Shattering Mind Blank? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Every Telepath or other Psion that uses (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting] type powers hates the unilateral unfairness that is Mind Blank (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersGtoP.html#mind-blank-psionic). I suspect that game designers had this in mind when they created the power Shatter Mind Blank (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersQtoW.html#shatter-mind-blank).

The question I have for the boards is, even if the formerly Mind Blank-ed creature fails its save, and fails its spell resistance, AND fails the caster level check, … say all that is possible … how are you to practically detect and know WHEN someone has Mind Blank up and running in a combat situation?

How can you tell the difference between someone who simply has high saves and someone who has Mind Blank up? Without meta-gaming. Who wants to guess and waste 9 power points on Shatter Mind Blank if the creature in question does or does not have MB active?

Is there and easy way to detect Mind Blank in and during combat? (i.e. is way that does not drain too many resources or power points and a way that does not take more than a round at most, and preferably core).

Use any mind-affecting power, then roll a Psicraft check:

20 + power level - Identify a power that’s already in place and in effect. You must be able to see or detect the effects of the power. No action required. No retry.

I thought about that, but then I thought how in the world would one see or detect the effects of a Mind Blank already in place?

Edit: You detect it by realizing that your power failed. You can always sense whether a power succeeded or failed, just like your target always knows when he made a save.

There are a few abilities, scattered around in various books, that give you the ability to detect magic at will (but faster).

Karsus, hubris in blood, grants the ability to continually sense the presence of auras without concentration. If you do concentrate, then on the first round you detect number and location of each aura. On the second round you determine the strength and school of each aura without having to make a skill check. Karsus is a vestige, 3rd level IIRC.

There's the Vatic Sight feat from PHBII. It grants the ability to use detect magic at will. I believe it allows you to constantly sense the presence of auras, but I'd have to double check.

There's at least one other feat like Vatic Sight. It's from FR and is available at 1st level

Then there's the possibility of building/buying goggles of detect psionics. Even if they don't already exist in a book (I'd have to check), they're a pretty basic magic item. Since all it does is let you use a cantrip at will, they should be dirt cheap. The same cost as a hand of the mage. Maybe a little more if it lessens the rounds of concentration needed, or operates continually.

I never understood the need for Shatter Mind Blank when you can just take dispel instead. its got no save, no power resistance and you can augment for the cast lvl check, so at 9th lvl (when you can cast Shatter Mind Blank) you are rolling 1d20 + 17 (9 for caster lvl + 8 for 4 point augment).

*edit* and as a bonus you have a chance of dispeling anything else he has going at the time

Bacris & InkBlot,

As InkBlot stated, by the power failing.
You know the power failed but I don't believe you know why it failed. At least I cannot find any rules for it in the Expanded Psionics Handbook. I could be missing something of course :)

As to Detect Psionics,
Round 1: Presence or absence of psionic auras <no clue as to what specific power>
Round 2: Numbers and strength <still no clue as to what specific power>
Round 3: With Psicraft check you can now determine the discipline of the power <still don't know specific power>

As to using this in in-game combat are you really going to waste three rounds to sort of know that the creature in question has some Telepathy Discipline power up and running?

As to the other options InkBlot mentioned I don't have those books so I cannot make any comments. I mostly looking for common core possibilities anyways.

I guess what he wanted to say is that shatter mind blank is such a horribly bad power that there is absolutely no reason to take it. Everything it can, dispel psionics can do and then some more. However, Ryuoch is wrong about one thing. A dispel psionics augmented to 9 PP at ML 9 should only allow a dispel check of 1d20 + 9. While you could spent so many PP to gain a bonus higher than your ML, the bonus is always equal to your ML, capped by the amount of your augmentation.

Anyways, dispel psionics is available 2 levels earlier than shatter mind blank and can remove mind blank even better because it doesn't allow PR or a save. Additionally, you can remove other stuff as well, or surpress magic/psionic items, and so on and so forth. This is what the level 5 power can never actually do. It's a very narrow one-trick pony power - and it's not even good at what it does.

Anyways, if you run into a hostile level 13+ psion/wilder or level 16+ psychic warrior at level 9 or so, you're already in for a crapload of trouble. :D

That's probably the way it should work, that may be the way it was intended, and it is the way I would house-rule it. However, that's not the way it was written (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/dispelPsionics.htm).

