is there any way to pull off consistently getting melee attacks as melee touch, but using psionics or psionic classes/races/prc's instead of arcane?

ive been looking around and found nothing. any ideas?

Does Deep Impact count?
Past level 8 or so, you could be making one (or two) melee touch attack(s) per round.

how? i know DI makes you spend your focus. i only know of psychic meditation to get the focus back as a move action. also, i thought DI only works for one attack.

can you actually get a full attack with deep focus?

please explain

No, see, psionics is balanced.

(Persistent) Wraithstrike is widely held to be one of the cheesiest simple stunts in the game.

If you're desperate to avoid armor, use brilliant energy weapons, or use Deep Impact on things like Tome of Battle strikes.

ok..

is the brilliant energy able to be turned on/off with a command word? its a very expensive enhancement. it would be a shame for the weapon that it is on to be completely useless against undead/constructs.

Nope. You'll have to get a different weapon for that.

The craziest thing you'll be able to do with straight psionics is Deep Impact + Psicrystal Affinity + Psicrystal Containment + Psionic Meditation. You get two Deep Impacts per round, but you'll have to spend some time recharging your psionic focus. With some ToB maneuvers, you'll be able to recharge your focus more easily, of course.

And then if you take the psychic weapon master (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827d) (not that great of a PrC, really), then you can have a crystal weapon you can treat as if it were a psicrystal. You'd probably be better of taking levels in kensai, and giving your weapon the brilliant energy ability that way, unless you're willing to pay that much money.

He's referring to ToB's only Psionic feat (Instant Clarity), not a maneuver. Although Diamond Mind lets you put those Concentration ranks to good use as well.

Heh. Sorry. I don't have ToB, and was referring to discussions I've seen on the subject.

Psychic Renewal is a psionic feat as well.

Anyway, to clarify for sir_argenon:

Instant Clarity allows you to become psionically focused as a swift action after hitting with a strike maneuver. It only works 3 times a day, but it can still be incredibly useful (especially if your DM abides by the 4-encounters-per-day idea). So you can use Deep Impact and a Strike, then recover your focus as a swift action on the same turn.

But that isn't the only psionic goodness in Tome Of Battle. The Psychic Renewal feat allows you to recover a maneuver as swift action by expending focus and paying power points equal to the level of the maneuver. So you could recover a 6th level maneuver by paying six power points. Then there's the Diamond Mind maneuvers which require you to make a Concentration check, for which you can expend focus to take 15.

EDIT: The 2nd level strike Emerald Razor lets you make a single attack as a touch attack.

Well you could always take a few levels in Erudite, using the Spell to Power variant to learn wraithstrike as a power.

<amy winehouse>they want me to play an erudite and i said NO NO NO! </amy winehouse>

j/k.. but dont you think erudite is very bad.. i mean VERY bad? it has great abilities, but is it the single most limited caster in all of dnd. that unique powers thing is a dealbreaker for me.

The Wilder is significantly more limited. It has the same number of unique powers... except that's powers known.

Hardly. The thing is, you don't choose your powers until the moment you actually use them, and every good erudite should grab Imprint Stone.

Well, at level 1 your options are pretty limited. One power per day is not very versatile. I had the same experience with a level 1 spirit shaman.

wilder can take EK to learn more powers.

im not aware of anything that can allow erudite to use more powers per day. is there a feat for that?

And spell to power with mental pinnacle as a power is not discussed even among rude company.

it's hidden in the back of the XPH somewhere iirc. in any event, it's a spell that basically gives a player the various powers that are the 2e attack and defense modes (iirc) plus a bunch of PP to use them with.

ie, it would give you more PP then you spent manifesting the power, which would then be added to your original PP pool, and you could then use those points to manifest it again, etc.

though i would hope they're at least temporary points, so that this at least doesn't allow you to continuously build your PP higher and higher each time you use it...

They're not temporary power points, so if you have a method of PP-*recovery* (virtually none outside of artifact or wonderous-location ones exist, to my knowledge; I'm not talking Torcs here, but rather actual recharges) but they do go away when the spell ends. However, since they're based on your caster level, and Convert Spell To Power doesn't add an augment cost to capitalize on higher CLs, you can Overchannel it and walk away with a buttload of bonus power points without spending anything except your focus (with Talented).

