Permanent Psionic tattoos

Permanent Psionic tattoos (refered to as PPT from now on) are designs scribed on the skin that manifest powers or grant abilities on their wearers. Unlike standard psionic tattoos, PPTs are designed to bond with their bearers granting them permanent psionic abilities. The wearer doesn’t get to make any decisions about the tattoo’s effect—the manifester who scribed it has already done so.

Physical Description: Unlike standard psionic tattoos, a typical PPT is either black or white with complex patterns. This design can be as complex as an artist wishes to make it. Once it is scribed, a tattoo’s design does not change. A PPT usually covers arms, legs, the torso and the head of a creature. However, greater tattoos occupy the whole body.

Scribing and Transferring Tattoos: The manifester level of a PPT is the minimum level required to manifest the scribed power. A PPT can contain only powers of 3rd level or lower. Unlike their standard counterpart, PPTs once scribed cant be moved or transfered. PPTs cannot overlay with other tattoos.

Identifying Psionic Tattoos In addition to the standard methods of identification, the wearer of a PPT can concentrate on it and attempt to gain some sense of how it would feel if activated. A successful DC 15 Intelligence check provides a hint to the tattoo’s effect.

Activation: A PPT produces its effect when willed to do so. Some effects are permanents, others are simply granted to the bearer as psi-like abilities.

Types & Abilities: There are three types of PPTs; Least, lesser and Greater tattoos. For the purpose of maximum psionic tattoos a character may posses, least tattoos occupy the space of 3 psionic tattoos, lesser tattoos occupy the space of 5 while greater tattoos occupy the space of all tattoos in the body. Least tattoos grant use of one power chosen at the moment of the tattoo's scribing once per day as a psi-like ability. Least tattoos occupy one body slot (see below). Lesser tattoos occupy two body slots. In addition to granting the use of a power once per day as a least tattoo, a lesser tattoo enhances an ability score by 1 point depending what body slots is occupying. Greater tattoos can grant multiply abilities to the bearer. A character with a Greater Permanent Psionic Tattoo may choose to manifest a chosen power at the moment of its scribing of 4th level or lower, A greater PPT also enhances one ability score by 2 In addition, the bearer gains a reserve of 4 power points. The Manifester level of all PPTs is equal to ½ Hit Dice (minimum 1st). The save DC is Charisma-based.

Body slots & PPTs: arms, legs, torso and the head are considered body slots when scribing PPTs. Arms and legs count as 1 slot for each limb, thus a creature with two arms is cosidered to have two slots for two least tattoos or one lesser tattoo. The head and the torso could function as 1 slot but can also hold a lesser tattoo, therefor the head or the torso could hold 1 lesser tattoo or 1 least tattoo. Creatures with multiple limbs like thri-kreens benefit from this feature. A thri-kreen posses for arms, therefor he could bear 4 least tattoos or two lesser tattoos on his arms, but it cannot exceed the maximum tattoos a psionic character can posses.

Body Slots & Affinity: Each body slot for PPTs has an affinity with an ability score: Arms (Strength), Legs (Dexterity), Torso (Constitution), Head (Intelligence, wisdom & Charisma). A Character with a lesser permanent tattoo on the legs would enhance the character's dexterity score while one lesser tattoo on the arms would enhance it's strength.

The following rules govern the use of permanent psionic tattoos.

* A creature must have an appropriate physical surface on which to scribe the pattern (thus, incorporeal creatures or creatures with impermanent flesh, such as fire elementals, cannot use psionic tattoos).
* A permanent psionic tattoo does not require tapping but follows the standard rules of psi-like abilities when applicable.
* A character can trigger the effects of another’s psionic tattoo if the other wearer is unconscious. It is a full-round action to find, touch, and concentrate on an unconscious creature’s tattoo in order to tap it.
* A Permanent Psionic tattoo can only be removed or transfered by a wish spell or effect of similar magnitude.

Table: Permanent Psionic Tattoos
Minor Medium Major Type Market Price
01-47 01-08 — Least 3000 gp
47-100 09-75 01-50 Lesser 6500 gp
— 76-100 51-100 Greater 10000 gp

if you have access to Hyperconscious, the idea is presented in there, as well.

I just took a look and you are right... is presented as a feat that grants you the use of a psionic tattoo once per day. My take was too add more flavor to tattoos, tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts. I wanted to add a little of that to psionic tattoos, this is but a mere draft for me to work on and expand on more abilities, I know there isnt much fluf to back that up but still i want to give it a shot.

I'd probably make them have to be triggered just like a normal Tattoo, otherwise they are better than Psilike abilities and Tattoos as you have it set up where some else can trigger it when unconcious.

I don't I'd give PP with the Tattoo, I'd just go with so many activations day/week like the Dragonmarks of Eberron.

Nice flavor though, with a little work it'd make a nice addition to the game.

If you haven't seen it, you should take a look at this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20031225a). It provides ways to get tattoos that don't dissappear when used, and alot of other interesting and fun things.

Something that bugged me about the original psionic tattoos was that they were not permenant - just worn until used.

Something that isn't made clear is how often a permanent tattoo power can be used ...

Your wording for the item is ugly. Note what different kinds of tattoos exist in the Description, then just state their abilities plainly and don't even reference crafting. You can say that a specific power has to be chosen in the physical description, don't reference scribing in the item description. Treat them like any other magic item. Treat them like seperate magic items if it makes them easier to read. I'm sorry, the whole post makes my brain hurt.

Also, odd ability score bonuses are a big no-no. They do nothing half the time.

"Least permanent tattoos grant the use of one power as a psi-like ability once per day. They count as three tattoos for the purpose of determining how many tattoos a character can have, and cannot occupy the same body part as another permanent tattoo."
There. Was that hard?

Also, am I to understand that a least tattoo can hold a power of any level, while greater tattoos can only hold a power of up to level 4? Why not follow the item guidelines and make it a variable price based on the power level, plus the price of the other abilities?

And no i wont reword things or treat them like seperate magic items cuz they arent ^_^ but thanks for the feedback.
