Quick Question: Urban Strider [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-06-08, 11:51 PM I was curious, does this power (found in the Complete Psionic and probably Races of Destiny) work only in urban environments?

01-07-08, 12:38 AM There are no restrictions on when you may manifest this power, but some of its benefits would only happen in an urban environment.

You gain a +5 competence bonus on all balance and jump checks. Whoopie, but there are no restrictions.

You don't need to make balance checks running or charging across a sloped surface. Also no restrictions for environment. Not having to make a balance check is way better than a +5 bonus. A city, or other area with paved or worked substrates, is where you are more likely to encounter sloped surfaces that are still flat enough for charging, but you could use this ability on the natural stone of a cavern floor.

You autosucceed on jump checks of less than 5 feet. You can make standing jumps as though they were running jumps. Again, no restrictions for environment stated. Just more likely to be useful on rooftops than anywhere else.

You can move at your full normal speed through crowds. In many situations this is the single best effect of the power, though if you are like the average psychotic adventurer, the townies tend to move out of your way in any case. No restriction is stated, but urban settings are generally the only place where you will find crowds. Note that a crowd is not the same thing as a swarm, pack, or phalanx of spear and shield bearers. You don't get to define any collection of creatures as a crowd.

The 8 point augmentation is the only part of the power that specifies city surfaces. You can use it anywhere, but the benefit only applies in a city. Way overpriced too; for the same 9 points or less you could Teleport, D-Door, or Fly.

01-07-08, 04:45 AM Thanks for the response. That was sort of what I thought, though the first sentence after the italicized description of the power seemed to specify the location it works in, and I wasn't really sure about it. Having it work only in cities would be kinda sucky, anyways.
