| larrycrack04-06-07, 04:15 PM | Has anyone tackled this spell yet? It says "as Glyph of Warding" except the following and adds an augmentation. Glyph of Warding has a material component and cost. Psionic powers don't use material components for the most part. And those that do are never cost related (like empowering a sword and so forth). However, a psionic version of Glyph of Warding seems, well, cheap since there would never be a reason for a Wizard to cast the spell if someone in the group has this version. Also.. what's with the augmentation, the die type is different than the blast version of the Glyph. Also, I assume the Spell Glyph version would allow you to store powers. Any thoughts on this power? |
| Ishindri04-06-07, 06:01 PM | Ah, Complete Psionic... *bangs head repeatedly against desk* Well, CompPsi is filled with material that isn't particularly well thought out, and this is one of those things. It does seem like it needs a nerf to compensate for the lack of a material component. As for the augmentation, I guess that either they couldn't be bothered to get the die types correct (judging by the rest of the book, not surprising) or you just slap the additional damage on (i.e. Xd8+Xd10). If it autoscales, which according to the description of the power, it should (carries over all attributes of the spell) that makes it even more overpowered, since you get autoscaling damage with an augment slapped on. As for the spell version, I'd just houserule it to work with powers 3rd level or below. All in all, it seems like a hastily thought out, badly executed, overpowered Psionic X of a power. Then again, I'm an amateur DM, so... I have no idea if I'm right or not ;) |
| Lycanthromancer04-07-07, 02:37 PM | And *that* ladies and gentlemen, is Complete Psionic in a nutshell. |
| DMsDelight04-07-07, 02:57 PM | It's ironic, y'know...I'm a Psionics nut, always playing psionic if I can, and using Psi NPC's in my game, advocating psionics at all times...and yet I STILL find Complete Psionic not that great. Not a whole lot of useful material unless I want to confuse someone even more. XPH came out...fantastic great, LOVED it...Eberron material came out with Psionics...WOOHOO, I celebrated. Complete Psionic came out...and I stared blankly for like an hour. Some of the material was useful, but others were like trying to relearn Psionics when I already can tell the rules and text cover to cover. Someone should fix it :p |
| Lycanthromancer04-07-07, 03:16 PM | If it were OGL, then I'd take a shot, but it's not, so I can't. Of course, there's nothing saying that I can't take what's there, change the names to protect the innocent (namely, me), then fix it to where it's usable. That'd be nice and legal...yes? |
| DMsDelight04-07-07, 03:26 PM | Heh, go for it. *Spell-up Lycanthromancer* I wish you good luck...you're gonna need it :D |
| Ichor Spellka04-08-07, 01:25 PM | I've used it pretty extensively for my erudite spy character. Mostly storing control sound, ego whips, energy bursts, etc. on pieces of cloth I lay around as improvised traps while I sneak around. My favourite so far was making a chain full of glyphs, then tk thrusting it at the BBEG's collosal sized enforcers our DM had set up. Cluster bomb. Large crater being the result. Last time that adversary gives us 5 days to decide whether or not to give up our souls or suffer eternally. We've added an xp cost for the power, 8xp per glyph, much like the item creation gp to xp conversion. It's made it a little more manageable. |
| Ishindri04-09-07, 10:59 AM | On a whim, I went and rewrote a (I think) balanced version of the power. Basically, it has the same augment as its CompPsi counterpart, but with 1d8 instead of 1d10. Also, I added an option for augmentation of a stored power, as well as (in my opinion, the best part) a flavor rewrite, to make it less of a Psionic X. Judging by Lycanthromancer's post, I don't think I'm allowed to post it up here, but if you'd like to take a look, PM me and I'll send you a copy. That's allowed, right? |
| Zemyla04-09-07, 01:47 PM | Actually, it kind of fits. Don't Aboleth Savants, from Lords of Madness, get some kind of glyph-related powers? And yet aboleths are highly psionic. Maybe you learned it from an aboleth. |
| Red1204-09-07, 03:43 PM | If it were OGL, then I'd take a shot, but it's not, so I can't. Of course, there's nothing saying that I can't take what's there, change the names to protect the innocent (namely, me), then fix it to where it's usable. That'd be nice and legal...yes? I believe that you could make revisions as long as you dont make it so it is usable w/o complete psionic. Example: Illithid Heritage Feat X: Remove "expend psionic focus" Add: This feat costs 5 PP to use. |
| Lycanthromancer04-09-07, 06:06 PM | I'd have to rewrite the whole book anyway, considering how much errata it needs. Most unfortunate, really. |
