| Grimmsfeld05-04-07, 03:01 AM | So, if any of you have poked your head into calronmoonflowers post for his Bladedancer, which itself is kind of a nifty design, will notice that the two of us have been having a nice little arguement originally stemming from how you're supposed to be able o gain the benifit from Expanded Knowledge. So, a couple of questions. 1. How do you interpret this line of Expanded Knowledge?Add to your powers known one additional power of any level up to one level lower than the highest-level power you can manifest. Do you understand it to mean you need to have at least one power known of a certain level to be able to gain a power of a level lower, or do you read it as such that you don't need to actually know a certain level of power, only that you need to have the potential to know a certain level of power to use Expanded Knowledge? 2. Does anyone allow power stones to be used like "one-shot staves" using the rule found on page 105 of Complete Psionic? 3. Does anyone allow being able to the use of power stones, or other such consumables to qualify for feats and prestige classes? |
| Millenia05-04-07, 04:01 AM | 1) I interpret this as allowing the manifester to only gain a power 1 less than what they can access. For instance, a level 3 psion can manifest up to level 2 powers, so if they take the feat they can only get a level 1 power - regardless of whether the psion took a level 2 power or not. 2) I myself interpreted the "manifest from another's power known" bit involving the Power Stone as letting you manifest it once per day without flushing it. Then again, my interpretations can be flawed. 3) No, I would not allow the use of items to qualify for a class that requires the -knowledge- of a power. It contradicts both the spirit and the letter of the rules. =/ |
| InkBlot05-04-07, 02:05 PM | 1. I interpret this as requiring you to actually know a power of X level, before using EK to learn a power of X - 1 level. So if you were a 5th level psion, but used all your power slots to learn 1st and 2nd level powers, then you can only use EK to learn 1st level powers. 2. I use the rule exactly as it is in Complete Psionics. I don't agree that that's a valid interpertation of the rule in the XPH, but it is a nice rule regardless. Spend some power points when you flush the stone and you get a greater effect. The power stone is still used up in the end. It's not effecient enough to use all the time, but I like options that allow players to make a dramatic last-ditch efforts. 3. Not consumables, no. I'm still on the fence about non-consumables as well. Luckily it hasn't come with in any game I've DMed or any character I've played. |
| Fafnir05-04-07, 02:26 PM | Mmmm... so let's say... A high level telepath uses Psychic Chirurgery on a level 17 PsyWarrior, bestowing the knowledge of True Mind Switch (or another level 9 power) on him. Can the Psywarrior now take EK to learn 8th level powers, since he knows AND is able to manifest a 9th level one? |
| InkBlot05-04-07, 03:26 PM | Nope. Psychic Chirurgery doesn't let you give people higher level powers. Transfer Knowledge: If desired, you can use this power to directly transfer knowledge of a power you know to another psionic character. You can give a character knowledge of a power of any level that she can manifest, even if the power is not normally on the character’s power list. Knowledge of powers gained through psychic chirurgery does not count toward the maximum number of powers a character can know per level. Psywars can't manifest 9th level powers, so you can't give a psywar True Mind Switch. |
