Soul knife and monk question [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-24-07, 04:26 AM I have a question for everyone. Why is it said that the soul knife and monk are weak/broken? I'm playing my first campaign as a soul knife, and can kick some decent hide if I have too. In the last session, I mangled a fighter while rolling bad. Forgot to charge up, missed some numbers on my rolls (meaning I got my attack bonuses mixed), and so forth.

I will grant, however, that my other two party members can out damage me in a heartbeat. One's a ranger with a dex of 18, and I don't want to know the rogue's stats. They have NOT taken damage yet, mostly because the ranger snipes on a regular basis and then moves. The rogue, well, his boo is just as bad as his bite. His hide is fairly nasty.

ps. the monk is in this area instead of the regular because their abilities, functioning off of chi or ki, depending on who's spelling, are more psi based than magic based, IMO.

10-24-07, 06:19 AM Well, it's basicly like you say. The soulknife can deal damage, but everyone else can deal more damage. Or, in the case of caster types, use options that are better than damage (like teleport, invisibility, save-or-die, etc).

10-24-07, 01:51 PM In the case of the soulknife, the entire class's repertoir of power is invested in a piece of equipment that anyone else can simply buy. While it saves some money, a psychic warrior can best him with a single power: call weaponry. Not only does this give the same enhancement bonuses that a mindblade can give, the psywar can imitate the mindblade's special abilities with a couple of other powers (such as weapon of energy). In addition, a soulknife is neither a decent fighting-type, nor is it a skillmonkey type. It's a hybrid, and one that can be outclassed by nearly anyone else.

In the monk's case, its abilities are spread out way too thin. It doesn't have near enough focus to actually do what it's supposed to do very well (unless you munchkin out the wazoo).