Ra-Tiel,

I completely understand Ryuoch's point, I was asking why did the game designers create Shatter Mind Blank in the first place since Dispel Psionics seems to work so much better and cover more ground?

Bacris & InkBlot,

You know the power failed but I don't believe you know why it failed.

The psicraft check tells you why it failed.

You get to make a psicraft check when you detect the effect of the power. The effect of the power is your power failing. So when your power fails you get to roll a psicraft check to figure out that it failed due to mindblank. Do you see now?

Ok, as a conclusion I think we can say that shatter mind blank is definitively not worth the hassle. Regarding noticing if someone has this or a similar protection active, I think the only quick way to find out is either manifesting some kind of charm or dominate and give him a telepathic order, or use an effect similar to arcane sight.

Not to mention that Shatter Mind Blank has a range of only 30 feet (a 30 foot burst centered on you and you don't even get the option to avoid hitting Mind Blanks on friendly targets in the area) while Dispel Psionics has a range of 100 feet + 10 feet/MK.

And to get within 30 feet means you have to find the target. People remember that Mind Blank affects all mind-affecting, but forget that it also blocks all attempts at scrying short of Metafaculty. If you happen to know that power and care to drop 5KXP to find your target then you are in business, if not, then you are only going to get into shattering range if the target is finding you. Shatter Mind Blank may solve a telepath's problems with Mind Blank (if he cares to use it) but does nothing to address the seer's problems.

It is actually written in a way that you have to assume which way it will work. If you assume the more powerful way then on your own head be it, if you instead assume the more reasonable way then you are still justified within the rules and dont have a big problem.

Choose wisely ;)

Look at the augment. For every extra PP you spend, the bonus increases by 2. Not the maximum bonus. Just the bonus. Barring Rule 0, that doesn't seem to leave much room for interpretation.

Note the clarification, "to a maximum bonus of +20 for a 5-point expenditure". The base cost is 5 PP, and this refers to a 5-point augment. That requires at least ML 10, the normal cap for your bonus on the check. So, the bonus on your dispel check is +10 (from manifester level) +10 (from the augment), for a total of +20, as described in the parenthetical note.

The augment says both. Are you saying that one of the two is definately incorrect? If so, why?

Note the clarification, "to a maximum bonus of +20 for a 5-point expenditure".

Yes, do note the part in parenthesis ;) It says 'maximum bonus'.

This extra bit only really makes sense if the augment moves the maximum bonus that the ability can provide.

The power says both and doesnt really make sense as written. You can assume one of the two conclusions, but one of them is obviously problematic while the other is not.

Again, choose wisely.

I think Shatter Mind Blank needs to drop the caster level check and the PR to become interesting in the light of Dispel Psionics. A failed will save should be all it takes for something as narrow as a counter-counter measure to be effective.

Even so, the idea that you would use 1 round in combat to "probe" with a [mind-affecting] power in order to roll psicraft and identify the mindblank, so that you can then shatter/dispel it afterwards, and then maybe in round 3 affect the target with something nasty and [mind-affecting] just seems terrible to me.

If you suspect counter-measures to be up at the start of combat, you should dispel by default as soon as you get a standard action, or use an alternative strategy like Astral Construct, or take defensive action if you don't know what to expect. After all, shattering mind blank does nothing against undead, constructs, certain plants etc. that are equally problematic to the telepath. If he has the tools to fight them, he should automatically have the tools to fight mind blanked foes. Also, what ever threat that can produce Mind Blank will very likely have high will saves anyway. So just use something like Fuse Flesh or Disintegrate if you think [mind-affecting] will be blocked.

Another way to handle this (has been proposed multiple times) would be to use feats. With a metapsionic, instead of having to use one power just to drop an opponent's Mind Blank and then follow it up with attacks, you would simply metapsionic a power so that it sneaks past the MB. In addition to not duplicating an existing power, it would have a huge advantage: With the current power the subject knows that some mental effect is going to follow (you would not bother to shatter his MB otherwise) and so will try to mount a defense before that happens. With a power that simply meta's its way past the MB, the subject will become aware of it when it hits (if that, subjects failing a save vs. a mind-affected power do not know they have been affected).

