Psychic weapon master, why psychic warrior? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I´ve recently printed out the psychic weaponmaster class, and I think it is a somewhat intiresting class, combining psionics with the old style weapon master and get whole lot of kick ass. Originally I thought this prestige class was tailor made to fit the psychic warrior, which at first glance it appears to be you get a Bab of +5 when you get your 1st 3rd lvl power, and the smattering of feats which is the requirement are easy to get when you are a PW. After doing that idiot thing called thinking which I find myself doing more often than not, I suddenly felt that a somewhat tweaked Psion/Fighter/Illithid slayer/Psychic weapon master, would be more powerful for this particular prestige class in the long run since you get more base powerpoints and more(But diffirent) powers, however you get more bonus PP´s for your high wisdom if you go for straight PW/PWM, and a higher base manifester level. This may or may not belong to the character optimization thread but can somebody tell me why I feel this way? And for you professional numbercrunchers out there what would be more potent at a quick glance? In case I die in savage tides and take up a concept that incorporates this prestige class I may want to have my numbers straight.:P

Also for those who want to know the Psychic weapon master is available on the wizards site just type it in the search wizards window and you´ll find it easy.

Fighter 2/Psion 6 can get into psychic weapon master alright. After all, a fighter 2/psion 6 has just as many bonus feats as a psychic warrior 8. I suppose the question is -- which discipline do you go with? The psychic warrior has an amalgamation of discipline-specific powers, and sometimes powers that appear nowhere on any discipline list, such as Expansion, that are almost perfect for a self-buffing gish. I suppose the closest thing to it for a generic psion is the egoist, but they lack some nice psychic warrior mobility powers.

Still, I think fighter 2/psion 6 is a viable way of going psychic weapon master. Some thoughts on the comparison

Fighter 2/Psion 6 Psychic Warrior 8
BAB +5 +6
Saves Fort +5 Ref +2 Will +5 Fort +6 Ref +2 Will +2
Avg HP 30.5 + (8 x con) 39.5 + (8 x con)
PP 35 + (3 x int) 19 + (4 x wis)
Powers 11 8
MPL 3 3

Anyway, though, the psion-based psychic weapon master will still have some issues. For instance psion-based psychic weapon master doesn't get Psionic Lion's Charge without using Expanded Knowledge in an already feat-intensive build, and pouncing is a very nice ability for a frontliner.

Overall, I'd say that a psion-based psychic weapon master is a possiblity, but a psychic warrior definitely has arguments on its side. Either way could work.

What about later levels? If we add those ten levels of PWM, we would get 6th level psion powers as opposed to that one 5th level PW power, and the base powerpoint reserve would be a tad bigger, and if you would be a telepath(Unlikely but intiresting concept), you would not have to pay the feat for schism. And with one improved manifester feat you´d be able to temp(very shortly) as a blaster, or play any other multirole for that matter.

Of course, the psion list isn't as hot as the psychic warrior's when it comes to self-buffs and general gish spells, except for a few egoist effects. Expansion, Reach, Psionic Lion's Charge, Form of Doom, and so on are just the tip of the iceberg.

Really, as the Psychic Weapon Master isn't a manifesting-heavy class, you're better served by the Psychic Warrior - his powers cost less, since he gets psion powers earlier in level (typically), which offsets the pp pool a bit.

For example, biofeedback is 1 psywar / 2 psion. I'd say stay PsyWar, personally, as you're also losing fewer ML, which helps with dispels, as you're already opening yourself up to being dispel-bait as a self-buffer.

Pick up Practiced Manifester and your ML is 19, vs the Psion's 17.

All pointers I had never thought of.

I actually like for this fighter 6 (using Education)/warmind 6/psychic weapon master 8.

You get all 10 levels of manifesting, enough bonus fighter feats to actually do stuff with, and SWEEPING STRIKE! :D :D :D

Of course, you have fewer PP and you don't get the high-level warmind or psychic weapon master abilities.

If you are doing that why not just fighter 10/warmind 10, would in all likeyhood be more powerful imo. Or fighter 6/Warmind 10/Psychic weaponmaster 4?

I like that idea. It's certainly very elegant. My one concern though -- you don't get into psychic weapon master until level 12, or possibly level 13. That means that either you've been playing rather gimped with a nonmagical, nonpsionic crystal weapon until level 12, at which point you can take it up to +1, or you've been investing in a magical or psionic weapon, which you'll have to sell/give to a friend/whatever to really get psychic weapon master benefits. What's your approach to that problem?
