Okay, first time actually generating a Psion in 3.5.

I am correctly interpreting that Psions no longer automatcially get psicrystals, but only through Psicrystal Affinity? I am thrown off by the fact Psicrystal is sat next to the Psion, like they were in 3.0 when they were a class feature, but as far as I can tell, they're not anymore...?

100% correct. Psions no longer gain them as standard class features, and can only gain them through the psicrystal affinity feat.

Its generally considered an editing error that they are still placed near psions.

Thanks. Thought so!

Good old copy and paste...where would we be without you...?

Absolutely no one gets a psicrystal without the Psicrystal Affinity feat.

Except when they do.

See the Erudite for details.

Although...they get it as a *bonus feat* so...

The erudite gets the feat as a bonus feat, he does not get the psicrystal as a class feature. Even he needs the feat to get the pet rock. When someone walks up and lays Feat Leech on an erudite he looses access to his psicrystal just like everyone else. If said erudite also has Psionic Body, he gets the +2 hit points for having the psionic feat Psicrystal Affinity. No one gets the rock without the feat.

Which is why I think that a psicrystal not gaining HD for having a psychic warrior and/or lurk as a master is an oversight on the part of the copy/paste regime. That, and why psionic PrCs should advance psicrystals, too (as they aren't class features, but feat features - and even the feat says 'psionic classes,' not 'psions/wilders only').

The copy/paste of "+1 ML" should advance psicrystal is a fallacy. Psicrystals advance by psionic class levels - not by manifester level. Ergo, the statement is accurate. Gaining a +1 to your manifester level should not advance your psicrystal. Period. You would, essentially, get a double bonus - your class level, as explained above, and the +1 Manifester Level.

A soulknife 5 / psion 5 / elocator 10 has an owner level of 20 for psicrystal affinity - not 12 (his manifester level). The +1 manifester level class feature should not factor into the equation; the class level already handles that.

If +1 manifester level also increased your owner level for psicrystal affinity, you would have an owner level of 27 - obviously not what was intended.

Right, exactly.

What I was stating was that in any Psi PrC that gives manifester level bonuses, you have a statement saying that it does not advance the abilities of a psicrystal because it is a 'class feature' of being a psion/wilder/etc.

Which isn't right, as it's not a class feature; it's a feat that specifically states that the psicrystal gains ability based on levels in psionic classes. Psi PrCs are psionic classes, so they benefit a psicrystal (as psicrystals are specifically stated to be class features).

Why is Wizards still adding that mistake into every psi PrC they make? Most everyone else does, too, unfortunately.