Breaching Power [Metapsionic]

Benefit: When you use this feat you must expend your psionic focus. The Mind-Affecting, Charm, Compulsion, and Scrying descriptors are stripped away from the affected power, only with respect to Mind Blank. The power ignores Mind Blank or similar power, spell, or supernatural effects if you succeed at a manifester level check (d20 + your manifester level vs. 11 + manifester level of Mind Blank, no level maximum on either side). This provides no benefit if the power would not normally be blocked by Mind Blank. Innate immunity or inappropriateness of a target are not bypassed (e.g., you can not use this feat to dominate a door or other naturally mindless target). The Mind Blank, itself, is not affected. The subject has its normal chance to determine that it has been targeted based on circumstance and the specifics of the power. For example, a subject targeted with a Breaching Remote Viewing has the normal chance to detect the quasi-real viewpoint, but will not automatically know that its Mind Blank is not preventing observation. No other parameters of the power are altered (saving throw, power resistance, range, etc.). Metapsionic cost = 4 points.

Shattering Power [Metapsionic]

Prerequisite: Breaching Power

Benefit: As Breaching Power, except that if the subject is affected by the power its Mind Blank is dispelled. In addition, it may not manifest Mind Blank again as long as it is under the effect of a Shattering Power unless it succeeds at a manifester level check (as above, but reversed). Items that generate a continuous Mind Blank affect are suppressed until your manifester level is overcome, but even restoration of a Mind Blank does not remove the effect of an ongoing power. Metapsionic cost = 6 points.

Note: May need some work. It still leaves Mind Blank as a force to be reckoned with. It also does not steal too much of Metafaculty's thunder.

The augment says both. Are you saying that one of the two is definately incorrect? If so, why?
In context, it is not necessary that either of them be incorrect.

"For every additional power point you spend, the bonus on your dispel check increases by 2"

When do you augment a power? At the moment that you manifest it. At that moment, a particular Psion has a particular Manifester Level, and that's not changing. So, that's set. It's constant. It's either less than ten, or it's ten or greater. In either case, the power has already taken that information into account and said, "Okay, when you roll your dispel check, that's your bonus." Then, if your Manifester Level is high enough, you get to spend a few more power points. In that case, the power sayd, "Oh, and add this to your dispel check, too."

"(to a maximum bonus of +20 for a 5-point expenditure)"

You want to spend 11PP on Dispel Psionics? Sorry, can't do that. The base cost is 5, and you can only spend 5 extra PP to augment it. If you do, your dispel check is 1d20+20, and that's the best dispel check you're ever going to get out of this power.

Note that I don't believe this is the way the power should work, because it makes psionicists too good at dispelling things during the mid-levels. However, as written, that's what the power does.

The advantage of Shatter Mind Blank is that it's an area effect dispel that specifically targets Mind Blank.

Usually, when you use an area effect Dispel, you have no control whatsoever as to what effect gets dispelled. You go from highest level effect down to lowest level effect, and whatever effect fails its caster level check first is dispelled, and the dispel ends.

Shatter Mind Blank nukes Mind Blank, and nothing else, so when you use that, you're assured that the only spell that's getting blasted is the one you want blasted.

So, yes, it's not quite as good as Dispel Psionics in a few aspects (range, for instance), but when you're a telepath and you need to strip a few minds of their shieldings, and be sure that's what goes, Shatter Mind Blank is a bit better for the cost.

Sorry, I have to disagree. Shatter mind blank has so many inherent weaknesses, it's not even funny:

"Area: 30-ft.-radius burst centered on you"
This means that you're just too close to your targets. 30 ft is well within charging distance, and a expansioned character wielding a reach weapon could already possible full-attack you after a 5ft step.
"Saving Throw: Will negates"
Targets who can manifest or cast mind blank already pretty much have a good Will save (psychic warrior being the exception). So, your chances are pretty high that the power will be shrugged off without any effect.
"Power Resistance: Yes"
With power resistance as a power of equal level giving PR 12+ML, there is a very good defense against shatter mind blank. Against someone of equal level with the PR power running, you'd have to roll (assuming minimum ML level in both cases) 1d20+9 vs DC 21, or a 55% of outright failing.
You have to make a ML check.
This is the third defense against shatter mind blank you have to beat just to remove a single buff. You have to roll 1d20+your ML vs DC 11+ML of mind blank effect, or a 50% of outright failing.
Does not augment.
This is probably the worst, as the defenses against the power become potentially better with each level. Power resistance scales by ML and Will saves increase at least every 2nd (or every 3rd) level (not counting magic items or multiclassing), but you have the same low save DC (15+Int/Wis/Cha mod).

