I just need confirmation for a game I'm playing at the moment. The Pyrokineticist's powers, such as, say, Nimbus, do not work underwater, correct?

It works underwater. No reason why it shouldn't. A wizard's fireball spell works underwater too.

Oh.

I believe I owe someone an apology, thanks for the swift response.

WizO's, lockhammer?

You might want to consider a level check or something, a wizard's fireball does take a spellcraft check to cast underwater.

From SRD: Spells or spell-like effects with the fire descriptor are ineffective underwater unless the caster makes a Spellcraft check (DC 20 + spell level). If the check succeeds, the spell creates a bubble of steam instead of its usual fiery effect, but otherwise the spell works as described. A supernatural fire effect is ineffective underwater unless its description states otherwise.

You're a big bubbling nimbus of steam.

Sucks to be you underwater. :D

The closest equivalent would be a Psicraft check, DC 20 + effective spell level, for the psi-like abilities. However, the SRD doesn't list effective spell levels for any of the pyrokineticist's psi-like abilities...

Steam can scald you pretty badly. Notice that it "otherwise works as normal". I'd always interpreted that as "it still does damage and has its normal effects, but just looks different".

My DM would jump all over this as.. "you take damage from the scalding steam and vision is hampered."

Makes sense I guess even if slightly mean.

Note to Pyro.. do NOT go anywhere near water - especially UNDERwater.

Even though the Nimbus of Fire specifically states that it doesn't harm the Pyrokineticist who produces it? Also, would his fire resistance apply? (And probably remind him that if fire resistance doesn't protect me underwater, it doesn't protect NPCs or monsters underwater, either.)

Seriously.

"So what, the hot steam causes harm to me and yet the blazing inferno doesn't?"

Good point re: fire resistance. It would be a vision thingee that he'd go for.

As above.

As above.

If you really want to screw with the DM though, you could be a kineticist of a different element (ice, sound, acid, and electrical are all options posted here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625e)

Yet another reason to play a pyro.

Yeah, but imagine the fun you could have underwater with the variant kineticists...the electrokineticist, for example, becomes pure madness :D The cryo is the only one who might get in trouble underwater... encasing yourself in a rock-hard ice block tends to have some disadvantages, too :).
