| Rerecros03-12-07, 08:10 PM | If a PC wanted to play a Kalashtar in a psionics-banned game (don't lecture me on how great psionics are, it just seems like a redundant system of magic to me), what would be a good equivalent for their naturally psionic trait. I was thinking of adding half their class levels to their key ability score for the purposes of spells per day, but I don't know enough about psionics to know if that is fair. Is it? |
| Red1203-12-07, 08:17 PM | Thats way too many bonus spells. I believe an equivalent would be receiving a (one) bonus spell of your highest level available. |
| Tempest Stormwind03-12-07, 08:20 PM | If it seems redundant and you don't know enough about it, then isn't it possible you're wrong about the redundancy? Anyway, yes. 1 power point per HD is roughly equivalent to one spell slot of its highest level. The downside, however, is that since slots have no use outside of casting spells, this will essentially mean that to make use of that naturally psionic, you'll have to be a wizard or a sorcerer. A slightly different way to go about it would be to continue granting the PP, but allow him to spend the appropriate power points to cast a spell if he has that ability -- essentially, he becomes a living Pearl of Power. |
| Thomar_of_Uointer03-13-07, 01:52 AM | The power points are much more versatile than spell slots, and greatly benefit builds that use little or no psionics. However, the ability to prepare one extra spell of the highest spell level of any spellcasting class available is numerically equivalent, and makes sense for their flavor if magic is connected to dreams in your campaign. |
| RadicalTaoist03-13-07, 08:48 AM | Shouldn't a thread about replacing psionics with something else be on Magic & Spells, or Eberron Races? |
| DisposableHero_03-13-07, 12:37 PM | Theoretically this is a good place to come for knowledge of things in psionics than need to be translated to the magic system and what the ins and outs are. Even given most of us aren't interested in downgrading to vancian casting like that. |

Other than Elan resiliency and stuff I right now cannot think of any way a non-manifester would benefit from a hand-full of PPs (outside of gaining the "psionic" subtype and being able to take [psionic] feats). |

A fighter with Deep Impact and Power Attack can dish out insane amounts of damage with good reliability. There is also the Mind's Eye soulknife fix that replaces Wild Talent, 1 pp per level is huge for ML 1 powers. |

Psionics is the frishizzle, why would yo.... j/k;) If a PC wanted to play a Kalashtar in a psionics-banned game ... what would be a good equivalent for their naturally psionic trait. I was thinking of adding half their class levels to their key ability score for the purposes of spells per day, but I don't know enough about psionics to know if that is fair. Is it? I would say that you should give kalashtar characters a virtual spell slot of a level equal to that of the highest slot available to a sorcerer of the same level. This slot can used to cast spells for any class the character has access to. It doesn't enable the character to cast spells of a level he wouldn't be able to otherwise; however, he can use the slot to cast spells he does have access to that are augmented by Meta-Magic feats to a spell level equal to the virtual spell slot, even if the character would not be able to cast spells of that level. In addition, this virtual spell slot can have a virtual spell prepared in it if the character spends one hour preparing the virtual spell in the same manor that a wizard prepares spells. This virtual fills the slot and has no more than one descriptor of the character's choice (decided at the time of preparation), but otherwise has no effect if casted; however, this virtual spell counts for the purposes of using a Reserve feat. This would answer a lot of questions of flexability that others have brought up. |

I see, but I was asking for uses but these. ;) However, for the OP both are mood points, as in his campaign psionics are not allowed and therefore neither psionic feats nor soulknife expanded classes are important to him. And Deep Impact is by no means the only (or in that regard most efficient) means to gain insane damage output. Althouh Combat Brute + Shock Trooper + Leap Attack requires more feats in total, it is more flexible and does not require you to spend a full action to regain focus (what is a big deal of you're in the thick of melee). In a "normal" (psionics allowed) campaign I'd fully agree with you. But in this case I think it's a special situation and the additional "flexibility and use" of PPs for non-manifesters compared to that addition spell slot approaches 0. |
| JulesCARV03-14-07, 03:10 AM | One spell slot of highest level replaces naturally psionic. Favored class: either cleric or sorcerer. (I'm not sure which) |
| InkBlot03-14-07, 03:21 AM | Favored Class: Monk Seriously. Adar is enlightenment country. |
