Hi guy.

I am a bit confused about the power Psychic reformation and rechoosing feats.

Lets say I have reached a new level, and am now eligible to take a feat I was not able to take before. If I use Psychic Reformation can I replace a feat I took at an earlier level for the feat I want now?

Thanks in advance for any help!

No. If you could not take the feat at an earlier level, then you cannot take the feat now using psychic reformation.

The power simply allows you to make a different choice for a previous level. Your character must remain legal. A 3rd level psion with 3 separate feats that all require him to have a manifester level of 3 or higher is not legal.

1. With this 4th level power isn't it possible to have just about any feat in the game?

2. What is the math on the cost per feat? Can someone post an example?

3. Doesn't this feat work for all feats not just psionic ones? So I can have two weapon fighting, shape soulmeld, imprint stone, exanded knowledge(any power), metapsionic feats, and golden ice whenever I want? As long as I pay the xp cost and qualify for the feat at a lower level?

1. No, you still have to meet the prerequisites for each feat normally, and the power doesn't give you more feat slots.

2. The cost per feat varies greatly depending on the level you learned it at, and how many other feats you're changing at the same time.

3. It works for any kind of feat. The feat still has to be in your game in order for you to use it. You can't use psychic reformation to learn Touch Of Golden Ice unless your DM is using the Book Of Exalted Deeds in your game.

Any feat you qualify for. A level 8 Psion isn't getting Improved Critical or Greater Weapon Specialization, for example. He can give both of them to his level 12 Fighter buddy, though.

2. What is the math on the cost per feat? Can someone post an example?
Depends on what level you are and how many feats you want to swap. You have to go down to the last level that you could've selected the feat you wanted. So, if a level 15 Psion wants to grab two Expanded Knowledges and it doesn't matter what feats he drops, it'll only cost him 50 XP. However, if he wants to replace the Combat Manifestation he took at level 1 with Overchannel, that'll cost 750 XP.

Now you're thinking with portals! I mean, that's absolutely right. But the XP cost is sufficiently prohibitive that it wouldn't pay off to do it very often. Oh, and you can use it to reallocate skill points and powers known (which is mostly what I used it for).

You raise an interesting question with Touch of Golden Ice, though. I imagine, if you did something to lose Exalted status, you could get rid of the Exalted feats that go away. Personally, I don't think you should be able to Atone and then use Psychic Reformation to put them back; in my game, they'd still be dead feats (your Psychic Reformation overwrote your Atonement along with everything else). However, what if you use Psychic Reformation to get rid of all your Exalted feats, then did something evil (which would normally end your Exalted status), then put those Exalted feats back? Personally, I might let that work, if you Atone (as the Cleric spell Atonement) before getting the Exalted feats back (Psychic Reformation overwrites your guilt)...

This power is, I suspect, one of the most heavily houseruled. I know of one DM who does not allow you to use it to gain a feat that can only be taken at first level (because you are not first level, even if you are reforming the choices you might have made at first level).

The feats I don't allow (except with a major DM discussion) are those that depend on the approval or actions of others (despite the definition of a feat as being a personal milestone, accomplishment, or discovered capability). Examples would include: Rokugan ancestral feats (you can't retroactively change your ancestors, nor change the boon that they chose to grant long before you were born), feats such as Hathran Born (you can't manipulate your mind in such a way as to cause all the Hathran witches to remember raising you and granting you membership in their circle), exalted feats (specified in BoED that they are granted by celestials, or at least that the status that lets you obtain them is bestowed, not that I would touch the 3.0 BoED anyway). A player who asks if he can use Reformation to take an Illithid Heritage feat (altering your mind so your grandfather becomes a mind flayer) would be dismissed from the table for being too lame to make a contribution to the party. The power says you can make different choices for previous levels, so the change must be based on an alternate choice that you, not others, could have made.

Some feats are negotiable, but might not be very effective when you first take them. Favored in House is one example: Can you rewire your mind in such a way as to cause all the members of your far-flung house to owe you favors and consider you a more valuable asset to the house? Maybe, you could rework your speech patterns so you are smoother in asking for favors, and/or change you attitude so you are more of a credit to your house. But it will take a while for word of your new status to spread within the house so you may have to level up with the feat in place before you start calling in favors. The reverse would not be true: Reforming this feat out will cause your favored status to drop instantly. Just like in politics, it takes a lifetime of service to climb to the top, but just one scandal to fall totally out of favor.

And to give my answer to a question that, for some reason, occasionally migrates to the psionics board: Vow of Poverty. No, I would not allow you to reform the feat out, loosing its restrictions, use convenient items, then reform it back in. That is so in violation of the stated intent of the feat. If you are exalted and are even looking for loopholes, then you probably need to loose that status.

edit: Semi-sniped by AntiDjinn

Exalted stuff is kinda messed up. It really requires a good DM and mature players (non-munchkins) to use it successfully.

Anyway, a character can only get an Exalted feat if the gods like him enough, and the DM controls the gods, so ... . It's all up to the DM. It's easy to imagine any given DM saying, in response to any of combination of Exalted feats and psyref, "you have angered the gods with your shenanigans! You have lost exalted status and can never again attain it!"

you have angered the gods with your shenanigans!
Now I want a reason to say that to a player.
