| Vengeful_Deity07-16-07, 07:09 PM | I'm a big confused on how the rules cross over between Psionics and Core rules for Item Creation. Essentially what I'm looking for is a ring that functions like a Ring of Spell Storing/Ring of Counterspells (In the sense that I can cast a certain spell level/power level into it) but activates as a contingent spell use (i.e. Immediately upon being attacked). I've got a Monk/Fist of Zuoken that is looking to get the benefits of the Expansion power, augmented with 6 PP to achieve Huge size immediately upon entering combat. 1) Is this legal? 2) How much would it cost and what are the steps/required powers? |
| InkBlot07-16-07, 07:28 PM | First off, counterspelling doesn't work with psionics. Second, you can use psionics to make any magic item. It implies this in the Expanded Psionics Handbook, and flat out states it in the Magic Item Compendium. If your character isn't the one making the item, don't worry about the required powers and stuff. Just ask your DM if it's availabe somewhere in the game world. If your character is making it, again you have to ask your DM. I would suggest the following, for minor/normal/major rings of power storing. Faint/Moderate/Strong telepathy; ML 5th/9th/17th; Craft Universal Item, thieving mindlink; Price 18,000/50,000/200,000 gp. The rings should probably store "power points worth of powers" instead of levels of powers. So you could have 5 power points of powers in a minor ring, 9 power points of powers in a normal ring, and 19 power points of powers in a major ring. |

I'll restate my questions: 1) The "Magic Item Creation" rules are far more indepth than the Psionic Item Creation rules, and I am unsure of myself when comparing and extrapolating between the two. How do I calculate base cost for creation of such an item described above? 2) I'm not looking for a Ring of Power storing (which is pretty obvious if you read the whole post. I'm looking for a ring of "power storing" with contingent use as to gain IMMEDIATE benefit of a power upon meeting pre-set requirements, as per the contingency spell. Can rings such as these be created legally in a by the book game? Essentially... I've got an idea for the first round of combat which include Psionic Lion's Charge to give me a pounce attack. I need my swift action for Psionic Lion's charge. And beings that Expansion is such a short duration, I don't want to cast it ahead of time before a battle, or I'll be wasting Power points. |

I'd double the cost of a relevant contingent spell. This accounts for the halving that you get for turning it into an item slot, and quadrupling it to make it reusable (but not reusable without recharging); the quadrupling is just a guess on my part. This produces a ring that has a spell or power cast into it that triggers at a pre-set condition. Price it with a 4th level power (1+6pp = the price of a 4th level power) and you're good to go. This is all ad-hoc, of course. |

The contingency spell has to be 21st manifester level in order to allow 4th level spells (1pp +6pp Augment= 7pp which is Psionic equivalent of 4th level). Where I really get hung up is the charges and use/day. Really I only need it to function once per day so I used this formula. Use-activated/Continuous 6 x 21 x 2000 = 252000 Charges per day 252000/(5/1) = 50400 + 7500 for the 15 XP cost of Psionic Contingency. So I'm looking at 57900? Does that look right? would that do what I need it to do? |
| CrimsonDeath07-16-07, 10:31 PM | Do you set the trigger when you fill the ring, or when you craft it? |
| Vengeful_Deity07-16-07, 10:37 PM | Do you set the trigger when you fill the ring, or when you craft it? For my purposes either would work, I'd only get one that actives at the beginning of a suprise round or first round of a combat...and one that has a clever enough trigger. I think it would be up to the individual DM though. I don't think anything like this has been published. |
