Hi

I am just getting back into D&D after a long absence (mostly due to dislike of "dungeon bash"-ing) and the GM has decided she will run the adventure (although it's likely to be a dungeon bash) based on possibly the craziest idea I have heard...D20 Random. The premise is that if you have a D20 source book then you can use anything from it.

Unluckily for her I still have a nice pile of D&D books from 3.5 (and some 3.0) which I can raid and my first thoughts were to make Pun-Pun (fond memories of reading that character back in the day) but I decided that I would just stick with a standard human and make it a character on par with normal characters of the same level (5).

So my question is: what is more fun (in your opinion) a psion with a variety of powers (mostly blasty ones) or a soulknife (I like the roguse-ish aspect of them)?

I think I had more questions when I started this post but I can't actually remember them.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am using the 3.0 Psionics book (can't recall the name, expanded psionics possibly)

Psions are casters, soulknives as written are gimped.

And DO NOT USE THE 3.0 PSIONICS HANDBOOK (brown cover with illithid on it). It's worse than watching Glitter.

What's so bad about it? I quite like it as a break from core books. Soulknives seem like a cool class, I accept they aren't as good as rogues or rangers (who I consider their core counterparts).

Psionic combat, it's just horrifying.

Use the Expanded Psionics Handbook. It's 3.5, and a far better system.

Unless you like having no power points, every power keyed to a different key ability score, no scaling whatsoever, weak individual effects except for a few broken loops, and the worst mechanics seen since 2e died (Psionic combat), avoid the 3.0 psionics handbook.

I will see about picking up the 3.5 book. I don't know if my FLGS has it in, if not then it's to amazon for me.

Any suggestions on what I should use from the 3.5 book?

I just checked Amazon.co.uk and I have the expanded psionics handbook (the greyish one with teh crazy eye thing on it).

Hands down, by a crazy margin a straight psion egoist would be more fun then the Soulknife.
Why?
- Use egoist powers to do some light melee while still having a blasting option.
- Metamorphisis to obtain stealth.
- Psychic Reformation. Don't like what you did this week? Reform yourself for next week and you have a whole new set of skills/powers/feats

I had a brief look at the egoist but I preferred the obvious blasty nature of kinetisct (sp?). I will need to have another look. We are starting at level 5 so I have access to some very nice things (lots of energy based powers).
