| Tempest Stormwind04-08-08, 02:16 AM | A blue busting out mindprobe on a paladin. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0546.html) Huh, and here I though that Rich hated psionics. He does, last I checked. He also dislikes Eberron (but there's an obvious reason for that, and he and Keith get along well enough; his dislike for that may be staged). That doesn't stop him from including jokes on either. There's been a psion in OotS before, too -- in On the Origin of PCs, an Ialdabode lookalike applied to join Roy only to be rejected (in eventual favor of Haley and V), and during Roy's afterlife experience, his mother identified herself by revealing Roy's favorite bedtime story was The Little Psion Who Could (levitating a train while repeating "I think I can, I think I can"). |
| Lycanthromancer04-08-08, 10:30 AM | He might be getting over his psi-aversion, but then again he might just have wanted something thematically-appropriate. Who knows? |
| Ecalsneerg04-08-08, 11:15 AM | Who says he still likes 'em? Redcloak is the a villain. What he likes may not be a good indication of Rich's tastes :P |
| Jaid04-08-08, 03:12 PM | it is worth noting that psionics only made it in ahead of 3 things: fortune cookies, a magic 8-ball, and incarnum. i don't call that 'liking' psionics =P |
| Nephlite04-08-08, 03:20 PM | it is worth noting that psionics only made it in ahead of 3 things: fortune cookies, a magic 8-ball, and incarnum. i don't call that 'liking' psionics =P At least it wasn't the Magic-Squall Ball (answer like Squall from FF8). |
| GuyrtheadamantineOne04-08-08, 03:51 PM | At least it wasn't the Magic-Squall Ball (answer like Squall from FF8). I love this idea. It would answers ''whatever'' to every question asked. |
| CrimsonDeath04-08-08, 05:13 PM | I love this idea. It would answers ''whatever'' to every question asked. It would have a coin inside. One side would say "Whatever..." The other would be blank. |
| Nephlite04-08-08, 07:33 PM | The idea came from a old webcomic: http://adventurers-comic.com/d/0155.html |
| Drackthor04-08-08, 07:36 PM | Pfft. Psionics are so mainstream now. The real underdogs are Incarnum users, duh. ;) |
| GuyrtheadamantineOne04-08-08, 08:08 PM | The idea came from a old webcomic: http://adventurers-comic.com/d/0155.html Man, I really didn't knew about that! That makes me, most likely, a Seer!:D |
| The_Mess04-08-08, 10:50 PM | Admittedly, I'm not sure what an incarnum user would be good for in that particular circumstance. I mean, sure, he could come up with clever and original ways to torture the victim, but every class could do that. They aren't big on divination or mind-reading. I'm sure OotS is just biding time. After all, if they had included psionic or incarnum using PCs, they would have defeated Xykon already and the story would be over! |
| CrimsonDeath04-09-08, 02:57 AM | Maybe that Kobold oracle was a Seer? |
| Lycanthromancer04-09-08, 09:52 AM | Kobold Seer: Oracle for Hire? Nah, not nearly enough alliteration. |
| Ecalsneerg04-09-08, 11:09 AM | Maybe that Kobold oracle was a Seer? I think he had the Divine Oracle PrC. Y'know... the whole praying to Tiamat thing. |
| HK-47 II04-10-08, 11:06 PM | it is worth noting that psionics only made it in ahead of 3 things: fortune cookies, a magic 8-ball, and incarnum. i don't call that 'liking' psionics =P But Redcloak didn't know they were using Psionics.... Of course, Psionics being rare enough that he could be unaware of it could itself speak to how much the person who made the world likes/dislikes it. |
| CrimsonDeath04-11-08, 02:50 AM | I just like the fact that the Telepath was a Blue. Which makes sense, considering the fact that Redcloak himself is a Goblin and his army is made up of Hobgoblins. |
| Millenia04-11-08, 04:46 AM | I don't see why people thought that Burlew didn't like psionics. Just because there's an overall lack of it (three references in all those strips; one of them even being offline) does not necessarily indicate a dislike. =/ |

| JulesCARV04-12-08, 12:12 AM | Maybe Rich figures that he might as well loosen up about various 3.5e splatbooks since 4e is coming anyway. After all, OotS upgraded from 3e to 3.5e in character, so they might upgrade to 4e. It doesn't seem like Rich has some particular aversion to psionics, after all -- it's not as if he has favored souls, beguilers, warlocks, or hexblades all over the place and excludes psionics or anything. It seems that he sticks to core generally. Ninjas (assuming that they actually are CAdv ninjas and not just oriental-flavored rogues or rogue/assassins -- I mean, Miko definitely wasn't a CWar Samurai) and psionics are two of the few places where OotS actually does stray from core only. If anything, that demonstrates greater affinity for XPH than, say, Complete Warrior or Tome of Battle. Of course, psionics is Open Gaming Content, so maybe the contrast between how much he uses psionics and the amount he uses non-OGL stuff like Binders is a bit off base, but at any rate, you get the idea. The one thing that worries me if OotS upgrades to 4e is Elan. Roy (if/when he comes back to life), Haley, Vaarsuvius, Durkon, and Belkar all ought to make it through to 4e okay, along with various paladins like Hinjo, but Elan seems like he won't be compatible -- bards aren't included in 4e. I'm kinda bitter about getting rid of bards at any rate. |
| InkBlot04-12-08, 12:18 AM | Elan can be a Rogue with Wizard training, or Warlock training. His music won't be magical anymore, but he should otherwise be mostly the same. The extra combat ability from the Rogue class will even help account for the melee PrC he had. |
| JulesCARV04-12-08, 02:34 PM | In other words, he'll become like Nale, at least build-wise. Ah well. I suppose bards will be back in 4e eventually, in some future supplement. Maybe he can tough it out until then. |
| InkBlot04-12-08, 02:41 PM | Ooooh! He would be like Nale! That could make for some delicious drama. |
| Ecalsneerg04-12-08, 05:04 PM | Rich already said he regrets the first strip (the 3.0 -> 3.5 one). I doubt he'll do another edition change. |
| The_Mess04-12-08, 10:53 PM | But I want to see them edition change! And a quest to save Elan from fading into nothing with the removal of his class! Will he be forced to follow Nale's example and become a multiclass? |
| Nephlite04-12-08, 10:58 PM | Elan can be a Rogue with Wizard training, or Warlock training. His music won't be magical anymore, but he should otherwise be mostly the same. The extra combat ability from the Rogue class will even help account for the melee PrC he had. Warlord with Wizard training fits Elan to a tune. He barely uses magic (low level at will magic will be enough). His Bardic music can be substituted for Warlord's commanding abilities. Rich can easily make up a Paragon Prc to emulate the Dashing Swordsmen Prc. So Warlord. |
| The_Mess04-12-08, 11:34 PM | Honestly, can you see calling Elan "Warlord"? That's hours of laughs right there! |
| The Vorpal Tribble04-12-08, 11:51 PM | Heyas, for you OOTS fans I have a whole page of Order of the Stick-style psionic stuff: Order of the Pstick Avatars (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1569977&postcount=9) |

Will he be forced to follow Nale's example and become a multiclass? Or he could be left out of the change, following 3.5 rules in a 4th world. |
| BadCatMan04-13-08, 12:56 AM | Perhaps 4th edition is what happens when the Snarl gets out? |
