a legal character (although the example Blue would lose 2 HP). |

Also, thanks for pointing out Incarnate By The Numbers (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=574633). |
| Lycanthromancer11-21-07, 02:18 PM | Lamia Belt. Bind it to your waist. Also, I made a comprehensive Excel spreadsheet with all of the MoI soulmelds (as well as the ones from the Dragon Magic book and the Mind's Eye pages on the WotC site). Would anyone like to host it for download for me? It has the base effect, the bind effect, as well as essentia effects for both base and binds. It also has a lot of other information for ease of search. :) ...I was trying to hyperlink the entries with their soulmelds, but Excel is giving me gyp. Damnit. Here's a link from Sendspace, though it won't last too long, and it doesn't have the hyperlinked goodness that I wanted: http://www.sendspace.com/file/beeqf3 |
| CrimsonDeath11-21-07, 02:31 PM | Lamia Belt. Bind it to your waist. Which you can't do until level 14 as a single-classed Incarnate or Totemist, or level 18 as anything else (when Soulborn get Chakra Bind: Waist free and anyone else can take Open Greater Chakra). |
| Lycanthromancer11-21-07, 09:17 PM | Or you could simply use an Overchannelled (or wild surged) open chakra power. You can get it at level 13, then (or 12 if you have some other way to increase your ML past normal, such as orange ioun stones). |