Also, why would you only want to remove a target's mind blank, and leave its metamorphosis, inertial armor, and freedom of movement untouched? In my opinion, a good chance of removing all buffs on a single target is way better than a slim chance of removing one buff on many targets.

However, as always: YMMV. ;)

They are essentially self contradictory without more information. If you 'assume' more information then you will be able to come to a conclusion, but you have to make that assumption in order to get anywhere. Once the assumption is made it will determine your final point.

I would suggest choosing the assumption differently if the one chosen initially leads to badness.
Ra-Tiel

Something I forgot in my previous post but that fits nicely into the "why you shouldn't take shatter mind blank list":

It is not selective. When you manifest this power, you're about to nuke your party's mind blanks just as well as those of your opponents. Also, often the fighter and rogue get mind blank to prevent someone from dropping a charm or dominate on them in the middle of combat and thus take away 1/4 of the party's total resources. If you now run up against an enemy wizard or psion and throw out shatter mind blank while the whole party is up against him, you're actually helping the enemy.

But something else: is the caster/manifester actually automatically immune to his own burst effects? I just wonder, because the power remains silent on this, and I generally don't think the caster/manifester is automatically immune to his own spells/powers. :thinks: Also... [...] A burst spell affects whatever it catches in its area, even including creatures that you can’t see. It can’t affect creatures with total cover from its point of origin (in other words, its effects don’t extend around corners). The default shape for a burst effect is a sphere, but some burst spells are specifically described as cone-shaped. A burst’s area defines how far from the point of origin the spell’s effect extends. [...]

Did you even read the rest of my post? I don't know how to explain it any more clearly. The phrase "the bonus increases by +2" and the phrase "to a maximum bonus of +20" occur in sufficiently different contexts that the existence of a "maximum bonus" need not imply that the +2 increase of bonus should be a +2 increase of maximum bonus, and the +2 increase of bonus need not imply that there does not exist a maximum bonus.

Sure, but your conclusion relies on an assumption. As such, if I reject your assumption then the argument stops at that point for the purposes of my argument.

The power can be read in two main different ways based on what assumptions you want to have. I choose to have the assumption that they missed a word in the first bit and the text afterwards is correct. It appears that you are choosing to assume that they didnt add text about what manifester level they will assume you will have at some point and, after you include that bit, you can work your way up to both being correct in that context if you look at it in a certain way.

I believe that my assumption is superior as it leads to a more balanced result ;)

Targets who can manifest or cast mind blank already pretty much have a good Will save (psychic warrior being the exception). So, your chances are pretty high that the power will be shrugged off without any effect.

That's true on one hand, and slightly poinless on the other hand. Yes, having a good will save will help stop Shatter Mind Blank...but it'll also stop anything else with a will save Mind Blank would protect you from anyways. Going against someone's good save pretty much always hurts, even if you can augment them.

Agreed. It could definitely have benefited from some augments. Like one that gives it range instead of being centered.

That's its main weakness, yes. But Widen can take care of that.
Assuming your telepath or seer spends one slot on a feat primarily for just this power. I agree that WIDEN POWER has its uses, but a shaper or kineticist would gain a greater general benefit from it.

That's true on one hand, and slightly poinless on the other hand. Yes, having a good will save will help stop Shatter Mind Blank...but it'll also stop anything else with a will save Mind Blank would protect you from anyways. Not necessarily. There are things that are stopped by mind blank that don't allow a save, for example discern location. Also, removing the need to make saves also eliminates the 5% chance for automatic failure, which is always a good thing.

I'm okay with this one. Raising ML isn't that hard.
Yes, but assuming an opponent with equal manifester/caster level you're always getting the short end of the stick.

Agreed. It could definitely have benefited from some augments. Like one that gives it range instead of being centered.
Agreed. But still this power would be subpar compared to dispel psionics.

Because my telepath doesn't care if you're a 20-tall super-armored engine of destruction and death, all he cares about is making your brains run out of your ears?
Maybe, but you're still spending an action on shatter mind blank, blowing your focus on it (assuming QUICKEN POWER), or using your schism's action on it (which suffers from a reduced ML). Maybe the hostile shaper's mind blank is gone now, but he can still shred you to pieces when metamorphosis'ed into a 12 headed hydra or something. Now, shatter mind blank did help you in what regard? :P
