The transparency generally implies things that affect powers affect spells and vice versa so by that logic it should or am I missing something here? No. The 'transparency thing' is very explicit in where it applies -- Feats are NOT transparent. Otherwise, why would you need Combat Manifesting if Combat Casting existed? |
| myusernameis04-24-07, 04:46 PM | Except every feat that doesn't apply to psions specifically says so. Edit: More aptly, every feat that affects one but not the other specifically says so. |

Edit: More aptly, every feat that affects one but not the other specifically says so.No, they don't. I mentioned Combat Manifesting earlier; that's a pretty good example right there. If feats were transparent, you would just use Combat Casting. Let's reread Psionics-Magic Transparency again, shall we?Psionics-Magic Transparency Though not explicitly called out in the spell descriptions or magic item descriptions, spells, spell-like abilities, and magic items that could potentially affect psionics do affect psionics. When the rule about psionics-magic transparency is in effect, it has the following ramifications. Spell resistance is effective against powers, using the same mechanics. Likewise, power resistance is effective against spells, using the same mechanics as spell resistance. If a creature has one kind of resistance, it is assumed to have the other. (The effects have similar ends despite having been brought about by different means.) All spells that dispel magic have equal effect against powers of the same level using the same mechanics, and vice versa. The spell detect magic detects powers, their number, and their strength and location within 3 rounds (though a Psicraft check is necessary to identify the discipline of the psionic aura). Dead magic areas are also dead psionics areas. That's it. Dispel, detect, antimagic. Spell=power. Yes. FEATS and SKILLS? No. |
| myusernameis04-24-07, 05:13 PM | Ok, I was wrong. |
| Tempest Stormwind04-24-07, 05:15 PM | Ok, I was wrong. They do gain benefit, just from a particular subset of feats. For instance, Psionic Shot can be applied to rays, and psionic focus can be expended on Concentration checks to cast spells defensively or if disrupted. (EDIT: you edited after I loaded the page but before I clicked "quote".) |
| myusernameis04-24-07, 05:42 PM | (EDIT: you edited after I loaded the page but before I clicked "quote".)Sorry about that, was just worried about opening a psionics versus arcane magic can of worms. |
| Tempest Stormwind04-24-07, 05:50 PM | Sorry about that, was just worried about opening a psionics versus arcane magic can of worms. Nah, wizards get enough cookies anyway. (Look at all those sweet feats that *only* arcane or divine spellcasters get! Manifesters, warriors, experts, initiators, and so on can't benefit from *any* of those! Meanwhile, any psionic feat that doesn't directly alter a power is open to any character of a psionic race, a psionic class, or any other class with the Wild Talent feat.) |
| myusernameis04-24-07, 07:08 PM | Oh, I wasn't saying they don't get enough cookies, believe me, I know they get tonnes. I just like the idea of a psychic character using their talents to enhance their magic. Now before you say Cerebremancer you must remember that while they get both psionics and arcane magic neither can intermingle. |

Now before you say Cerebremancer you must remember that while they get both psionics and arcane magic neither can intermingle. Dwoemer of Transferrance, Mental Pinnacle. Back of the XPH. Naturally, both are spells. Do note that a literal reading of Dwoemer of Transferrance and psi-magic transparency means you're immune to all targeted spell effects. |
| Vharuck04-24-07, 07:28 PM | This is also a balancing factor in the Cerebremancer. It's comparative in power to the Mystic Theurge in that, while the MT casts from two types of magic with two different primary abilities (necessitating the Theurge spend money and ability points on both for maximum benefit), the Cerebremancer can cast from a single ability score but limits the meta-X and creation feats from applying to both magic and psionics. |
| Kiklio04-25-07, 10:10 PM | Not exactly, Vharuck. Going each direction. With new books a Mystic Theurge can be a Sorcerer/Favored Soul or a Wizard/Archivist. Cerebremancers don't always have matching ability scores; for example, the Wilder/Wizard or the Sorcerer/Psion. The idea that some mechanics are non-transparent to satisfy perceived balance issues with a class due to a circumstantial lack of multi-ability dependency is absurd. That sentence was awkward to write. |
| myusernameis04-26-07, 02:27 AM | Kiklio speaks truth. |
