| Count Nerindil Van Seraph06-03-07, 08:01 PM | I'm looking into playing a pyrokineticist (specificly swashbuckler/pyro) in an upcoming game. It looks like a pretty solid PrC, but I have some questions about the fire lash ability. Here is the specific wording from the SRD: Fire Lash (Ps) A pyrokineticist gains the ability to fashion a 15-foot-long whip of fire from unstable ectoplasm as a move-equivalent action. She takes no damage from a fire lash she creates, and if she releases her hold, it immediately dissipates. The lash deals 1d8 points of fire damage to a target within 15 feet on a successful ranged touch attack. A pyro can take Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization (if she otherwise meets the prerequisites) in conjunction with the fire lash, as well as any feats that apply to the use of a standard whip. The whip remains in existence as long as the pyrokineticist holds it. These are my Questions: 1) Can I add my strenght bonust to the damage? How about my INT bonus (as a swashbukler)? 2) What type of weapon is it? Being as that it is made of flame, I would think it would be a light weapon, but whips are (for some odd reason) one handed. 3) Can I add the extra damage from my Weapon Afire ability to the whips damage? 4) Can I make attacks of oportunity with it? That's about it. Thanks in advance, The Count :dragon: |

I presume 1-h, but since its a whip, it can still be weapon finessed 3. No 4. Of course. Why not. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph06-03-07, 08:14 PM | 4. Of course. Why not. Because You can't with a standard whip. Whip A whip deals nonlethal damage. It deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes). Using a whip provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon. You can make trip attacks with a whip. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the whip to avoid being tripped. When using a whip, you get a +2 bonus on opposed attack rolls made to disarm an opponent (including the roll to keep from being disarmed if the attack fails). You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a whip sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon for you. Come to think of it, do I get the the ability to trip and the bonus to disarm with the fire lash? Also, does using it provoke an AoO like a standard whip? |
| Kitaki06-03-07, 11:55 PM | For simplicity sake I would treat it as a whip except that it deals lethal fire damage instead of subdual damage, and you don't get your strength to damage/ |

| Dead_Weasel06-04-07, 05:08 PM | I personally add "identical in all ways (except visually) to a [whip] of a size appropriate for its wielder," as the Soulknife's Mindblade. I do this to reduce debate on what can and cannot be done with it. However, this particular modification is not necessary to answer your questions. Yes. Yes. One-handed. Yes. No. |
