I can't find mention. The text states, "You cannot take the form of any creature that has a template." What is a template? |

In our campaign, we still use them pretty much as they are described in the spell/power description, but houserule as follows: (1) you keep your own BAB (2) you don't get the monster's natural attack routine (eg: bite, claw, claw, tail). So you will have number of attacks based on BAB. We treat this as an extension of the "extra limbs does not give you any extra advantage" line (i forget the exact phrase). (3) but you do get the rest of the usual things: natural AC, natural weapons, strength/dex/con, get extraordinary abilities (eg poison), get reach/size. This seems to stop the overpowered hydra form, roper form, etc by limiting natural attack routine. Still very useful for stealth purposes, and still very useful in melee (eg: treant doing 2d6+9 damage and reach 15' is nice).... just not uberduper good (eg: 10 head hydra form with 10 attacks) I think templates are quite rare: eg lycanthrope & celestial are described as templates in MMI (I think). Stuff like dire animals are not templates, pretty sure. |

I can't find mention. The text states, "You cannot take the form of any creature that has a template." What is a template? A template is something like celestial, lycanthrope, phrenic, fiendish, etc. You use your own Base Attack. The power doesn't say you gain it, ergo you keep your own. You use the new form's damage capabilities - this is where it says "You acquire the physical qualities of the new form while retaining your own mind. Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings, to a maximum speed of 120 feet for flying or 60 feet for nonflying movement), natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws or a bite), racial bonuses on skill checks, racial bonus feats, and any anatomical qualities (presence or absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth)" It's a strong power, but by limiting what forms are allowed, it doesn't have to be game-breaking. |
