| Shado03-10-07, 03:11 AM | So, one of my DM's is prepping his new world, and I'm going over ideas for my next character. One of my current top choices is the Psy Warrior. While thinking about the concept, I decided to look over February's Mind's Eye article, as I remember the Soulbound Weapon option being something that sounded pretty cool potentially fit my concept. But I'm confused... What exactly is a Soulbound Weapon? Can it be masterwork? Deep Crystal? A +5 Flaming Keen Great Sword? (sarcasm) I think I initially read it as, you choose a weapon type (i.e. Battle Axe), but now that I'm reading it again, that isn't the wording at all. Additionally, the idea that it is in fact a specific weapon made me do a double check, and now I'm not so sure anymore. Haven't seen much talk about this option on the boards yet, so any thoughts? |

Your 2nd level Bonus Feat is lost, and replaced by the Soulbound Weapon ability. You can manifest Call Weaponry as normal (to get a non-Soulbound Weapon, like a ranged weapon), but if you call your weapon that you took Weapon Focus for at 1st level, you gain the Soulbound benefits, as listed. If you have Complete Psionic, I would recommend taking Link Power and linking your Call Weaponry power to another low-level buff like Force Screen, as Call Weaponry's normal manifesting time is one Full Round, which means it can be disrupted and that you can't move until it shows up. Force Screen (or similar) is just a Standard Action, and you can move up with an AC buff in place until your Called weapon shows up at the start of the round automatically. You could also take a double weapon as your Soulbound Weapon, and possibly gain the enhancement bonuses and customization options on both ends for free (RAW). Probably should clear it with DM first, though... |

You don't get the class features which improve the weapon until second level, and can't actually use those class features until 4th level, but you can call your specific chosen weapon starting at 1st level. Second, your soulbound weapon can be a ranged weapon. If it's a projectile weapon (bow, crossbow, sling, etc.), then it comes with some nonmagical ammunition every time you call it. Third, your 1st level psychic warrior bonus feat doesn't have to be Weapon Focus. The variant gives you Weapon Focus in addition to the feat you get at 1st level. Shado, the soulbound weapon variant works like this; When you make your character, choose one specific weapon. This weapon must be "made of ordinary materials as appropriate for its kind" as per Call Weaponry. It can't be masterwork, and it can't have magic on it already. This weapon can be any kind of ranged or melee weapon, and can even be exotic. Note that unlike a mindblade, you are not automatically proficient with your soulbound weapon. When you take your 1st level of Psychic Warrior, you must use your first power known to learn Call Weaponry. You also gain Weapon Focus with your soulbound weapon (but not other weapons of it's type). You can use Call Weaponry to call your soulbound weapon, or to call a random weapon. When you use Call Weaponry to call your soulbound weapon, your soulbound weapon comes to your hand from another time and place. For example, your soulbound weapon could be a legendary divine spear which was destroyed by demons many centuries ago, and when you call it is transported from the past to your own time. If you're not high enough level to get a magic weapon, then the legendary spear comes from a time before it was enchanted (or perhaps from a time after the magic degraded). Starting at psychic warrior level 4, your soulbound weapon begins to improve. The soulbound weapon gets a +1 enhancement bonus to attack and damage. As you gain more levels, this enhancement bonus increases. You don't need to spend any power points for this. You can if you want, as per the augment of Call Weaponry, but it won't stack. If you do spend more power points to augment Call Weaponry whle calling your soulbound weapon, you can give your soulbound weapon some special properties. For example, if you were a 20th level psychic warrior and had chosen a greatsword as your soulbound weapon, then you could spend 10 extra power points to make it a flaming keen greatsword. Because you have 20 psywar levels, your soulbound weapon would be a +5 flaming keen greatsword. Every time you manifest Call Weaponry you can choose different abilities. Using the above example, you could have a +5 flaming keen greatsword one minute, and a +5 holy orc bane greatsword the next. No matter what level you are, or how many powerpoints you spend, the ammunition that comes with a called projectile weapon is always nonmagical. Call Weaponry Psychoportation (Teleportation) Level: Psychic warrior 1 Display: Material Manifesting Time: 1 round Range: 0 ft. Effect: One weapon; see text Duration: 1 min./level; see text (D) Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: No Power Points: 1 You call a weapon “from thin air” into your waiting hand (actually, it is a real weapon hailing from another location in space and time). You don’t have to see or know of a weapon to call it-in fact, you can’t call a specific weapon; you just specify the kind. If you call a projectile weapon, it comes with 3d6 nonmagical bolts, arrows, or sling bullets, as appropriate. The weapon is made of ordinary materials as appropriate for its kind. If you relinquish your grip on the weapon you called for 2 or more consecutive rounds, it automatically returns to wherever it originated. Weapons gained by call weaponry are distinctive due to their astral glimmer. They are considered magic weapons and thus are effective against damage reduction that requires a magic weapon to overcome. Augment: For every 4 additional power points you spend, this power improves the weapon’s enhancement bonus on attack rolls and damage rolls by 1. Soulbound Weapon You can summon a specific weapon to your hand that is bound to your very soul. Level: 1st and 2nd. Replaces: You lose your 2nd-level bonus feat. Benefit: You must choose a soulbound weapon at 1st level and you gain the Weapon Focus feat with this weapon. Also, the first power you learn must be call weaponry. You can summon your chosen soulbound weapon to your hand using call weaponry. At 2nd level, you gain the soulbound weaponclass ability, and the weapon you summon using call weaponry is of the same type as you chose at 1st level. Its physical appearance slowly changes, growing in power as you do. You must manifest the power call weaponry to obtain your soulbound weapon; you retain the weapon for the duration of the power. You may still use the call weaponry power as normal if you wish. This is a specific weapon every time you summon it, and it automatically gains a weapon enhancement at the following levels: 4th +1 weapon 8th +2 weapon 12th +3 weapon 16th +4 weapon 20th +5 weapon Also, add the following augmentation to your call weaponry power: Augmentation: When you manifest your soulbound weapon, for each additional 5 power points you spend, you may add a weapon enhancement of +1 value to the weapon. For example, if you spend an additional 10 power points, you could add two +1 weapon enhancements or a single +2 weapon enhancement. |
| Shado03-10-07, 09:36 PM | Thanks for clearing it up... Makes sense... a little disappointed I can't get a deep crystal weapon with the variant... at least not RAW. Still a nifty option. |