Mercifully, though, it replaces your spellcasting (and thus, presumably, your manifesting) with just those five powers, which would suck in the case of a psion. As an erudite, however, where every unique power per day counts? Importantly to an erudite, those five powers don't count as unique powers per day (since you manifest them as a psion would; only Mental Pinnacle would count), and some of them (notably Ego Whip, but to a lesser extent Id Insinuation and Mind Thrust; the other two are situational at best at those levels) are incredibly useful if you know what to do with them. You also aren't limited by the number of spare power points; you can continue to manifest these with your own reserve.

The biggest cheese possible with it -- using those bonus power points to create Soul Crystals (Magic of Incarnum) -- is *almost* impossible due to its almost total overwriting of your manifesting/item using potential. However, by employing cognizance crystals to store the bonus power points, you can in fact "piggyback" the free power points into Soul Crystals of your own. Note that this significantly increases the number of powers at the erudite's party's disposal, as well as adding psionic stamina (and, since Soul Crystals can be used by anyone, you can also double-up on actions: If three Energy Missiles can destroy a target, why not have three party members use soul crystals all on the same round?).

There is, however, a rules-lawyer-slaying trick for it. It says "Any unspent power points dissipate when the spell ends." Do notice how it doesn't say unspent power points from the spell. He who lives by the oversized munchkin hammer...

(And for the record, those are the 3e attack modes, with no defense modes. The 3e defense modes were Empty Mind, Thought Shield, Mental Barrier, Intellect Fortress, and Tower of Iron Will. None of the defense modes were as good as they were in 3.5 -- in which Intellect Fortress in particular is freaking incredible. With the attack modes, most just dealt ability score damage, and as you know from the AntiDjinn quote in my sig, none were particularly useful.)

Well, talented is neither here nor there when you're dealing with a 6th level power; you suck up the damage, or you forget about the higher manifester level: I'd go with the latter, myself. If you want to convert your mental pinnacle power points into permanent ones, I suppose you might be able to "launder" them with bestow power (maybe using a psicrystal to channel it to yourself if you want to convert them into your permanent PP). A bit of a pain, but hey, if your manifester level is 13 (lowest at which it can be learned), you're gaining a net of 26 power points. Bestowing them gives 16 to the recipient while still leaving you with 15 to manifest the 13 pp spell-as-power (extra 2 pp to ignore the potion of fox's cunning requirement).

Of course, that's burning up two unique powers, but it's probably more practical as an infinite PP loop than the temporal reiteration and metamind one, for what it's worth.

mental pinnacle doesn't prevent you from using your own powers known with the bonus power points. because they are not bonus power points, they therefore stack.

which means that you can use the PP from mental pinnacle to manifest mental pinnacle... i'm sure you can see where this is going by now, and i'm sure you'll agree that it is not desireable.

No, you can't. It replaces your spellcasting ability completely, and by psi-magic transparency if something could potentially affect psionics it does. This strongly suggests that it overrides your manifesting ability, meaning that to use Mental Pinnacle's power points to manifest Mental Pinnacle would require a cognizance crystal.

I covered this further in my post; was I unclear? If I was, sorry.
Jaid

03-04-08, 11:14 PM
hmmm... i wouldn't say manifesting levels would be overwritten normally, even with transparency. as written, it definitely does overwrite your ability to use a lot of psionic items, but it would still allow you to use your regular manifesting abilities.

in particular, i wouldn't say it overwrites your ability to use manifesting abilities because it indicates the reason you lose the ability to use spells is because you suddenly decide that spells are dumb.

in any event, i am of the opinion it's not a very good idea for a spell anyways, and it's not as if i would ever allow anyone to use it to give themselves infinite power points in a game i ran anyways, so i suppose it's a moot point =S

Transparency doesn't matter. Mental Pinnacle says that for the duration of the spell, you manifest as a Psion who knows only those five powers.
